hey all you bass clarinet players out there. i just wanted to know how many of you actually get to march your bass clarinets for field shows/ parades or anything. i've been bugging my band director since last year to let me play my bass clarinet for marching season...and so far it's a no-go. =\ haha

oh yah, and i also wanted to ask if there are any bass clarinets that play in your jazz bands. this is another plight i'm on for the year, seeing as jazz band sign-ups are going on now. he says it's more difficult to find bass clarinet parts for the music they play. at least that's the reason he's given me for not letting me join in the past. i don't really know. for the bass' that are in jazz band, do you know of any issues with getting music?

In my high school, we marched bass clarinets. We've always had between 8 and 10 on the line...so you could actually hear us on the field!

And it is true, it is a little difficult to find jazz music with bass clarinet parts. I know that a lot of times for marching band, we just read tenor saxophone music, since we are both in the same key with about the same range.

Just keept trying. ^_^

*sigh* I too have asked to march my b. clar. but the director just looked at me like I was crazy. Then I asked the other director and he laughed. So yeah...
As for jazz... no deal so far... I may just have to settle to play clarinet *shudders* but I just LOVE jazz so much! *tear*

oh no.....no way I'd ever consider marching with my bass clarinet for doing drill or parades......especailly my current one (I think if I stood with it it'd be to my knees or so)....I played tenor sax in my marching band....mouthpiece is basically the same size and stuff, and that's much better designed for marching...

Ha ha, I remember getting mad at my director b/c he gave me a tenor sax reed, but they're the same size so it didn't really matter! How dumb was I in middle school... *sigh*

i also play bass clarinet, alto sax, and clarinet When i asked my band director if i could march with my beloved b.c. he just looked at me and laughed. But i have seen quite a few marching bands with bass clarinets. I am jealous. But if i tried marching with my b.c. it would go to my ankles cause i'm kinda short :)

I'll probably march bass for parade, but I wouldn't for field show. Besides, the clarinet part for next year's show sounds really really cool!

Oh, and about the jazz thing:

I wish I could, but I'd have to get really good on sax to join jazz band. And if I did get in, I'd probably be playing tenor and regular Bb, not Bass.
