There are very few bands I've seen live 7 times. The only ones that spring to mind are in fact As Tall as Lions, Graham Colton (I think I've only seen them 5 times) a band from college called Weekend Excursion and now This Day and Age. However, This Day and Age is breaking up after Saturday night, and that event is the reason for this entry. I saw them last night and while I can't say I cried and/or bawled I did feel extremely sad. Bands breaking up for some always is a big event that leaves a dent in my soul for a little while. It happened briefly with the band Honestly, more so with the band Acceptance, a bit with the Juliana Theory and Stars in December, and South FM, but nothing has hit me nearly as hard as This Day and Age. I mean I've seen them seven times. They were a band I was absolutely crazy about. It is almost the equivalent of ATAL breaking up but not that bad.

It just seems weird to me. Trying to wrap my head around this morning and know that I won't ever see Jeff Martin at a show anymore, I won't ever hear his voice on a record, and I won't ever get to hear songs like Slideshow, Second Place Victory, The Day We Started, Sara Poor Sara, Eustace, Always Straight Ahead, Second Star To The Right, History Is Falling For Science, More of A Climb Less Of A Walk, and The Bell and the Hammer live ever again. That just tears me up, it really does. They were so incredible and while they will go on without Jeff, it's that simple fact that sucks the most. Jeff was such a cool guy. But so it goes. And onward we march. I guess I'm just glad I saw them last night. Me and the 75 other people were oh so lucky.

That's all for now. RIP This Day and Age. RIP. Thanks for the memories.

If anyone is interested in the songs they played last night at the Village Pub. They were:

percussion intro
Always Straight Ahead
The Bell and the Hammer
Second Place Victory
More Of A Climb, Less Of A Walk
The Day We Started
Second Star To The Right
All We Thought We Could
Slideshow

All We Thought We Could was pretty amazing live, and it was nice to hear the two tunes from the old disc. Onstage though things were weird. Jeff didn't really talk to the rest of the band, and it just had a funny vibe to it. Kelly even forgot the opening part to All We Thought We Could and Jeff seemed to cringe a bit. Anyways, it was rad to be a part of it.

That is all.

For those of you who might not have heard the devastating news...read this note from Jeff.

I don't know about all of you, but I seriously could not believe it. I sat here and cried for like 20 minutes. I finally gathered myself together...and then my cell phone rang && "second place victory" is my ringtone so that set me off again.

I completely understand why he has to do this, but I still wish things were different. I just can't imagine life without the anticipation of seeing them live or the arrival of a new cd.

But it's times like these I also give thanks for having this day & age brought to me, because their music has changed my life, and the band as people have given me some of the best nights and favorite memories ever.

they'll never die. they'll be alive within all of us.

well, first of all this isn't a joke; i know we write many outlandish messages, but this is a serious one...

during the past few months as i have thought about my future, it has become more and more apparent to me that my passion, my desire to create music, to be in a band has faded... i found myself not enjoying being on tour, not having written a word since we left the studio 6 months ago (these are odd things to me).

at first it was a small feeling, but it continued to grow until yesterday when i made a decision (the most difficult decision of my life) to step away from thisdayandage.

we are calling it an indefinate hiatus; which leaves some possiblities.

joey, steve, mike, and kelly will continue playing together but not as thisdayandage... they will begin on a new musical endeavor which i'm sure will blow all of our minds.

10/24 - 11/4 will be our final shows together... it would mean sooo much to me, soo much to us for everyone who has the ability to attend any of these shows to come.. especially buffalo.

this is a desicion that i wrestled with, that i had the hardest time believing at first; but i feel at peace about it.. it is a chapter in my life that is ending.. and i refuse to be a person who is involved with something that i am not 100% behind... i can't pretend; i can't do that to my bandmates; i can't do that to you, i can't do that to myself.

these past 5 years have surpassed anything i could have ever imagined.. and i can't thank you enough.

love,
jeff

I saw the boys in Syracuse at the Empty Cup. Man that place is cool. For a tiny little room it had some pretty good sound and the place was p-a-c-k-e-d!

Unfortunately they played the same set of songs I saw them play in Hartford just a few weeks ago.

The set was the following:

Always Straight Ahead
Sarah Poor Sarah
Second Place Victory
Eustace
The Bell and the Hammer
Winter Winter Spring (Not sure about that one)
Second Star To The Right

Has anyone seen them in support of the album lately? It's really an absolute pleasure to watch. From the lamps on stage, to Michael's owl amp, to the heavy percussion intro to Eustace becoming virtually an instrumental the band really has a newfound confidence, and a real sense of musicianship that I think holds its own with any touring band in the country thus far.

Anybody want to disagree!?!? Feel free to send me a shout on AIM at:
gh0421

Pictures to come soon.

Okay. So. No one here really knows me, since I haven't had net access and I had to have a friend sign me up to the community through a long-distance phone call. D: That was interesting. So, for the uninitiated, my name's Suka, and I've been tethered to my CD player for months. Oh, iTunes, you have abandoned me.

BUT.

Previously mentioned friend went to a This Day And Age show last night in Connecticut, and, living in Utah, I've been bemoaning her luck for weeks. So she slipped out before June played and tracked the bastards down. Ten minutes later my phone rang, and I got to speak with Jeffrey. :D Yes, I am a happy girl. (Yes, she gets a good Christmas present this year.)

I felt the need to share. Return to your lives, citizens!

I had the pleasure of seeing TDAA play at Flipside Fest this past Sunday.

It was quite a different set. First of all they switched stages and played at a different time slot. Both them and the Matches swapped for reasons I do not know.

They actually had the largest showing of fans I’ve ever seen for a TDAA and set (I’ve seen them 3 times now) I want to say close to 150 to 200 people were there all singing along.

They opened up with the new song that features the part “We’ll never know what’s around the bend” which had a more funky intro, that I hadn’t heard the last time I heard it. Second Place Victory was next and it was a full out rocker. Totally not a ballad. I personally didn’t like it, but it was good. Just not a powerhouse like it usually is. The Day We Started was next and that was good. They played two more new songs, lyrics I don’t remember, and then closed with History is Falling For Science, and that as always is amazing live. They seemed extremely reserved however, very shy and quiet, and Jeff didn’t even seem to rock out as much until the set's closer. Personally he seemed more focused with how the new songs came out than putting on a good show, but I could be wrong. Kelly had his hair completely cut and that was pretty wild. Didn't feel right at all. I think it’s Joe, that’s their new bassist, and he continues to show why he is the best thing to ever happen to this band. Not only was he completely hilarious, it was some of his best playing I’ve seen and I really do love his addition to the band.

Even the lead guitarist (name is escaping me) didn’t rock out as much which was a shock. They were waiting for over an hour to play though and had everything set up so maybe that’s why the lackluster set, but I don’t know, I left a bit disappointed. I know Jeff has been sick recently but still, it was all so tame. They are always worth it though but maybe I just need to get used to the new stuff, or maybe hear more old stuff.

I’d love to know what other Flipside goers thought of the performance.

I talked to Jeff about two hours after their set and told him briefly how much the new stuff rocked, because it is really good, it’s just taking me a bit to get used to it. The album is also completely finished which is way impressive. He said no song titles have been set yet and that the band finished the CD so early because they spent over 20 hours in the studio every day for 3 months. That’s like wow. My hat's off to them.

That’s all from me!
