Shiina Yousuke on the steps of the shrine-like building, arms folded over his knees, the sunset at his back as he watched and listened to the sounds of Ikkou training, the drums pounding in time with his heartbeat. This was a different kind of training, one that he couldn’t really participate in and he struggled with the feelings of helplessness that came with that knowledge. During his time as a Hayate ninja Yousuke had seen a lot of things he had never expected to, as well as fighting a lot of things he’d never expected to, yet all of his experience had counted for nothing when he’d come up against the Makamou.
The Douji - as Kasumi-san had called them - they hadn’t been a problem really, not all that different from the enemies Jakanja had thrown at them, but the children, the giant children, they were a whole different story. If he still had his shinobi machine it would be different - he’d like to see the Makamou take on that - but he didn’t and that was all the was to it. Besides, supposedly the only thing that could destroy the Makamou was pure sound and he wasn’t much good with that; he’d struggled enough to master the traditional guitar in order to use the Mammoth Guitar as it was. He just didn’t have the ear for music that Nanami did, or that Ikkou did, come to that.
Music seemed to have been a part of Ikazuchi training, though, as both Ikkou and Isshu had had at least some training in the taiko drums as well as the traditional guitar; just as well, seeing as Ikkou’s drumming skills were what he was training in now, enhancing them, focusing on them with a fierce intensity as he and Hibiki-san continued their session. Yousuke wasn’t entirely sure of Hibiki-san yet, or the Takeshi organisation as a whole - whoever heard of people turning into oni anyway? - but Ikkou had taken to them easily enough. Or at least, as easily as he took to anyone, anyway.
It was a mystery to Yousuke, though, just why Ikkou had taken to this so easily - it wasn’t like him at all to simply accept something just like that. Unless it was part of Ikkou that still felt he had to make up for the things he’d done in the past, make up for helping Jakanja, make up for doing the things he’d spent his whole life being trained to do. Yousuke sighed and tested his chin on his arms; just when he thought he’d got Ikkou figured out, just when he thought the other man was happy and had put the past behind him, something like this happened.
Or maybe Ikkou just needed an enemy to fight to feel useful, that was something Yousuke could relate to. Since defeating Jakanja he’d been at loose ends, despite going on the missions that were part of being a Hayate ninja, and having a target, a definite enemy to face gave him a certain sense of purpose again. Or it had done, sometimes he wasn’t so sure. He could fight the Douji no problem, it was having to leave Ikkou to fight the Makamou alone that he hated; he’d been watching Ikkou’s back for the past three years and the knowledge that now he had to let Ikkou fight alone went against everything he was.
And besides, seeing Ikkou transform into something other than his Gouraijer suit was something he still hadn’t got used to. Neither was the feeling that, the more involved Ikkou got with the Takeshi organisation, the more he was going to lose him.
