Happy Valentines Day!
Zack tossed and turned on the inn bed, ripping the sheets off him and placed them onto the floor. It was strange to be alone for the first time. He glanced at the clock by the bed. It was already 2:00 am and he had yet to sleep, needing to be up at 5:00 in the morning.
“Damn, this sucks,” he mumbled placing his arms behind his head and stared up at the ceiling. Thoughts clouded in doubt about his mission. He found his mind slowly drifting on Angeal, wondering what he was doing right now. They had always been a team, since the day Angeal had took him under his wing, wondering if that was why he couldn’t’ sleep. This was his first real mission alone. What if he messed up? He was being ranked on this.
No… He shook the thought out of his mind, staring at his cellphone. He would be fine. He was tough. Angeal had taught him well and he needed to prove it. Not only to Shinra and himself, but to Angeal as well. He needed to show his mentor that the puppy could obey strayed away from the pack- but…, he felt his nerves getting to him again. Why couldn’t he shake this feeling off? What the hell was wrong with him...
“Man,” Zack rolled over on his side looking at his cellphone, dieing for some company right now. Being drowned in silence and his worry was simply maddening to the boy, being usually so confident and such a chatterbox. “I need someone to talk to,” he grabbed his cellphone, flipping it open.
“Angeal…”
The second class figured why not call him, he was missing him. He was sure Angeal was already asleep but he knew his mentor wouldn’t mind to be woken up- and if he did, he would put on a cute act. It worked everytime.
He dialed Angeal’s number and placed the phone up against his ear, it took a few rings before a very sleepy sounding Angeal answered. “Hello?” Yes Angeal was sleeping, his voice was horse, Zack heard him even yawn.
”Hey,” Zack grinned, crossing his legs as he stretched out more on the bed, a foot wiggling side to side. “I’m bored and can’t sleep.”
A pause of silence.
“…Do you have any idea what time it is Zack?”
Zack was quick to answer, eyes shifting to the clock by the bed. “Yeah. Hey, guess what.” Zack didn’t give Angeal time to speak, blabbing about the events that had happen today. “I was talking to the man at the inn, he called me SIR,” there was a light laugh. “No one’s ever called me sir before. Was kinda cool.”
Angeal lidded his eyes. Sleep was good right now. God he wanted to go back to sleep, knowing once Zack started talking there was no shutting the teenager up. “Zack, I’m hanging up now.”
“No, wait! Uh…hey, listen Angeal.” Zack bit the bottom of his lip, nibbling on it for a moment, just going to say it. Shyness was not an emotion Zack Fair felt often. “This may sound really corny, but I’m missing you.” The blunt truth, he wondered suddenly what Angeal was going to say to that.
Another pause of silence.
“That’s perfectly normal. We’ve never been apart since the day I became your mentor.”
“Yeah, that’s true,” Zack mumbled, taking a long breath. “It’s just so odd, ya’know. I’ve always thought as us as a team. Guess I should get used to this huh, being on missions alone. I’m abit nervous to be honest.”
Angeal yawned. Zack was nervous? Then it was to be expected. It was his first mission alone, recalling when he had been assigned first time solo. He was two years younger then Zack. “Yes. You’ll have many missions alone. As long as you hold onto your pride and your dreams, you’ll be fine.”
Zack smiled slightly. “I know, and I won’t. Well, I guess I’ll let you go. Bet you’re falling asleep on me!” he chuckled lightly.
Angeal closed his eyes, listening to Zack breathe against the receiver. The boy could be so damn cute sometimes, hearing his student whine about dropping his glass of water on to the floor. “Yeah. I was sleeping. Listen Zack, it’s fine to be nervous. Just remember your dreams, it will outweigh any doubt you have.”
“Least it was water and not juice. That would have left a stain.”
Zack wasn’t listening again. His student even on the phone could be so easily distracted. Angeal had never noticed before, they never really spoke on the phone, always hanging around eachother in person.
“Did you hear me Zack?”
“Uh, yeah, sorry. I’ll remember that tomorrow.”
Angeal frowned. His student could be such a handful, but it was what made Zack so adorable and different from the rest of the SOLDIERs. Everyone was usually so serious. “Sleep now Fair. You have a long day tomorrow.”
Zack picked up the sheets off the floor, tossing them over him.
“Alright, I’ll try. Maybe I should count chocobos. Anyways, I’ll let you go. Night Angeal. And hey, thanks alot. I feel much better now.”
“Goodnight.” Angeal hung up.
Zack slapped his cellphone shut and placed it on the nightstand, snuggling into the comforter. His lips curled into a weak smile as he closed his eyes, feeling suddenly tired. It was his worry that was keeping him awake, feeling glad he called Angeal. Somehow Angeal always knew how to make him feel better with just using simple words.
