Sand was forming under the girl's feet. Kairi took a few steps back, a little frightened. 'Where is he?' she thought.

"Kairi!" came a voice, as if to answer the redhead's question. Kairi turned around and saw a boy running towards her. Her eyes widened.

"Sora!" she replied, wanting to be reunited with her friend. She took a step forward, but the ground lurched and she landed in Sora's arms.

"Kairi!" said Sora again, helping her up. A serious expression on his face replaced his normally carefree one. "Remember what you said before? I'm always with you too. I'll come back to you, I promise!"

The two surfaces trembled again in silence before Kairi responded. Feeling herself drift away from Sora, she only managed to say one thing before their connection was broken. "... I know you will!"

Sora eyed the Dark Keyblade that Ansem had left behind. "A Keyblade that unlocks people's hearts..." he said quietly, glancing at Kairi's motionless form. If her heart was within his... Now he knew why she wouldn't wake up. He walked over to the Dark Keyblade and picked it up. "I wonder..."

"Sora, no!" yelled Donald, running forward. But Sora just stood there and smiled at his friends. Without second thought, he thrust the Dark Keyblade through his chest.

At that exact moment, Kairi woke up. The first thing she saw was Sora, with the Dark Keyblade sticking out of his body. Kairi ran forward as he fell back, trying to catch him. Though, as soon as she tried to throw her arms around him, his body turned into millions of little specks of light, then completely vanished.

"Sora!" cried Donald. "Come back!" Kairi, however, paid no attention to the mage. She was shaking, her arms outstretched, her eyes blank and welling up with tears.

"S-Sora," she hiccupped. "A-are... A-are y-you r-really..." Memories of herself and Sora back on Destiny Islands flooded her mind. She envisioned Sora's cheerful smile one last time. She stood up, tears flowing freely down her face. "No," she said quietly. "He can be gone... No... I won't let him go!"
