"Hear that? A little, she says."
He shook his head in deep disgust. "Tell me about it."

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?
Yes. I was also furious at the same time. I felt so let down by Stroud's ending that I brooded over it for a few days and then wrote my own. My first fan-fic, but I just got another review on it today, so I thought I'd wander back into this fandom. Link is here if you want to check it out.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
It's so rare that movies based on books live up to my imagination. So my first impulse would be to say no. But it could be an LoTR. Will see what the critics say.

Hey there. My name's Maeve, I'm 14, living in the US. (I posted here before I read Ptolemy, but it seems to have been deleted, for some reason.)

Who started you on Bartimaeus?

Well, my mother, I suppose. I got the book when it first came out, but never got around to reading it. It was on my shelf for a while, but I picked it up recently and loved it.

How many people have you started on Bartimaeus?

No one yet, but I've mentioned it to people. The people I've mentioned it to had already read the books.

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY.

"Freedom is an illusion. It always comes at a price."

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?

Yes. I didn't cry because of Nathaniel's death, more because the series was over. Still, I think he ended the book beautifully, and Ptolemy was better than the first two combined.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?

Not really. Whenever they get around to making it, I suppose I'll enjoy it for what it is. But it's owned by Miramax, and they have a habit of ruining this sort of film. It won't change the books for me, but it makes me mad, because the film is going to be what most people will judge the book by, because they didn't bother reading it in the first place. So they'll have a bad impression of Bartimaeus. (Not to mention, how are they going to cinematise the footnotes?)

That's it....

Hello everyone! I'm Niia, a 17-year-old girl from Finland. I am, of course, a huge fan of the Bartimaeus-trilogy.

Who started you on Bartimaeus?

I was in the library, trying to find something new to read. The cover of The Amulet of Samarkand looked interesting (compared to all the Finnish fantasy books, which, by the way, happen to suck). So I took it home with me, started reading and... Fell in love. Unfortunately it was just published, so I had to wait a looong time until the rest two parts came out. But it was worth waiting for. Definitely.

How many people have you started on Bartimaeus?

I forced three fantasy-loving friends of mine to read the first one, but none of them liked it. They just don't understand Bartimaeus' great sense of humour...

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY.

At the moment I have the books only in Finnish (though I'm going to buy them in English as soon as possible), so you wouldn't understand a word. But my fav quote from the ones I know in English, I'd say probably...

"A dozen more questions occured to me. Not to mention twenty-two possible solutions to each one, sixteen resulting hypotheses and counter-theorems, eight abstract speculations, a quadrilateral equation, two axioms, and a limerick. That's raw intelligence for you."

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?

Yes. And had a stupid smile on my face at the same time. For the rest of the day.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?

No. You have all seen what they did to Potters, so...

Okay...I think I'm doing this right...Well anyways, Hello! I'm so glad there's a community dedicated to the great Bartimaeus Trilogy! Onward X] !

Who started you on Bartimaeus?
A favorite artist of mine on DeviantArt started posting some interesting drawings of a strange trio that consisted of an Egyptian boy, a pale-faced 'magician', and a girl with a seeming anger issue. Being the curious devil that I am, I clicked the link she offered for the first chapter of The Amulet of Samarkand. I had to admit, it caught my attention, but didn't seem like anything special at the time. Despite this, I hated feeling out of the loop, so I checked it out at my school's library. Best decision I have ever made.

How many people have you started on Bartimaeus?
...Oh, you mean currently? Er...none. Just wait a minute though-! I've been pestering my friends to pick it up, I really have! They just keep rolling their eyes at me, though... Some of them have read a couple a pages, and they admit it made them chuckle. Sadly, my friends have the attention span of a walnut, so...

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY.
Aww, man. Only one? Oh, fine you fun-sucker.
- { ""Yes, but you don't generally go around as a king-size hamster," she snapped. "You always revert to the same dark kid in a loincloth. Why? Because it means something to you. That's obvious. It's someone important from your past...""} -

Why? <strike>Because I adore Ptolemy and Bartimaeus.</strike> Don't know if I did it right...Oh, well.

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?
No...I sobbed like a baby. Hell, I was bawling by the first half of the book, when Ptolemy died. At first, when I read the ending, I was...shocked. I swear I stared at the darned page for a good 10 minutes, mouth agape and all. Then anger, yup, definitely anger. Next was absolute denial. I reread the last page about 5 times before I could get it through my skull that Nathaniel was gone. He had saved Bartimaeus's life, just like Ptolemy did. Then, something very close to closure. In a way, it was the happy ending I was looking for.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
...In a way...Kinda...Not really... Oh, alright. Yes, I'm excited. But mostly curious! Oh man, I hope they don't mess up the whole thing like they always do when they make a movie out of a book! This trilogy is absolutely remarkable and it should be represented as just that. I swear on all that is holy and merciful in this world that if they screw up Bartimaeus just one bit, I will personally write a very STRONGLY WORDED letter to the film-makers....

And maybe burn down their houses. Maybe.

Who started you on Bartimaeus?
Well, my mom checked it out at the library, and my brother was reading it. And I saw it laying on the sofa once and decided to see what it was. I read the uh...the description thingie that's on the inside of the front and back covers, and I decided to read it. It was completely different then I thought it would be going by the description (way better). This was when my brother was like half way through the first one, and I caught up with him then finished the whole trilogy while he was still on the first one : )

How many people have you started on Bartimaeus?
Not many...I guess I sort of started my brother (not the one mentioned in above answer) on it. And he ended up really liking it, too! Not as much as me (of course), but he really liked it.

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY.
Okay. Luckily, I have the whole trilogy near by, so let me just go get GE, so I can repeat the exact words...
Alright, it's a longish quote with more than one sentence, and it starts mid-sentence, it's Bartimaeus talking to an imp (starts with imp talking, then Bartimaeus, and switches off from there)..:

"...well, look what it did to Hibbet."
"He seems happy enough."
"That's Tibbet. It didn't catch Tibbet. Or me. It said it'd get us next time."
"Next time?"
"Yeah, it's been past five times so far. Each time it gives us a really boring lecture, then eats one of us. Five down, two to go. I tell you, the combination of fear and tedium takes some beating. Do you think this toenail's ingrowing?"

Haha! I laughed much at that part.

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?
Hell yeah..how did you know? I cried forever! Partly because Nathaniel died, but mostly just because it was ending, and there could be no more.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
Definitely! And yeah, I understand that it might (and probably will) be made into something stupid like Lord of the Rings and Bridge to Terebithia. But there is also always the chance that it will be something like The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe. And that's what I'm hoping for...

PICK ONE ONLY.
I don't really have a favorite... anything Bartimaeus says is pretty good, though. There's a quote in the second book, I don't have the whole quote, but it's like this: "Look at that sunset! [...] Like blood and melted cheese."

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?
I think I was in shock. I totally did not expect that. I read that last page and was like WHERE'S NATHANIEL??? I had just spent the previous six days reading all three books (I have no life, see, and I was at a vacation house with nothing to do) and not sleeping because there were spiders EVERYWHERE, and after that, every time I saw that book just lying innocently on the table I would say to myself 'what the hell?!' but I totally respect Stroud for making such a bold move. It can either make or break a story, depending on if you do it right, and he definitely did it right. It certainly made a hell of an impact on me. But to answer the question, when I think about it I get really sad, but I generally don't cry. Unless I'm listening to sad music.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
The first time I found out there was going to be a movie I was excited. But when I thought about it, and how excited I was about the Harry Potter movies and the Eragon, etc. movies, I pray to whatever god there is that they won't fuck it up. Please, moviemakers, don't destroy this fantastic series! I will cry if it's bad, seriously.

It was refreshing to see an author stand up for the integrity of the work. The validation of a sacrifice made it much more potent than the deus ex machina ending that some authors might pull because they're too attached to their characters *cough* Harry Potter *cough*. So bravo, Stroud.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
Yes, and no. Mostly no. I know it'll be much different from the books and of course even further from my personal imagination of the events in the books. So it'll be refreshing to see another way to represent the events. But I can't help but feel that such commercial movies wouldn't be able to properly capture the books, considering time limits as well as making the story more kosher to whatever the target audience is.

Personally I loved the interaction between Kitty and Bartimaeus, but the relationship between Bartimaeus and Ptolemy was fascinating too, because it added so much depth to Bartimaeus's character.

So what do you think?

I like it so much I made a com for the pairing loyaltytodeath
It has almost no content because I'm a lazy ass who forgot to, ya'know, tell people about it. But I know I can't be the only one that likes this pairing, right? R-right?

Who started you on Bartimaeus?
I found it in Barnes and Noble when I was in... 7th grade, I believe. (I'm a junior now.) I mostly picked it up because the cover was pretty. (It kind of makes me think of that quote from the first episode of Firefly - the "We can't die, Bendis. Y'know why? Because we are so very pretty." Okay, off-topic; sorry.)

How many people have you started on Bartimaeus?
A lot. I got one friend to start soon after I read the first one, and I got a lot of friends and family to read the books after I won the Bartimaeus Fantasy Writing Contest.

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY.
Ahh, only one? Okay... "Once each on five different pebbles. Not the same pebble five times. Just want to make that clear. Sometimes you human beings are so dense."

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?
No. I was sad, but didn't cry; I usually don't with books. (I think LotR is the only book I've ever actually cried because of.)

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
Not really. I mean, obviously I'll go see it, but I'm strongly opposed to making most books into movies. (Seriously, don't even get me started on what they did to things like LotR and The Count of Monte Cristo, and I'm really worried about what they'll do to The Golden Compass.)

I think I joined this community under another account about a year and a half ago, but *shrugs* since I never use that account anymore, might as well introduce myself.

Who started you on Bartimaeus? How many people have you started on Bartimaeus?
My mother, because she tends to read the same books I do. I gave AOS to my brother for his birthday last year, but he didn't seem to want to read it. Hopefully my sister will read it instead, though she's still a bit young for it.

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY.

I don't have the books handy, and I haven't read them in awhile. "Say hello to Kitty for me" is where I first burst into tears and it really hit me that he was dead. So while it's not a funny quote or anything, it's the one that really stuck with me and had the most impact on me.

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?

I held it together until the last page, in Barimaeus' POV. And then I lost it. I cried, reread it, cried again, went to bed, got up and every time I attempted to read it for the next week, I still ended up in tears.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?

I wasn't aware of plans for making a movie, but heck yeah. Though I'm also hesitant, because most movies end up disappointing me when I love the books. The first three Harry Potter movies were no exception, and I'm dreading at the same time as looking forwards to The Golden Compass for that reason.

Anyways, because I suddenly had an urge to write Nat/Kitty fic, I present to you a fic:

Title: Wrath
Author: in_excelsis_dea
Prompt: 31_days: Do you know what it means to miss you.
Characters: Kitty, Nat/Kitty, Kitty/other
Rating: G/PG
Disclaimer: Kitty and Nat aren't mine. I'm merely borrowing and intend to make no money.
AN: I haven't written Nat/Kitty in years, but I was talking about the Bartimaeus Trilogy with a couple of people last week and when I saw the prompt, this came out. And I do hope to write more of them. I forgot how fun it was.

She's still angry with him.

Let me just say how awesome it is to have actually found evidence of a fandom in existence! I think this series has such potential for a ginormous, Potter-esque fandom (not that I want that, mind you) but so very few people have even heard of it. Not that I mind so much, because having a small fandom means that the ratio of twinks to people who can spell is vastly different from HP fen. But alas, that's probably a post for another time.

Who started you on Bartimaeus? Nobody. I was at my school book fair in, like, middle school, and usually the pickings are pretty slim. So you can imagine my joy when I found a book that looked like it might not suck! I bought it, got through it in a few days, bought the next and then had to wait for the third.
How many people have you started on Bartimaeus? Currently attempting to get my friends to read them. Also convinced my seventh grade teacher to buy a copy for her classroom, which means that sixty or so students every year from now until forever (or that teacher's retirement at least) have the potential to get sucked into the fandom :D
Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY. 'Comparing masters is like comparing facial blemishes', or however the exact quote goes. I can't remember it exactly or even from which book it's from, but it is a phrase that stuck in my head out of the entire series.
Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate? Nah. I had to read the ending it bits, so the whole thing didn't really register until like, two hours after I'd finished.
Excited about the prospect of a movie? Oooooh, yes. I'd just be interested to see how they manage to do the other place and the change between planes and even just Bartimaeus himself, what with his many forms and everything!

And, please, allow me to take this opportunity to shamelessly pimp my Barty/HP RPG on GJ .

Three fanfic challenges, cross-posed on Bartiforums here.

Or just follow the cut....

Challenge the First: write a version of "Overboard" (1987) starring Jane and Nathaniel. The generalities of Stroud's world must remain intact; only Jane and Nat's social positions may change as needed to make the story work. Everything else stays! Also, Jane must (a) have something superglued to her hands, (b) look at herself in a mirror and say "you are living in a nightmare that begins at the crack of dawn," (c ) provide massive assistance to another character by volunteering random and obscure knowledge and (d) reveal her birth name. Nat must (a) tell Jane not less than five "true stories" about her life that make her (almost) cry with horror, (b) make her perform at least three ignominious chores, like cleaning a bathroom, (c ) buy her a ring of any kind, for any reason and (d) tell Jane his birth name.
The social positions of various other characters might need to be rearranged, go ahead if you think you need to do that.

Challenge the Second: write a version of "The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure" (1987) starring Jane as Princess Buttercup and Nathaniel as Wesley... and Bartimaeus' personality as Inegio Montoya. Can be as AU as you want. Restrictions: Nat's catchphrase can NOT be "as you wish." And do remember to keep the names the same- i.e. call Bart Bart, not Inegio.

Challenge the Third: write a version of "Ghost" (1990) starring... well, guess. Jane, Nat and Kitty. Jane and Nat work together in the government, as wary and ever-bickering allies. When Nathaniel is murdered, he discovers that the only person with whom he can still commune is the commoner Kitty Jones. Nat uses Kitty to communicate with Jane, and help her defeat the forces or persons directly or indirectly responsible for his death. Who killed him? Where? How? Why? How significant or insignificant is his death? That's all up in the air. Restrictions: there cannot be any romance, of any kind, between any of the three principle characters. Kitty cannot have had any prior contact with Nat. Nat must, at some point, before his death, sing "I'm Henry the Eighth, I Am" at Jane until she just about craps a pineapple (NPR New Quiz reference!) and he has to enjoy it; Kitty must then sing this same song in order to convice Jane that she is for serious.

Oh, my god... Can you picture canonnical John singing "I'm Henry the Eighth, I Am" at canonical Jane? I'm laughing to death just thinking about it!

Written as: myself
Fandom: bartimaeus trilogy
Feeling: Amused
Hearing: A Prarie Home Companion
Jonesin' For: French Fries

I am a fan of debate. I feel that the amicable argument is the highest form of communication. With that in mind, and with all due reverence to the cheeky expositor extraodinaire (Barti), here's a question that will hopefully start a few people bickering and bantering:

Who do you think is more heroical, Harry Potter or Nathaniel? Why?

Yes, it sounds like a Regent's English Comp. essay, I know. Those who have suffered through the Regents exams, please refrain from the throwing of cheesepuffs.

A side question: I looked it up in Elements of Style, and I think I understood the usage, but I'm still not exactly sure: who, or whom? I think it's who, because it's the subject- but like I said, I'm still not certain.
What!

Newbie on deck. Intro post!

Who started you on Bartimaeus?
Wow. When you say it that way... "Who started you on crystal methamphetamines?" Yup. To be honest, a friend of mine who then decided she thought it was totally unreadable. I am ashamed of her.

Who have you started on Bartimaeus?
Umm... no one? Sorry!

Favorite Quote? (pick one only)
One only? That's so unfair! Okay, okay... "Ms. Farrar coughed. 'Something wrong with your chair, Mandrake?' she inquired. "Any farther forward and you'll be in my lap.'" Poor, poor Nat. He's just hopeless.

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?
Yes and I'm proud of it.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
No. I think some books are best as books and this is one of them. But that's also how I felt about LotR, and by now I've memorized the extended edition of every film... However, it is also how I felt about Harry Potter, and the movies have almost uniformly dissapointed. So- fingers crossed, expectations lowered.

AOS Graphic Novel!

Hello, everyone - especially those of you on here I haven't met before! I'm making a post because I have some news (yes, actual news) about The Bartimaeus Trilogy.

As some of you might be aware, earlier this month Jonathan Stroud started to keep a journal on his website. It's a neat way to find out what he's been up to (he's almost finished the first draft of a new book), but there's also some Bartimaeus information.

The latest news? They're planning to bring out a graphic novel of the first book! It's early days yet, and if it does go ahead it won't be out till around 2009, but I still think it's pretty exciting. The adaptor they have in mind is Andrew Donkin, who recently made a graphic novel of Artemis Fowl.

You can read the post for yourself here: http://www.jonathanstroud.com/journal.html (it's the entry for September 28th)!

Oh, and if you'd like to see some art from the Artemis Fowl novel (so you can get an idea what the Bartimaeus one will look like), click here, and then click "see inside" in the top right-hand corner.

Have been a HUGE fan of Bartimaeus for a few years now. I've probably read the books over ten times. Love it way too much! Anything Bartimaeus related makes me hyperventilate, its my favorite fandom!
I've got nothing now, but I'm working on a batch of Bartimaeus text icons. Probably done in a week.
But I do got that questionnaire thing that everyone is doing, so here we go!

Who started you on Bartimaeus?
My cousin got the first book for me back in junior high. I'm a senior in high school now.

How many people have you started on Bartimaeus?
I've gotten at least three people to read it. Practically forced it upon them by thrusting the book into their arms.

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY.
I actually have one.lol
"Mind you, since in that split second we were, to all intents and purposes, one and the same, I rather think he knew anyway." Why? <strike>Because I'm a Bart/Nat shipper.</strike>

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate?
I did my usual hyperventilating.

Excited about the prospect of a movie?
Hyperventilated.

Hi everyone! The essencial facts: female, 22 and crazy about these books ;)

Who started you on Bartimaeus? No one... Have you seen the portuguese covers? They're pretty :D And caught my eye, and it was fantasy, so I had to read them.

How many people have you started on Bartimaeus? I'm in the process of <strike>forcing</strike> convincing my cousin to read them.

Favourite quote? PICK ONE ONLY. Impossible! And as my books aren't in english, it would be useless to post something not everyone would understand :( But it's between the footnotes and all the times Bart "analyses" Nath.

Did you cry at the end of Ptolemy's Gate? No, and I'm usually very sappy with endings. But that doesn't mean I liked it less or that it didn't touch me. It was a heartbreaking moment.

Excited about the prospect of a movie? Didn't know it would be one! O.M.G. Does anyone have any details? Cast, crew, plot...? I've searched IMDB but the information isn't public :(

And I've got a question for you all. About quotes. Know where I could find a list of them or something? I'd love to do some text icons!
