Book 28 & 29 of 2008
#28: Kathy Reichs, Break No Bones, Crime Fiction, Paperback, 445 pages, 2006, Pocket Star Books, New York, 7/10.
The ninth book in the Dr. Temperance Brennan series (inspiration for the TV show Bones), finds her in South Carolina, heading a field study course in anthropology. Unfortunately, they find not only ancient bone, but a more recent corpse. On top of that, the local forensic anthropologist is out of town, so Tempe gives in to a friend’s request for assistance. Suddenly, there are a more than a few corpses with the same strange bone markings. Add to that both her estranged husband and her boyfriend showing up, attacks in the middle of the night, and conspiracies that center around an evangelical outreach clinic, and Brennan has more than enough to keep her busy. I enjoyed this story; never a dull moment.
#29: Kathy Reichs, Bones to Ashes, Crime Fiction, Paperback, 388 pages, 2007, Pocket Star Books, New York, 7/10.
Tempe is back in Montreal, but thinking of a childhood friend who went missing so long ago. It doesn’t help that she’s working a case involving several missing girls. Her remembrances color her investigation when it turns out the friend’s little sister married a prime suspect in the case. As usual, everything is convoluted, and nothing exactly as it seems. Kathy Reichs tends to make it hard to stop at chapter endings, giving a glimpse that a new twist is to come as the closing sentence.
