Disclaimer: I do not own Bleach or anything else of Tite Kubo’s, including, but not limited to, his house, his car, his mother, or his soul. Tragic, I know. (Also, for the purposes of this fic, I do not own the song “The Red Dress”. It belongs to Justin Pierre and the other awesome guys of Motion City Soundtrack.)

AN- You’ve all seen the red dress, right? =] If you haven’t, then go watch the ending for the Bleach Jump Festa 2006. You’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

-----------------------------------------------------------

“I like you hair much better that way, when it hangs out front, when it hangs out front. With tilted head like a listener, but I’m just thinking about the red dress. I like the red dress.”- “The Red Dress”, Motion City Soundtrack

-----------------------------------------------------------

They called it “the red dress”. Yoruichi seldom wore it, but when she did, it was enough to make Kisuke’s eyes fall out of their sockets.

It had been a gift from him, given on a whim. One day, walking down the street, on some errand or another, he had seen the red dress in a store window. He told Yoruichi later how he had stopped in the middle of the busy sidewalk and stared at it, completely blocking the flow of pedestrian traffic, then stepped into the store and bought it.

When Kisuke came home, Yoruichi was sitting in his kitchen happily sipping a glass of milk and watching birds flit across the sky through the window, her eyes following their shapes with intensity. He walked into the room and handed her the box that contained the red dress, and she tore her eyes away from the sky to give him a questioning look.

“What’s this?”

“Open it.”

Yoruichi rolled her eyes, but obligingly lifted the top off the box. When she saw the red dress, her eyes grew wide and a smile spread across her face. “And here I thought you were done with spontaneous surprise gifts,” she teased as she picked the red dress up and ran her fingers over the fabric. “Ever since that disaster with the catnip I figured you had given up.”

He laughed, sitting down in the chair next to her. “The catnip was a mistake, I admit. But I think this gift is nice, don’t you, Yoruichi-san?”

Her smile grew wider, evolving into that cat-like grin that was so familiar to him. “‘Nice’ doesn’t even begin to say it. Thank you for thinking of me!” She nudged him with her shoulder playfully. “You shouldn’t have, though.”

Kisuke waved his hand dismissively. “No one would look prettier in the red dress than you, so I thought that I should just spare everyone the displeasure of seeing someone less perfect than yourself wearing it.”

Yoruichi made a small, happy noise at his words, then leaned over and kissed his cheek loudly, the “muah” sounding clear in the air.

Kisuke smiled happily at her. “I’m glad you like the red dress. I just wonder when you’ll get a chance to wear it…”

-----------------------------------------------------------

He hadn’t been expecting her to be in the red dress.

“Come one,” Yoruichi said, her hand on her hip, standing in the doorway of his room. The light from the hall shone behind her, giving her dark skin a golden glow. The red dress was perfect on her, its hue making her look like she was clothed in a tropical flower. With a playful smile, she announced her intentions: “We’re going out.”

Kisuke was still for a moment, and then he nodded, a wide grin beginning on his face.

To be continued in dress-up (part two).
