Time flies [May. 8th, 2008|10:09 pm]

Time flies. It's suddenly May. Where the heck did the months pass?? Certainly they didn't come my way, at least not in the sense of leaving time here for me!

This week I had a hectic day at work on Monday, then spent Tuesday and Wednesday at a local security conference. It was ok, some lectures were pretty interesting, others were either plain out dull or just on the side of what I expected or was interested in hearing. Unfortunately some of the speakers only presented their own solutions - or worse, spoke about their own organization, but without being allowed to reveal any details from them.

Today I caught up on some projects, and tomorrow I plan to dedicate myself to only one project for a change. We'll see how it goes, though.

The house is still under work. It will probably take some time, but I am confident our builder knows what he is doing and will do it well. I just hope we're lucky with the weather for the next days, too, it's neither fun nor good for the house to work in heavy rain and wind, and this is on the most weather prone side of the house, too.

I need new glasses. If any locals would like to come with me to the optician, I'd be very grateful. I hate picking new frames on my own, and if the staff are busy it's not fun to ask them either, even if it's their job. My old frames are falling apart (I may get someone to sold them for me, but I still need some new ones), and I am not sure the lenses are right for me anymore either, so I'd like some new ones. Style yet unknown. I thought about going for a two-for-one offer at Specsavers, but I should have extra thin lenses, so it would be very expensive as I have to choose the same for both frames. And I didn't find any nice frames among the cheaper ones that could justify getting two pairs of heavy glasses and then get another light one later if I felt I needed it. Now I am using an old pair, and even though they are a lot better than my contact lenses (I can't work by the monitor with them) they are not perfect. At least they are very light with thin glasses....

Lots of new flowers are sprouting in the garden. Different daffodils are in full flower now, as are yellow and red tulips. The scillas are about to end the blooming now, but some perennials I bought last year are flowering or sprouting now. And we have LOTS of yellow and white primulas (two different kinds), as well as a few violet ones of a third kind. I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow when it's still light outside.

magic lady, you're the one i know [May. 8th, 2008|03:51 pm]

[music |magic lady - astrobal]

so close to summer and to being done with high school forever gajkdgjdkalsfjiow;afjdak;. so. close.

when i finish this huge fucking paper (my second-to-last piece of shit to do really at all before three weeks of pseudo-school), i am smoking a big. fat. headie. blunt.

in other news, my 18th birthday is on monday, wahoo! i think that it will actually coincide directly with aforementioned blunt so that will be nice.

for those of you who don't know, my post high-school plans involve going to south america next year, then working and shit and eventually finding myself in toronto for four years.

this disco song i found in my music library is sick, by the way. so is ragtime by e.l. doctorow, but you might already know that. i'm reading it for the first time...

that is all, time to stop procrastinating... really.

Life is tricky [May. 7th, 2008|07:36 pm]

[Tags|]

Needless to say, life has been very tricky lately. There is no sense or purpose I can find in anything happening recently. It’s easily been the most difficult time of my life. Many things have been falling to pieces around me. Loosing our marriage, loosing the house, loosing the Malvern sweat lodge and so many of my friend’s lives within unforeseeable problems. I really wish I could make this time better in some way. Like tuning the universal radio knob for better reception.

What I can say is that if it wasn’t for understanding, kind people, I probably wouldn’t be writing this right now. I thank my friends, my Mother, my Boss, and my cats for being there for me. And especially Ian, who was brave enough to call the police the other night to make sure a crisis didn’t happen.

My neighbor, who moved here recently from Ohio with is wife, has also been a rock in supporting me through this. He did what my Father, or my Grandfather, would have done in this situation. He put me to work helping him build a chain-link fence around his backyard for his dog. And also fed me dinner after work :d Yum.

Support comes from the most unlikely of places sometimes. I am thankful for that.

I also learned a new word recently from my neighbor. Persnickety. I suppose growing up in North Philly has shielded me from such creative uses of the English language. I’m sure I have more melting-pot soul in my language than most folk. This just adds to the pot in a great way.

I miss Elizabeth greatly at this point. I truly wish I could make it all better instantly. I am willing to do the work to make it right again. I have always been and always will be.

I find it amusing that life has recently been a lot like Savage Steve Holland’s “Better Off Dead” staring John Cusack. Where the songs playing around me have been, well, deep and dramatic in an 80s sort of way. Recently I have heard the following being played, at random, in the different usual places:

Styx: Babe
Mr. Mister: Broken Wings
Michael McDonald and Patti Labelle: Own My Own

Normally, if there is such a thing, such random places would be playing annoying pop music. Like I said before, I need to find that knob to adjust the station of the universe.

Examination Over Retardation [May. 7th, 2008|02:45 pm]

beer_retard
While my Seattle Beer Examiner blog is starting to hit its stride, this one is suffering. I've had a lot of stuff going on and plenty more is coming. On the way home last night, I was excited to find that we now have Racer 5 in six packs in Seattle. It took awhile (supposedly because Bear Republic has lousy distribution up here), but now I can walk three blocks down the hill to a grocery store and get a six whenever I want. I also tried what is reputed to be the most bitter Belgian beer around, the De Ranke XX Bitter (on tap at the Stumbling Monk right now). It lived up to its billing. I think I need another glass or two to know how I really feel about it, so I won't say much for now other than it finishes dry and bitter and the bitterness stays with you for awhile.

Some other stuff I've been doing includes: brewing my first batch of homebrew, trying a pretty good chili beer at the Pike and getting geared up for Brouwer's Sour Ale Festival this weekend.

I will be in Washington, D.C. this weekend! Hooray! I'll be free Saturday, but I probably won't get there until late Friday and will be leaving early Sunday. [info]martinivixen and I will be staying at the casa de [info]fizzbang and [info]drspooky. So, tell me you want to hang or you get no love.

On a complete aside, does anyone watch The Riches other than me? Cause it's a good show.

Appointed to the Americas Ubuntu Regional Membership Board! [May. 6th, 2008|08:29 pm]

princessleia2

A few months back I was asked if I wanted to be considered for the Ubuntu Regional Membership Board for the Americas. It’s one of three Membership Boards in the world whose task is to handle applications for people who apply for Ubuntu Membership.

Well, this weekend I learned that I was appointed along with 8 others the board. I know most of my fellow board members pretty well and it’s a fantastic group of folks, if I do say so myself :)

Hooray!

Michael Pollan: Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants [May. 6th, 2008|09:43 am]

Michael Pollan is a great speaker on the infancy of food science. Most messages are positive reinforcement for the basics (pasturized eggs, grass fed beef, eat until your 80% full, eat with friends, and never eat where you get your car fuel) but there are some funny anecdotes: Eat junk food, all that you want - if you are willing to make it from scratch yourself. Food Science as the new Cold War where for every evil empire, there must be a good - which drives the food business.

The last week has been very busy and I haven't had time to write much in my blog. Neither have I had time to read any blogs, so if something has happened that I should know, please tell me. Tomorrow it's a conference in Trondheim, the same on Wednesday, and I have some vague ambitions about getting to the gym before or after the event - although it would be lovely to get some extra rest this night, too.

We have visitors now, the first couchsurfers are sleeping in our guest room. Yay!

Home again! [May. 4th, 2008|11:24 pm]

We came home a couple of hours ago. I beat the GPS on the last leg, arriving 25 minutes before the original arrival estimate. Let's say I didn't drive 10% below the speed limit ;-)

On the way back we stopped at the new Opera house in Oslo. It opened a couple of weeks ago, and at least the building is already a pretty big attraction. The surroundings are sad and grey, they are still constructing new houses around it, but the building itself is build in white marble and beautiful. The roof is open to the public, and today it was almost crowded. I don't know how many people who were there, but it was a steady stream and the bridge to the main station (basically the only way to walk there) was crowded. Amazingly it wasn't crowded in garbage, litter or pee either!

Loving Web 2.0 [May. 3rd, 2008|09:33 pm]

[mood | pleased]

I think, if I wanted to combine my LJ persona and Facebook persona, I could do so, such that I could control all of my social media (except MySpace, which isn't real) from one place. I like that. (GoodReads and Twitter are already there. Sort of; the Twitter app is acting up.) When I get my more-professional blog set up, I'll do that. It won't be on LJ. I might feed it to a new LJ account, though.

About Twitter: I'm [myfirstname][mylastname] (with no punctuation) there, if anybody wants to add me. Obviously, the first name in question is the one I go by, not the one my parents gave me--so perhaps I should have called it "mymiddlename". Also, I feel I should point out that, despite my behavior on LJ, I'm not all that wordy there. I wouldn't expect to see five updates from me in any given day, and it could be far less.

I haven't found the "ship to LJ" button yet.

Anyway, this "Web 2.0" thing is good. Now bring me my semantic web. ;)
