“Yoruichi-san,” Kisuke said one morning, stepping brightly into the kitchen, “you’re looking radiant today! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, Ururu and Jinta are fighting outside so I don’t hear it, and I—I am looking especially handsome today. We complement each other so well, Yoruichi! I think we make a pretty pair, a~n?” He placed his hands on the kitchen table, across from where she sat.
Yoruichi barely looked up from the morning paper. “Control yourself, Kisuke.” She sipped at the glass of milk that was held in her hand, and then set it precariously on the edge of the table, her eyes still on the newspaper.
Kisuke huffed and sat down. “You’re much too practical, Yoruichi. Whatever happened to being quixotic, romantic, and spontaneous?” He batted his eyelashes, and she looked at him with disdain.
“Kisuke,” Yoruichi responded, picking up her glass and gesturing at him with it, causing the liquid to slush dangerously close to the rim, “I think that you fill your romance quota as well as mine. If I acted like you, the both of us would go around reciting poetry and dancing in the streets and looking utterly stupid. I have to defend my dignity here.”
“Dignity?” He looked shocked at the idea. “DIGNITY? That’s disgraceful, Yoruichi-san! I think that I will spend today being as chivalrous as possible, just so that you can see that romance is truly a wonderful thing that does indeed have dignity associated with it!”
Yoruichi sighed. “Do what you want. I’m going out.” She got up from the table and started towards the door, but Kisuke scrambled up from his seat and held up a hand to stop her, gallantly offering his arm. Yoruichi looked at him for a moment as if he had just grown another head, but reluctantly took his arm with a light touch as he guided her towards the door with wide, knightly steps. When they reached the door, he took the liberty of opening it for her, bowing as she made to start outside. Yoruichi smiled to herself at the absurdity of his actions, but knew better than to question them. She began to make the few steps that would take her out the door, but stopped short as she realized what he was doing. He was holding his breath.
As she realized this, she grasped hold of a thin, transparent thread for a moment—maybe it was a strand of his inscrutable logic, or maybe it was a fact of the universe kept hidden expect to those who ran around opening doors and then holding their breath—she didn’t know. She knew, however, that at that moment, she was having some very romantic, ardent impulses and she would be damned if she wasn’t going to act on them.
When Kisuke realized that she had paused her in walk, he looked up curiously at her. Yoruichi smiled mischievously, then grasped his face in her hands and pulled his lips up to hers.
