Urahara hadn’t expected what he’d seen; walking by an open door he had caught sight of an exchange that had thrown his world into sharp relief. He had seen the two women standing close together, making simple exchanges that were common enough. He had even smiled, happy to see them bonding. They both needed it, he thought. Then the small, pale girl had leaned up and placed a kiss on the dark woman’s cheek.

That was all Urahara saw. His feet carried him away, his mind a whirligig of flying thoughts and accusations. I never knew, he thought. I never knew. Why didn’t I know? I should have known.

He never spoke to Yoruichi about it.
