1.Pillars of the Earth

I bought this book because I saw it featured on Oprah's Book Club. Despite the fact that the book is 1082 pages long I completed it in 3 days. Believe me it's a real page turner. Who would have thought that a novel set in the twelfth century focusing on a monk and the building of a cathedral would have been so interesting. Ken Follett has a great talent for story telling and description. I was drawn to the 'good' characters and just hated the villain. The novel is so interesting that I hated when the story came to an end.

I read this book earlier this year and I totally agree with you. I could not put it down once I started! I have the sequel, A World Without End, from the library to read and I can't wait to start that one too. I'm not religious at all, but something about the story just kept me involved for every single page.

Yeah, I just bought World Without End myself- the most money I've spent on a book. I'm going to start it tonight. Looking forward!

I read it back in 95, while I was hospitalized.
Excellent book.

However, I suggest not reading a bunch of Ken Follett books in a row.
He has stock characters, and once you can identify them, it kind of spoils the storytelling.

I read Whiteout before I read Pillars and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for a good thriller/drama. Then I read Pillars and I was thrown for a loop because it was so different! I just started World Without End last night and so far, I'm impressed with how much has happened. But thanks for the advice...I'll read a few books in between the rest of the "smaller" books he's written.
