I've written up a con report here. Since the link goes directly to the entry, you get the whole shebang instead of the liberally cut-tagged version you'd see if you were browsing my journal. You Have Been Warned.

(It's on Dreamwidth rather than on LiveJournal. If you want to comment, you can do so by using your LiveJournal ID as an OpenID. There's more information on how to do that here.)

I refreshed the page of audio recordings of panels, and got a "You don't have permission to access /4thSt2009/ on this server" error; I went back a page to the LJ community entry they were linked from, and it had been deleted. Does anyone know if there are still audio recordings available, or if there will be again later?

Recommendations for our new friend [Jun. 25th, 2009|04:56 am]

[mood | entertained]

On Friday night we had an interloper from the coaches' convention, Don, visit our smoking party, regale us with tales of Scientologists, and ply us with bad drink and good desert. Many who were there posited that he was, in fact, a geek-in-potentia; if they are right, I would love to encourage it, and he did give me his business card.

Can I get some recommendations for light but worthwhile introductory F&SF, to pass on to him? I can think of some, but I'm far less well-read than y'all seem to be.

an attempt at a thank-you by a fried (but happy) con-chair [Jun. 24th, 2009|10:41 pm]

Hey, everybody. I'm still wrapping up the last of the convention work, but wanted to poke my head in to say hello. Jenett and I had a meeting at the hotel today which went very well (and THANK YOU all for taking good care of the hotel and not breaking it or the staff) and we'll have the final numbers tomorrow. I need to email registration for a few final numbers, but we should have everything finished soon...

... and ready to hand over to the Triumvirate Trio Unholy Trinity so they can start planning next year's Fourth Street, which I plan to attend and enjoy wholeheartedly.

In the meantime, THANK YOU ALL for everything you did for the convention. You made it an amazing and wonderful weekend, and so many of you helped in ways big and small. One of the things on my convention wrap-up to-do list is "write thank-you notes," but I wanted to take a moment to get a general one in here, and to wave at everybody -- especially the folks I hardly had a chance to talk with at the convention. So many excellent new people among the old friends! I hope we can hang out in the future.

OK, back I go to do a bit more work. Catch you all soon.

Notes from 4th Street [Jun. 22nd, 2009|08:29 pm]

Disclaimer: I don’t write as fast as people talk, and I’m better at catching key ideas and messages than at catching verbatim quotes and all the proper attributions. I’ll supply these where I can, and please add the info where you have it.

How to sound smart on panels

• As a moderator ask, ‘What do you wish people would ask you? Or ‘what do people tend to get wrong?’
• Refrain from sounding dumb.
• Come with questions, anecdotes and/or images
• Be willing to let other people look smart
• Ask questions of those who are more knowledgeable on a subject.
• (SKZB) Slam something – it’s easier than praising it. That requires actually knowing more about the subject at hand. (And putting something else down is certainly the method of self-aggrandizement preferred by grade-school children. (Editorial comment my own))
• Don’t say, ‘In my book…’
• Do say, ‘That’s interesting, what led you to that conclusion?’
• Well-placed self-deprecation. (I’m just a talented amateur.)
• Use a polite negative in responding to off-track questions. i.e.: ‘That’s an interesting reading.’
• Read Mark Twain and fanzine descriptions of bad panels
• Fact check

Changes in Fantasy Fiction over the past twenty years
(People speaking on and to the panel seemed in general to have trouble grasping how recent a time frame that is, and used examples going back to the 60’s and 70’s)

• Death of the mass market paperback
• Influence of tv, internet and online role-playing games in the pacing of stories; things move more quickly, the audience gets bored more easily
• Better exposition, not so much with betterment of the dialog
• More meta-commentary on earlier work, more self-referential material
• Since 9/11/2001 tendency to prefer ‘cozy’ rather than ‘edgy urban fantasy
• Resurgence in historical works (Jane Austen)
• Horror more explicit
• Dark fantasy seems to have taken the niche of earlier ‘eerie’ horror works
• Readers are more articulate about what they want
• A big sea-change in authors talking to each other much more, online

Random: ‘We gravitate towards certain kinds of disgusting greasy, salty snacks and disgusting, greasy, salty books.’

Books mentioned:
Twilight
Hunger Games
Hambly’s ‘Those who hunt the Night’

Preliminary Con Report [Jun. 22nd, 2009|05:34 pm]

skylarker
I made it back from the 4th Street Fantasy convention at about 1:30 AM last night – all mentally and musically inspired. I took a ton of notes at the panels and plan to spend some time going over them this week. At the very least I’ll be able to post a list of recommended books, both fiction and factual reference books.

The ‘Stuff of Fantasy’ panel in particular gave me a lot to think about for the world-building phase of my future projects. The implications of the 'stuff' characters use in their daily lives ranges from trade empires to technological developments and inter-cultural influence... I’ll especially want to look at the books referenced on this panel.

The panel took a different direction than I'd anticipated, but it was all fascinating so I didn't object. I had expected more talk about how people in different cultures at different levels of technology spent their time, given the limitations and usefulness of the stuff they had to work with - maybe that could be a focus of a similar panel next year?

I met a lot of wonderful, fascinating people, had interesting conversations, participated in the play reading, and sang and played in the music circles. (It’s always a treat for me to get to sing and play with the more accomplished musicians who show up at the convention, and I'm very grateful to those who sang and played along with me :)

My only major mishap was that I took a fall in the hotel restaurant – there was a step that I didn’t know was there. I landed on my left knee hard enough to worry me, but fortunately my roommate was a physician and she was nearby, as well as the trained emergency tech who was also at hand. They made sure I was okay and helped me to my feet. (Thank You! again) I was pretty shaken up, but my knee was not impaired (just bruised, and not as badly as I feared, since I was able to slow my fall a little by grabbing onto a chair.) I did lose my plate of food, but gave people a little laugh by saying that it was the most creative way I’d ever lost my supper.

literary terminology [Jun. 22nd, 2009|09:26 am]

kitgordon
Elise asked about useful sources for literary terms that folks in the SFF world could steal. I had to come to work for the details, but the best book I've used (throughout grad school, and I still keep a copy handy) is A Handbook to Literature by William Harmon and C. Hugh Holman. It's been in print since 1936; I have the seventh edition (1996), but no doubt it's been revised since then.

I misspoke at the end of the panel today. I do not owe PNH a Captain Jack Sparrow / Captain Jack Harkness crossover slashfic.

I owe him a Torchwood/Deadwood crossover slashfic.

Thank you.

this and that [Jun. 19th, 2009|08:17 pm]

Don't be shy about posting links to photos, con reports, etc. here and/or in the Fourth Street Wiki. Or post reports and photos themselves in either location.

I've added a link to photos tagged "fourthstreetfantasy" on Flickr to the sidebar of the Fourth Street website.

Anyone have any questions thus far? Neat things you've discovered? Overhear anything good?

There have been some posts to twitter, you can search on 4thSt to see remarks on twitter and/or check out the 4th Street twibe. Folks are mentioning @4thSt or else using the hashtag #4thSt on their posts about the con. When there's room.

The consuite is on second floor in rooms 226 & 227 (they face the hallway that overlooks the pool). Members are welcome to hang out there or stop in to grab food/drink (which is included in your membership).

A music party will start around 10pm in the programming space; music may very well happen in the smoking consuite (room 219) as well though I'm guessing that might start later given there's a program item of sorts going on there that starts at 9pm.

Were there any announcements at opening ceremonies that should be repeated here? (I'm guessing someone knows the room number for the smoking room. I believe it's on the second floor above the front desk area. Smoking consuite is room 219.)

(If anyone wants updates on the Twins game, I'm following it via Gameday on my laptop and/or At Bat on my iPod Touch.)

Oh, my, that was fun! Jo Walton read Lysander excellently well.

I forgot to write down who was what; anybody remember all of it? Tom Whitmore was Puck in (I think) Act IV; Jean Mornard was Oberon through at least Acts I-III. And Peggy O'Neill was Theseus. Lydy Nickerson read Nick Bottom in Act IV and I was Bottom in Act V. Oh, and M'ris was reading Thisby, which means she was... which mechanical does Thisby, again?

And who read Moon and the corresponding mechanical? I just remember giggling like mad, not who read it.

Hotel wireless FYI [Jun. 18th, 2009|10:25 pm]

brooksmoses
The signs in the rooms say "there is no wireless in the rooms".

In practice, radio waves have poor literacy skills, and so the signs are not precluding my getting a "good" signal, up here in my 4th floor room, from the function-room net service. No idea how high it goes (does the wireless go to 11?), but worth a try, I suspect.

Useful Info [Jun. 18th, 2009|11:48 am]

laurel
[This was recently posted to the Fourth Street Fantasy Convention website and is being cross-posted automatically to this community. You can comment here or there.]

Getting There

Magenta Griffith’s excellent instructions on how to get to the hotel are available on the website; folks may also comment with more info on that post or here on livejournal.

The Lay of the Land

Registration will probably be at a table in the hallway outside of the Courtyard rooms on the first floor. Programming will take place on the first floor in Courtyard rooms 1-4 (which will be merged into one big room); the dealers’ room will be in Courtyard rooms 5 & 6 also on the first floor. The consuite will be in two adjoining suites on the second floor (rooms 226 & 227) which are above the Courtyard rooms; the smoking consuite will be in a room elsewhere on the second floor, and the brunch will be held in the Terrace Room on the second floor.

Confused yet? Have a look at a map of the first floor and a map of the second floor.

Registration

Registration will probably be located on the first floor at a table in the space outside of the Courtyard rooms (where programming & dealers’ room are); if it’s not there, there should be a sign telling you where it is.

Beth Friedman, our head of registration says:

Registration will open around 2 pm on Friday and 9 am on Saturday. Length of hours will depend on amount of business — I reserve the right to close up shop and leave a sign that says “to register, find me in programming or grab me after the panel is over” if things are slow.

Yes, we’re aware that the consuite and dealers’ room are opening at Noon on Friday so will be open before registration is open. Dealers can pick up their badges from Daniel “Stitch” Mohr in the Dealers’ Room. Folks will be able to pick up their badges on Thursday night at the work party/playreading, though we can’t guarantee all the other registration materials will be available then.

If you don’t have a badge or haven’t yet purchased a membership and show up on Friday before Beth gets there to open registration, you’re welcome to check out the Dealers’ Room (once it’s open) or help the folks in the consuite with setting things up (anytime after 10am or so).

Programming

The programming schedule is online and now includes program item descriptions.

Most programming will take place in Courtyard rooms 1-4. The Brunch will be in the Terrace room on the second floor.

  • Friday: 3pm ’til 10pm or later with a dinner break from 6pm ’til 7:30pm.
  • Saturday: 10am ’til 8:30pm with a lunch break from 12:15pm ’til 1:30pm and a dinner break from 6pm ’til 7:30pm.
  • Sunday: 10am ’til 5pm. The Brunch, which is included in your membership, will take place between 11am and 1pm in the Terrace Room.

Dealers’ Room

The Dealers’ Room will be located in Courtyard rooms 5 & 6 on the first floor next to the programming room.

Hours:

  • Friday: 12:00pm - 6:00pm
  • Saturday: 10:00am - 7:00pm
  • Sunday: 10:00am - 6:00pm

A consignment service for book sales is available on a first come, first served basis– check out the Dealers’ Room page for more info.

A Fan’s Gotta Eat

A restaurant guide is now available on the website. Thanks to Kit Gordon for putting this together!

The Sunday Brunch is included in your membership and will run from 11am ’til 1pm on Sunday; the brunch will be located in the Terrace room on the second floor.

Stay Connected

We’ve contracted with the hotel to have wireless internet access for our members in the programming and dealers’ rooms (Courtyard rooms 1-6) from Friday morning ’til 9pm Sunday.

There’s free wireless internet access available at the hotel. Hotel wrangler Jenett says:

The hotel provides free wireless to everyone in the public spaces: the front lobby, a large atrium (including the pool area) outside where programming will be. I’ve gotten access in the hotel restaurant and bar, but I don’t know how far inside that space it goes. I’ve picked it up several times: it seems to be slightly slow, but quite functional. It does not include the consuite. (We figured people that desperate for ‘Net can walk out into the atrium area…)

Weather & Traffic

Fourth Street Elsewhere Online

Members (and folks who wish they were at the con) will surely be posting about the convention in the Fourth Street Livejournal Community. Fourth Street also has an event page on Facebook. I (your humble webmaster Laurel Krahn) may tweet about the convention as @4thSt; if you have useful info or interesting observations you’d like me to post to our twitter account, just let me know. I may retweet some things other congoers are saying, as well. If you post pictures of the con or con-related activities to Flickr, please tag them “fourth street fantasy” so they’re easy for us to find.

We have a Wiki and encourage you to post info and pictures to it. We’ve had some problems with spammers of late and also had some technical difficulties so had to restart the whole thing (seemed reasonable since there was so little content). If you created an account previously, you’ll need to create a new one. At the moment, Laurel Krahn and Kevin G. Austin are the wiki administrators– if you’re good with Wikis and want to join that team, let us know.
