teaching english abroad
Has anyone taught English in a foreign country?

If so,
Which country/program?
How long did you stay there?
How was your experiences (the good and the bad)?
Would you recommend it?
How was re-adjusting back to your home country like?
Do you think it helped you in any way in your present or future goals/careers/etc?

We're (my bf and I) planning/contemplating/arranging doing this now. We're planning on teaching in San Jose, Costa Rica for a year. We're going down to see the country in June and we want to move there and begin work in the early fall.

Let me know if you get any good responses. I want to hear as much as I can about this before I depart.

My husband's a TEFL teacher but he's not taught abroad. He did his training programme at a college in Greenwich that was Trinity certified and has been working solidly since finishing the course. TEFL teachers aren't paid particularly well here in the UK, especially in comparison to non-native English speaking countries from what I gather.

Country:France
Program: Teaching Assistant Program (you apply through your country's embassy. There are certain restrictions like you must be under 30, have a university degree and come from certain countries).
How long: I'm still here. My contract teaching primary school kids is 9 months long. Most people work in secondary schools (much better conditions usually) and have a 7 month contract.
Recommend: Um...not sure. Depends how badly you want to live in France. If you don't speak French then I probably wouldn't recommend it. People's experiences of this program vary wildly.
Future goals: No. It was just a convienient way to come to France and work until I was married to my French partner.

- A year in Prague at a private school for adults

- I found it much harder than expected but also very rewarding. I would recommend it, but if you don't have prior teaching experience, expect it to be difficult at first

- I didn't want to come home but had to, due to illness

-Neutral effect on present career
