I've decided to start where I'm at with book reviews, and then work in the one's I've fallen behind on in later.

The Subtle Knife
by Philip Pullman
308 pages

Rating: A
Recommend: Yes
Book Number: 37 / 52

Summary from back of book:

The intrepid young Lyra has passed through the shimmering portal in the sky and finds herself in a beautiful, haunted otherworld - Cittagazze, where soul-eating Specters stalk the streets ans wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. But she is not without allies: twelve-year-old Will Parr, fleeing for his life after taking another's, has also stumbled into this strange new realm.

On a perilous journey from world to world, Lyra and Will uncover a deadly secret: an object of extraordinary and devastating power. With every step, they move closer to an even greater threat - and the shattering truth of their own destiny.

I liked this one better than the first. The dynamic of Will and Lyra makes it very enjoyable. I'm enjoying the series very much for something I thought I'd hate.

The Road to Civil War
Marvel Comics
160 pages

Rating: A+
Recommend: Yes
Book Number: 38 / 52

Summary from back of book:

Who's side...
...are you on?

The clouds are quickly building on the horizon for a storm that will split the Marvel Universe down the middle, and the line is drawn here!

Ripped from the pages of
New Avengers comes the explosive hidden story of the Marvel Universe's secret past, the secret history of Marvel's most secret team - how they came together, and how they are ripped apart - setting the state for Civil War.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man's got a new lease on life, new powers and new costume with some very special features - courtesy of his new best friend, Tony Stark. So what could possibly go wrong? Lots, True Believer. The Bonds that Spider-Man now forges may very well determine his capacity to withstand the coming storm.

And finally, a mysterious object has fallen from the heavens to crash in the Midwest, and Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four has been called in to try to piece together the puzzle surrounding it. What is it, and how will it lead into
Civil War and the return of a Marvel Mainstay?

Collecting the
New Avengers: Illuminati one-shot, Amazing Spider-Man #529-531 and Fantastic Four #536-537, written by Brian Michael Bendis and J. Michael Straczunski; and illustrated by Alex Maleev, Ron Garney, Mike McKone and Tyler Kirkham.

I really enjoyed this, and look forward to the rest of the story. I've been meaning to start on this for a while, but hadn't gotten to it - until I saw Iron Man last night, and was moved to start now! I bought the trade paperback, because I don't have the means to buy comics individually.

I actually didn't think The Subtle Knife was as interesting and as exciting as The Golden Compass. I haven't read The Amber Spyglass. I am trying to wait a while before jumping into that one.
