chapter 25

before you get too excited, no, this isn't the end. I decided to break it down into smaller chapters, as the task of one. huge. chapter. was just too daunting. and look! as soon as i decided that, i managed to write 700 more words and tie it off a bit to bring you a chapter.

so yes. this is not the end. this is more like the beginning of the end. the end is still coming, probably at a faster rate now than it was before.

thanks to trianne for beta-reading this chapter; i couldn't really refuse after she went through the previous 24 chapters pointing out all my errors whilst on aim.
edit: after being berated by trianne for the above comment, i have to say that it is not true at all. she only pointed out my errors in 23 chapters. ...ok, 1 chapter. *heart*

some other things also updated with this chapter: the character backgrounds and a new section, character origins, which has a bit of background info on some of the less-recognisable characters ;)

meanwhile, final chapter progress: about 1000 words done; 1.5 of 8 sections done. am feeling a bit stuck. possibly because i'm subconsciously not wanting for it to end, or possibly because i'm terrified of stuffing it up. whatever it is, the last couple of paras i wrote feel painfully cliched (in their language amongst other things) which really sets my teeth on edge. so it may be a while, folks. *hides*

I think one of the things about bow that gives it such a unique feel is the way the narration follows the character 'onstage' so closely. So when it's Elijah, we're right there, seeing through Elijah's eyes but never having it explicitly explained why he's looking at whatever it is, because of course he wouldn't be thinking expository backstory for himself inside his head. It makes him very primal and present, everything we learn about him is from his actions and reactions, it's not about presenting elaborate backstory to explain the current events - rather, the backstory is given to us in slivered glimpses, the way someone who already knows the history would remember things. It's a technique that seperates bow from less polished fic, so many au-themed stories are wholly intent on providing an entire alternate past for the characters (which isn't always a bad thing, either, but often weighs action down entirely), and bow's like this perfect tip of an iceberg that hints at a lot of cold wet stuff hidden from view but doesn't need to show it all off.

The same's true for the Dom-focussed bits, where his reactions, no matter how curious, are never questioned because we're seeing the world from his perspective and from there it all makes a strange sort of sense.

The imagery in bow works not simply because it is clever and creative and evocative, but because it's utterly logical that these characters see in those terms.
