| Because Attempts have been made to get my friend into Sherlock Holmes... |
[18 Jul 2009|08:11pm] |
So a friend of mine is possibly lurking around, and if not, she's elsewhere doing random things. I've been attempting to get her into Sherlock Holmes because, well, one is done in Russian and she's learning said language, and because is fun to convert others share.
So I was happy when she shared an article from "Mental Floss" with me that involved Holmes' creator. After all, he was the main man that created, killed, and resurrected Holmes. 'Course the last part was mostly because everyone was whining...
So, for everyone who can see it!

Jacquelynn Morris of the Watson's Tin Box scion society is asking everyone to spread the word, and if you'll be in the Baltimore area in August I can promise you that this is a worthwhile event; I attended last year, and not only was the event a blast, I held a book signing and sold all but three copies. Check it out and enjoy!
***
As most of you are aware, Watson's Tin Box is presenting another gathering of Sherlockians from far and wide at our second annual "A Scintillation of Scions." This year's event will be on Saturday, August 15, at Claret Hall in Clarksville, Maryland. Please visit our web site, www.watsonstinbox.org, for specifics and a downloadable registration form. If you have any questions please email me at this address. [This was sent BCC to protect the privacy of those on the mailing list.]
Registration is still open, but will be closed in just a few short weeks. Be sure to send in your registration and encourage your friends in your local scions to register as well!
In addition to a stellar lineup of presenters, we will have a Sherlockian Limerick contest, a Sherlockian hat fashion show and a traditional afternoon tea. Watson's Tin Box founder, Paul Churchill, passed away last November and his family has arranged with us to have items from his collection on sale at the Scintillation. I have seen his collection and it is amazing! Don't miss your opportunity to acquire a remembrance of a dear man, and to add to your Sherlockian collection as well. All proceeds from this sale will benefit the family of Paul Churchill.
Please spread the word of the Scintillation and the sale to all Sherlockians of your acquaintance. Hope to see you in August!

| Newbie with canon question... |
[14 Jul 2009|08:56pm] |
|
Hey all :) I’m almost finished reading the canon, and there was one thing which really puzzled me. Right at the start of The Man with the Twisted Lip, when Kate Whitney comes calling with troubles – does Mary actually refer to Watson as “James”, or is there something seriously wonky with my edition? Last I checked, his name was definitely John. Apologies if this has been asked before. ^^

Dancing Men sculpture
I'm not affiliated with the artist--I was just searching for Holmes/Victoriana stuff to put into a Treasury on Etsy and ran across the piece, and figured this group would get a kick out of it.

| book sale. |
[05 Jul 2009|08:18am] |
Hey Holmes comm. I'm new around here, and I come bearing a book sale. Over here in this post at my journal I'm selling several pastiche books -- one is a compilation of miscellaneous pastiche stories, two are by Laurie R. King.
What a lovely thing a link is.
Other than that, hello. I'm Eugene, and I've been into Holmes since I was a little kid and brought the complete stories to my first time at sleepaway camp. Other personal loves include Watchmen and anything else by Alan Moore, the New York School of poetry, Truman Capote, and HP Lovecraft.

| Book covers, and some icons |
[23 Jun 2009|11:47pm] |
I've been lurking around here for a while, but this is my first post; hi guys. So: covers. Many of them are boring old 'silhouette-Holmes-with-hat-and-pipe' images, or Sidney Paget illustrations with text slapped on top - but just as many use original artwork, of both the characters and the scenery, and some of those are really very good. My experience with covers has been limited (I got myself a couple of complete collections quite early and don't go in for pastiches), but there are two I've liked quite a lot:
( blah blah blah... )
So: who are your unsung illustrative heroes?

| Sherlock Holmes, Prince Florizel and Father Brown: Some of Eccentricity |
[23 Jun 2009|06:36am] |
Dear Sherlockians I'd like to introduce with the essay written by me :) replies are welcome all images are stolen from films: Sherlock Holmes LenFilm studio series (LenFilm, 1979-1986) The Adventures of Prince Florizel (based on R.L. Stevenson's stories, LenFilm, 1979) A Face on the Target (based on Chesterton's stories about Father Brown and Horne Fisher, 1978 - Lithuanian studio) cross-posted in my LJ: http://alek-morse.livejournal.com/23218.html
Sherlock Holmes, Prince Florizel and Father Brown: Some of Eccentricity
(c) Alexander SEDOV, essay / 2009 When Sherlock Holmes is not busy with a case, he fires a monogram of Queen Victoria on the wall of his room. By contrast, Bohemian Prince Florizel runs from the cases because they are state concerns, he replaces a suit, puts on a wig and glues moustaches. Eccentricity is peculiar of two our heroes. Sometimes, it’s to such an extent that both wish to involve in the eccentricities as many people. For example, Florizel has decided to replace reprisals over the enemy with a duel. To find suitable seconds, he sifts all without business of gentlemen loafing about London. Carriage of Prince selects the idlers and brings them in a leased private mansion. The furniture is rented, the servants and an orchestra are employed, wines and snack are ordered. And all for that, observing from a portiere for the meeting, Florizel could choose two perfect gentlemen, - enough free in their actions to be got involved in adventure, and enough scrupulous in points of honour not to give out another's secret. The weapon of the prince is Psychology multiplied by an eccentricity, and powered with good manners.

There are two brand spanking new character posters for the upcoming Holmes adaptation starring Robbie Jr:
( under the cut )
I read somewhere that RDJ confessed to losing a lot of weight for the role. I have to admit, I think finally somebody is doing Watson justice. I love Nigel Bruce dearly, but it's taken a long time for Dr Watson to overcome the popular duffer image.

I'm almost noticing a trend here. I think Frogwares got a Star Trek movie curse or something, because a lot of their games are acting like it...
So as I put in my last Game Review here, I hoped the 5th game of the Frogwares series was good. I've just gotten done playing it, and will admit that I'll play this one all day if I must, but the ending felt like a cop-out, and by the near end they'd fallen back on the bad Watson-writing that I disliked. It started out so well!
Luckily there's no anime for me to compare this to!...just a movie...
*sigh*
( The Review! )
All in all I give the game a 3.5, not a solid number as I gave the others, because I think they ran out of ideas and threw the ending haphazardly together. Hell, even "Nemesis/SHvAL" has a better ending then this did! But that's that, and it was fun to play up until then.
