This tutorial was requested by simply_vm. Please remember that this tutorial is meant as a guide, so not every attempt will look exactly the same. I'm also not going to give you the exact settings of my adjustment layer's, because they will NOT work on every picture. Which means you need to experiment for your own icon, which you should be doing anyway. However I'm going to explain why I chose what I chose, for this icon, so you can hopefully pick up something useful. I will NOT upload a *.psd file, so please do not ask for one.

I'm using Adobe Photoshop for this tutorial, it should translate into other programs. The only thing you may have trouble translating is the variations, I'm sure if you are handy with your program you can figure out an alternative. There's a lot of layers to this tutorial, though you might be able to do it in less, this was how I did it. If you have any questions feel free to ask, but please make sure you've read everything first. Please do not hotlink or use any of these images, they are not bases.

On to the tutorial.

1. First I start off with a screen cap from an episode (from season three) of Veronica Mars. My resources are {here.} Next I usually crop the picture before I color, on occasion I'll crop at the end. Anyway, for this icon as I normally do, I cropped the picture a couple of times until I got something I like.

2. Then I move on to the colouring, this picture is extremely dark and has a lot of brown's and red's in it. Since I plan on using some of the brown, I'm going to get rid of some the saturation (the red). For this icon I need to duplicate the image and set it to Screen, adjust the opacity to your liking. Now the image is lighter, but not too washed out, so one screen layer worked just fine for now. Obviously if your image is darker/ lighter you may need more/less screen layers.

3. The image is still a little too dark for my taste, so I want to lighten the image some more. These next couple of steps are completely optional and can probably be done to suit your program/image. I duplicate the base image once more and go to Image>Variations. I adjust the settings of the base until the image has some blue/green tones to it. After you have the image adjusted set this layer to Screen, again adjust the opacity as needed. This should even out the brown/red color that is on the base.

4. We've lost some of the red that was saturating the image, which was what we wanted. Still it's a little too dark, so duplicate the original base and set it above the variation base on Screen, lower the opacity as needed. This last screen layer, just lightens the image up without washing it out completely.

Just incase you are confused. You should now have your icon as following; original base, duplicate base on screen, variation base on screen, original duplicate base on screen.

5. The image still isn't as light as I want it to be, so now we use fill colors to adjust it further. Create a new layer, Layer>New Layer. Using a light grey,CCCCCC, setting this on Soft light, adjust the opacity as needed. As you can see the grey also washed out the red, leaving the image more yellow. This is almost the same as using a screen layer, but here you can adjust it better. If you're more comfortable with a screen layer, use that instead.

6. Create yet another new layer. This time I chose a rather dark red/brown color,351600. Set this layer on Exclusion, lowering the opacity slightly. The purpose of this layer is too give some luminosity to the image.

7. Next we need to create another new layer. This time I chose a peachy color,E4C7BA, and set this on Color burn, at a low opacity. This just darkens the image slightly, but using the peachy tone adds some natural pink to the icon.

8. Next I went on to use a curves layer, Image>Adjustments>Curves. I adjusted each of the settings, until I got something I liked. What I wanted to do with the curves layer was balance out the brightness and contrast, while also adding some more luminosity to it. After I was done adjusting the settings I set this layer on Soft light, adjust the opacity as needed.

9. I wanted the image to be a little darker. So I added another new fill layer, using a bright blue, 669CFF, and placed that on Color burn. I barely have the opacity on this layer, also adding the blue counteracts the red in the image. It doesn't make much of a drastic difference, but I like it.

10. Next create a new gradient, using the default colors black and white. Set this layer on Soft light, adjust the opacity. The function of this layer is to give the icon more contrast. You could also just use the brightness/contrast feature, if you more comfortable with that.

11. Next create another curves layer, again I'm not going to give you the exact settings I used. This time I only adjusted the Rgb, Green, and Blue channels. The purpose of this layer was to balance out the icon more and add some more contrast to it as well.

12. We're almost done, two more layers left. I commend you if you've made it this far. Last fill color. Duplicate the light grey fill color,CCCCCC, (your soft light layer) and place it above your second curves layer setting it on Color burn. Again adjust the opacity as needed. This is the final contrast we are adding to the image, while darkening it at the same time.

13. One last layer, to balance out all the colors. Create a new color balance layer. Image>Adjustments>Color Balance. For this particular layer I only adjusted the Midtones, but make sure Preserve luminosity is checked. I barely touched the settings, so the difference isn't that noticeable, this layer is just supposed to even everything out. You may or may not need this layer.

14. Now you can go on to add some text and or textures. I felt the icon was ascetically pleasing as is, so I left it alone.

Small update on the texture front. There's two new texture packages. They were made in Adobe Photoshop with the use of it's features. Though they can be used in any other editing software because they are in PNG format. There's 18 in each set.
