MATA in da 'house!

The esteemed Boston Metro gets a huge spellcheck fail.

In case you can't read it from the crappy cell phone pic, the word highlighted in yellow is "Mata", not "MBTA". The letter A isn't very close to B on the keyboard, so this is a spellcheck fail of epic proportions. Hey, I'll just run spellcheck and accept all of the changes without looking.

The tagline to the metro is: The world's largest global newspaper. I think this should be changed.

Boston Metro: You get what you pay for.
Boston Metro: We at least try really hard.
Boston Metro: We make real newspapers look good.
Boston Metro: Bringing the Lulz since 2001.

Forget fired. They should start shooting their copy editors. Shit might get DONE then.

I can only hope, if they *have* copy editors, that they don't get paid. I was copy chief of the student paper in college, and we did better than that for $6/hr.

The copy/paste errors are always a hoot. Somebody tries to trim off a few column inches and suddenly you have a dangling partic

is "Mata" a word in English?

I'm assuming it had to have either been programmed into that particular person's spellcheck "safe" list or else it is some word. There has to be a reason why it would systemically turn MBTA into Mata.

You'd think a Boston paper would've added MBTA to its spellcheck dictionary, but then again, this is the Metro we're dealing with here.

Sure. There's the weight of the mata, dark mata, family matas, all sorts of mata!

Only if followed by Hari, and then still a Sanskrit word.

It's "he/she/it kills" in Spanish, which is why I found this story particularly ironic (I blogged it as well).

It's a last name.

I have no idea why they had "Mata" in their spellcheck.

Mata isn't in the LJ spellcheck, either. Weirdly, it picks up "LJ" and "spellcheck" as wrong, but Mata is just fine. Mata Mata Mata. mata with no capital letter is bad, though.

Crime may be low on the Mata, but when it comes to crumb on the MBTA, there's more than ever!

They just "lost" their publisher and eight staffers last week. I thought this post was going to be about the Massachusetts Association of Trial Attorneys.

How do you "lose" a publisher and eight staffers? Did they leave them in their other newsroom?
