Challenge #3: First Lines
Below are three "first lines" to choose from. Take one, set your timer, and write. Don't stop to think; your finished story doesn't have to make sense, or even have a plot. The point of the exercise is to write as much, as quickly as you can, sparked only by a short, nondescript first line. How much can you write in thirty minutes?
You'll find that line 1 is first person, line 2 is second person, and line 3 is third person. For additional challenge, pick the one you aren't accustomed to writing (for most people, this would be second person, though first person is often a challenge as well.)
1. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
2. You back away, clutching the prize in your left hand.
3. She paused, looking back with longing clearly written on her face.
Have fun!
