Four Cats, 2050 Miles, Please Help!

Hi, I've been a member for a long time, but this is the first time I've posted here in a long while. My husband and I will be moving from Las Vegas, NV to Columbus, OH in early December and will be taking our four cats with us. We will be driving them the entire way and I wanted to see if anyone here had had any experiences with taking cats long distances. Three of them were flown out four years ago, so I have some experience with preparing them for travel, but unfortunately, that isn't an option this time.

We have three females: Buttons, 12, Ripley, 7 and Cleopatra 4 and one male, George, 6. Buttons and Ripley are bonded, as are George and Cleopatra, so they will be put two to a carrier in this fashion. The carriers are HUGE (when we originally planned to move out here, we had a 23lb cat and bought the carriers with him, as well as airline guidelines, in mind), and all four are de-clawed, so I'm not worried about them injuring each other.

Of all of them, George is the one who consistently has the most trouble in moving vehicles. Every time he spends even a small amount of time in a car, he both vomits and defecates within minutes. Does anyone here know of any methods of settling a cat's stomach? We had thought of driving him around solo each morning, giving him a chance to have his accidents, cleaning him up and then going from there. However, if there is some way to keep him from being so sick in the first place, I'd want to try that first. We also plan to limit food intake to small meals at rest stops and perhaps give catnip along the way. Water will not be a problem as I have large pet water bottles that attach to the carriers.

I plan to line the carriers with either adult bed pads or puppy pads, whichever are cheaper (I used the adult bed liners on the way out and they worked very well).

This post is to ask anyone out there who has done something like this to please share their experiences, good and bad and help us to think of anything that we haven't thought of yet.

Thank you very much in advance for any advice or criticism, so long as it's constructive, :).

I moved with my cat from Casper, WY to Columbus, OH two years ago. (By the way, welcome to Columbus!) She never had any stomach or bowel issues on the trip, but the car noises on the highway freaked her out so she had to stay in her carrier the whole time once we were out of Wyoming and around some traffic. Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you in that department. I did try to take her around in the car before we left but it didn't work. I did, however, get her used to having her leash on so I could take her out of the car without having to unstrap her whole carrier and lug it around. (For example, when toting her from the car to the hotel.) This worked out really well.

I moved 5 cats from WI to Southern Cali a couple of years ago. I used Bach's Rescue Remedy to settle them down, and I used two large wire cages/crates, with the smaller 3 in one, and the larger two in the other. I have a minivan.

Everyone made it okay :)
