61 - 70 [Oct. 27th, 2009|02:17 am]

I only count movies I haven't seen before. My goal is to watch at least 50 movies from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die - List, those movies have a *
1001 movies: 43
movies in total: 70

61) Takumi-kun: Soshite harukaze ni sasayaite (2007)
I like the story and the characters but the movie progresses too fast due to its runtime. They should have made it longer

62) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) *
I didn't think I would like this movie but I did. It's so absurd but true at the same time. I think it's great how the Americans embarrass themselves *lol*

63) Akihabara@DEEP (2006)
I didn't like the movie, maybe because I loved the TV show so much. They left out a character, changed the existing ones not in a good way and it didn't feel like the @deep group at all :-(

64) Takumi-kun: Nijiiro no garasu (2009)
i liked this movie better then the first one since I got better into the charcters and we have two storyline to follow both are told in a good pace and to the viewers satisfaction.

65) Nuit et brouillard (1955)* Night and Fog [short]
I have seen many movies and documentaries about the holocaust but this short film shook me up intensively. A very good piece of work.

66) Bin-jip (2004)* 3-Iron
Intense, beautiful, puzzling, interesting and a very good movie altogether.

67) Withnail & I (1987)*
Not my kin dof movie, I found it rather boring. Though I liked Paul McGann's performance

68) Wickie und die starken Männer (2009) Vicky the Viking
When I first heard about this film I had my doubt that it would be good. I grew up watching the cartoon version of the books and after the rather disappointing projects of Hui Bui and Asterix at the Olympics I was even more sceptical that it could be a good adaptation. But I was rather curious so I did watch this movie. I was rather surprised that it was not as bad as I thought. The story is well done and I like the cast. I just think it would be better if the jokes would be more out of context and not expected. It is way funnier is a overall serious movie does jokes then a movie that doesn't take itself serious. This is something I feel could have made better. And I don't think they would have needed Lee Fu and certainly not Ramon Martinez Congaz. Over all not that bad if you like that kind of humour but definitely not a must-see. Maybe something to watch if there is nothing else on.

69) Dangerous Liaisons (1988)*
A nice move, but I like the remake "cruel intentions" better, maybe because I don't like that time period in this one?

70)
An Affair to Remember (1957)*
Somehow this 50s Lovestories cannot reach me. I liked her though.

I only count movies I haven't seen before. My goal is to watch at least 50 movies from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die - List, those movies have a *

1001 movies: 23
movies in total: 40

31) Ba wang bie ji (1993)* Farewell My Concubine
An interesting movie, though I don't know either why the concubine has to die :P

32) Céline et Julie vont en bateau (1974)* Celine and Julie Go Boating
For a French movie not so bad. But I still don't like those kind of movies.

33) Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)
Not a bad movie but it feels more like a summery to the book and I missed the important feeling of normality and the whole process of how Winston's conversion came way to short. I loved the "reasoning" that happend in the book.

34) Giant (1956)*
Good and interesting movie. Just a bit long ;)

35) Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Nice movie, good for a Saturday afternoon.

36) Drowning by Numbers (1988)*
Strange and confusing movie but interesting. Plus Bernhard Hill ♥

37) Star Trek (2009)
A good movie. Yes it does have plot-holes and there are some things that are controversy (Uhura/Spock, Spock+Emotions, exploding Vulcan&Romulus,...) But over all it's a good movie, which entertains maybe involuntarily but still it was better then I had feared and you shouldn't forget that the other Star Trek movies and Series weren't perfect either. If it introduced new people to Star trek then it has served it purpose and besides yummy eyecandy, comedy and neat special effects. Just don't expect too much, it's just a movie for entertaining after all.

38) Babes in Arms (1939)*
Nice and entertaining movie.

39) Harold and Maude (1971)*
A good movie. I had a lot of fun watching it.

40) Blackmail (1929)*
The dubbing of the polish actress wasn't as bad as I thought, but the end left me a bit unsatisfied because not much really happened. The inspector didn't have an inner struggle whether or not to turn her in and she was convinced very quickly not to turn confess.

Moives 21 - 40 [Apr. 27th, 2009|09:38 am]

[Current Location |Ottawa, Ontario]
[Rating |accomplished]

21. City of Ember
Good family adventure story

22. Flow
Documentary on water privatization around the globe. Well done.

23. Henry Poole is Here
Why is this billed as comedy? I kept waiting for it to be remotely funny and it never happened

24. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
I'm not a big Woody Allen fan. While the acting was good, I thought the movie itself was a bit over-rated.

25. Call Girl
While the story was good, I think it tried to go in too many directions. Paring down the story (and the 2 1/2 hour running time) would probably have done it more justice

26. Rocknrolla
Typical Guy Ritchie film, though nothing new to make it stand out

27. Lucky Ones
Soldiers coming home from Iraq. Certainly much better done than some that have gone before (Home of the Brave, which sucked the big one!)

28. Lakeview Terrace
Completely predictable

29. Just Buried
An attempt at dark humour that didn't quite work for me

30. Closing the Ring
Nice little drama that's probably been overlooked by many

31. Pride & Glory
An average crime drama with a great cast who pull it above mediocrity.

32. Bottle Shock
It's funny, it's based on a true story and it has Alan Rickman - what's not to love?

33. Passchendaele
Great combination of war epic and love story.

34. Secret Life of Bees
Good, solid, heartfelt drama

35. Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist
Average teenage romantic comedy with a good soundtrack

36. Good Student
Another supposed dark comedy that completely misses the mark

37. Tenth Circle
The story had potential but this made-for-TV flick just doesn't cut it

38. Zack & Miri Make a Porno
The dialogue is a little too forced to work, making it just an average, if somewhat vulgar, romantic comedy

39. Private Valentine
A Private Benjamin wannabe that fails miserably

40. Blindness
Well done and one of the best book-to-movie adaptations I've seen in a while

1001 movies: 16
movies in total: 30

21) Airplane! (1980) *
no big laughs but still funny.

22) Zéro de conduite: Jeunes diables au collège (1933)* [short] Zero for Conduct
Well done but not my kind of film

23) Sukiyaki Western Django (2007)
hilarious! I enjoyed it so much. Japanese people speaking English and the way of Japanese movie making mixed with a very American theme - the Western - is simply great.

24) Minna no ie (2001) All About Our House
I loved Koki Mitani's Uchôten hoteru and Rajio no jikan, so I expected rather much from Minna no ie but it turned out to be a rather ordinary movie hence my disappointment. It's not bad but predictable and therefore boring for me.

25) The Last Picture Show (1971) *
I felt like a person from that town: bored. Maybe you have to be American to be interested in that sort of thing.

26) Akira (1988) *
I was unimpressed. The story contains too much that you could properly explore it in a 2 hour movie. It left me rather detached and bored upon the massive display of violence.

27) The Thin Red Line (1998)*
Well done but I probably have seen too many war movies that it couldn't move me. I thought it was rather boring at times when you could anticipate what would happen next.

28) Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
Not a really interesting story. Except for Tony Head I was bored.

29) Za majikku awâ (2008) The Magic Hour
brilliant! a movie in a movie that isn't a movie but desperate plan. Koki Mitani is just great here, I love this small unimportant details that crack me up.

30) Antique (2008)
A really nice movie and against my fears just as good as the anime. The only thing that I didn't like was that black smoke or whatever that was.

Movies 1 - 20 (2009) [Feb. 23rd, 2009|10:24 am]

A seriously late start to my movie list for this year. Hopefully I will get caught up and be able to actually get them all listed this year. :)

1. The Alphabet Killers
Give this a miss. Predictable and boring.

2. Disaster Movie
Nothing resembling a plot at all and a poor send-up of disaster movies. More an exercise to see how many bad movies can be mentioned.

3. Secret of the Grain
Moving human drama, though a bit long.

4. The Wackness
Quirky coming of age film. Not bad.

5. Babylon A.D.
Mediocre action film.

6. Bangkok Dangerous
Not Nicholas Cage's worst film but certainly not his best. Just kind of average.

7. Pineapple Express
Re-enforced why I don't care for modern comedy.

8. An American Carol
Watched this only because of the presence of Leslie Neilson. It was okay, nothing more.

9. Righteous Kill
I expected more from a movie with this kind of talent in it. Disappointingly mediocre.

10. Bustin' Down the Door
Decent documentary on surfers in the mid-70s.

11. Tyler Perry's The Family that Preys
Predictable.

12. Appaloosa
The best on the list so far. Definitely worth watching. Who says the western is dead? :)

13. Mirrors
Another Hollywood remake of an Asian horror film. Saved, IMO, because Kiefer Sutherland can actually act. :)

14. Save Me
Slow, predictable and not at all well done.

15. The New Protocol
Drama/thriller, decent action and story.

16. Max Payne
Not bad for an action film based on a video game.

17. Tribute: Stanley Tookie Williams
Pretty much just 66 minutes of various people eulogising the deceased. Not worth a rental fee to watch, so thankful I saw it for free.

18. Igor
It was fun, 'nuff said.

19. Repo! The Genetic Opera
Uh, it stars, among others, Paris Hilton. Since she can't act, take it from there. :)

20. Children of Huang Shi
Wonderful true story, great acting. Add this to your list of movies to see!

I only count movies I haven't seen before. My goal is to watch at least 50 movies from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die - List, those movies have a *

1001 movies: 11
movies in total: 20

11) Captain Blood (1935) *
I liked it.

12) Chun gwong cha sit (1997) * Happy Together
It's sad but good.

13) Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (2009)
I liked it, it's Futurama after all, but the show did have some episodes that were better. It's as good as the other movies.

14) Heat (1995)*
Good movie, though it didn't really touch me.

15) Some Like It Hot (1959)*
"I'm a man!" "Well, nobody's perfect." *g* This movie is so much fun!

16) Apocalypse Now (1979) *
Wow. well done and so insane. One should watch it.

17) Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) *
Very interesting

18) The Big Red One (1980) *
A good movie, I really liked it though it's actually nasty as war is.

19) Gaslight (1944)*
Scary. That poor woman! I like the movie, but the end was a bit too fast.

20) Lolita (1962)*
I expected much more from the movie. Like this it was rather boring.

1-10 [Feb. 2nd, 2009|10:41 pm]

I only count movies I haven't seen before. My goal is to watch at least 50 movies from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die - List, those movies have a *

1001 movies: 2
movies in total: 10

1) Taiikukan Baby (2008) Gymnasium Baby
I have seen better. You hadn't had time enough to get into the couple and it has too many depressing elements.

2) Tsotsi (2005)*
good movie but kinda predictable. It's always the same story - and it's not a happy one :-/

3) Das Rad (2003) [short] Rocks
cool, I love it.

4) Shame No More (1999) [short]
The only fascination is that it "backwards" but for me that's not really interesting so I didn't like this movie much. But it's a nice idea to do it like this.

5) Hana yori dango: Fainaru (2008) Boys Over Flowers: Final
It's a good ending for the show. it stays true to it and the characters, though I thought that there wasn't enough development on Makino's account- but then again that's also a flaw in the show.

6) Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1926) The Adventures of Prince Achmed
awww I really loved it. I like those silhouettes and and the story was interesting (Achmed accidentally finds his brother in law *lol*) and a lot of cute things (i.e. the witch pickpockets the lamp *g*). Great movie and I was impressed I must say, must have been quite a lot of work.

7) The Reader (2008)
not bad, but the book is better (long review here)

8) Valkyrie (2008)
Better then was feared but still a few facts were wrong and they made Stauffenberg too much of a hero.

9) Dead Like Me: Life After Death (2009)
Not bad (after all it's Dead Like Me) but the show was better. I missed Rube and the "real" Daisy a great deal.

10) Halloween (1978) *
A somewhat pointless movie
