Gauge question!
I know the easiest thing to do would probably to just knit a gauge to check, but I was wondering if there was any sort of way to calculate or guesstimate at least something like this....
So I want to make a blanket, but the pattern suggests using bulky yarn. Now, I live in Southern California and it never gets cold enough that I'd need a blanket that thick so I'd rather use a medium weight yarn (plus there's a brand I like that has the colors I want to use), so does anyone know if there's any easy way to test gauge to see how to change needle size? I don't know if it makes a huge difference but bulky seems to be REALLY thick compared to the medium brand I use so I don't want to use the needle size recommended by the pattern and end up with a super small blanket.
As far as just knitting a test swatch goes, I tend to knit right on recommended gauges (and mostly knit toys and stuff so it doesn't make a huge difference if I don't). Anyway, I checked the gauge on the yarn and the gauge for the pattern in the book and it looks like I should be using the same size, but I wasn't sure if there was any sort of chart that lists what the gauge should be for certain weight yarn/size needles that I can just look over to figure out the conversion or if I should just suck it up and knit a sample gauge.
Either way, thanks for any advice!

9:57 pm - A Little Help
|

A friend of mine is getting a knitted doll book published, and she posted this the other day:
I'm working on my author questionnaire for my book, Knit This Doll!, and I could use some help! Could you guys suggest any zines, blogs, magazines that might be a good place for a copy of KTD! to go? Specifically I would like to hit up indy, d.i.y, unique craft and knitting websites, blogs, magazines, but anything could be helpful!! Thanks so much!
Does anyone know of any? It would be a MASSIVE help to her if you could suggest some, especially doll centric ones! Thank you!!

Hi, it's me again, and I'm in a much better mood than the last time I posted. I've finally finished the Nintendo DS case that I was working on. The instructions for the straps called to knit 3-stitch stockinette and then make buttonholes at the end and sew buttons on the top. However, I made i-cord straps because they look nicer but I didn't really think about the buttonhole part when I started. I tried making buttonholes in the i-cord but that didn't work too well. Should I rip out the i-cord and make stockinette straps or is there a way to fashion buttonholes into an i-cord?
Also, I'll post pictures when I'm done with the straps. :)

I need help under standing these direction... I'm making this shawl: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/carols-clever-little-shawl and in the pattern it says:
"Divide for ribbed tube: Divide the existing 34 stitches evenly onto two DP needles by transferring sts alternately (place 1 st on 1 needle and next st on other needle) between two DP needles held in right hand (17 sts on each DP needle). Work sts from front DP needle in K1, P1 ribbing for a total of 2 1/ 2 inches, inc 6 sts on last row. Break yarn. Work sts from back DP needle in K1, P1 ribbing for 2 1/ 2 inches, inc 6 sts on last row. Do not break yarn this time.
I'm little confused by the parts I put in bold. When it says transferring sts alternately does t hat mean, putting every other stitch on a different needle? Or what? And what does it mean by "do not break yard this time"? Thank you so much for all your help guys.

11:50 am - Hi there!

I just found this community and thought I'd go ahead and introduce myself. Long time knitter and crocheter. I think my mom taught me before I could do anything more pragmatic, like reading and writing. :) I've done loads of afghans, scarves, hats and socks and recently moved on to sillier things. Sillier things being anything out of Amigurumi Knits by Hansi Singh.

I looked at the way I have been knitting for the past few years and I realized...I knit and purl backwards! I purl from the front loop and knit from the back loop...but it looks OK...right? I'm not sure. It's making learning all the decreases kind of hard, because in order to do them, I have to...oh, it's just confusing... >.<
Yeah...that's all I came to say...

12:55 am - Frustrated
|

xhouseatlantic

Hi, my name's Nicole I'm new to LJ and I specifically sought out a knitting community as soon as I joined because I am so frustrated with sewing seams for my projects that if I can't find a class, or someone to physically teach me, I'm going to quit knitting. I'm a self-taught knitter which is frustrating in itself because I don't know anyone else who knits. So whenever I need help or can't figure anything out, I have to try and research it on Google or find videos on YouTube. And it isn't helping me right now.
I'm trying to knit this right now and all the seams I've tried so far looks so bad that I can't possibly leave it that way and deal with it. My edges have never looked nice so when I sew the seams it looks like a giant clusterfuck of yarn. I've tried using the edge stitching or whatever it's called but it never looks like I've seen other people's.
And also the game cartridge part requires the sides to be sewn down along the edge and then two seams in the middle to separate the cartridge slots and I have absolutely no idea how to even do that let alone do it invisibly like in her picture.
I have all the knitting done and both of the straps but I can't actually finish the project because of the seams.
Sorry, I don't know if any of you can help me over the internet but I need some sort of advice before I implode.

1:22 am - Back Loop? What Back Loop?
|

sisyphus_gurl8

Um...so I had a bit of a nasty shock tonight when I discovered that about two years ago when I taught myself how to purl, I taught myself incorrectly and have always purled through the back loop. I'm a terrible visual learner, and I've since found the offending diagram that set me on the wrong path. But I've never really had a problem with any of my projects; they've always looked fine to me. Can someone explain what knitting through the back loop actually does? If I switch styles in the middle of a project, will it look weird?

Well, I have one ankle sock done already which is fabulous. That is so satisfying. However, the pattern I used had a couple of hiccups in it. The short row heel was missing a line of instructions so I had to scratch my head before I figured out what was wrong. I had only gone a couple of rows before I figured out what they were trying to accomplish. The wording is rather confusing at parts too. The picot edge bind off...I'm not sure I did exactly right. Like I said, the wording is kind of funky. I do have the little bumps on my edging though so I say, good enough until I find someone who can show me how its done and I'll compare what I did to that. Vogue Knitting: the Ultimate Sock Book, page 87. Toe up anklets. My first time doing toe up socks, short row heels and a picot edge. Sweet! I can't wait to cast on the second sock. It's a funny angle since I was taking a picture of my own foot. My ankles aren't huge I swear! lol

2:03 pm - Blocking

Does anybody have any experience blocking Bamboo Yarn? I just finished making my first lace piece and the next step is to block. I've tried doing some research and have come up with conflicting results. Some say it works, others have said the bamboo will lose it's sheen and softness. Any thoughts? Thanks

I have been in the process of plotting out a fairly complex lace blanket, based on patterns of square lace shawls (Shetland style - a base square and then worked out from there).
I have my pattern roughly sketched out (using a honeycomb lace as my square and then patterns from Knitted Lace of Estonia for the borders) and was basing it on a square shawl pattern from a book that has gone mysteriously missing (Okay, likely a knitting friend borrowed my Folk Shawls).
Is there a place online where I could find a basis to work up a square lace shawl (like how to make the corners)? I've made them before, but obviously, I'm not working from a pattern here.

So I'm working on a good pattern/way to make cute needle cases and I wanted some feedback on the one I made. Eventually I'd love to put these up on my (currently inactive) etsy, but before then I want to perfect them. So I was hoping you lovely knitters could give me some con crit about this, my first full-sized case.

11:56 am - The Weekend of Project Completion
|

missmatchd

So this weekend I decided to finish some of the projects I had sitting in my knitting basket. And by some, I mean two - an Elefante and a market bag.
( This Way... )
Also, question - I'm an inside out circle knitter. Or at least, that's what I call it - when I knit in the round, it always comes out with the right side on the inside of the needles. Usually not a big deal, but it did sort of create some problems with the Elefante since before I added any stuffing, I had to basically finish it and then shove all the stuffing through the little hole that was left. Anyone else knit like this? Or have any way that I could fix it? (Besides purling every round, which I guess would fix it).

9:17 pm - Out of a slump

So who all here are die-hard, year-round knitters? I'd perhaps like to be, but I know most anything crafty I do tends to come and go. I got about 2/3 of the way through a sweater and hadn't picked up the needles in... a good month or two. The other day, though, I got a local yarn shop's monthly email about their June 'sweater' of the month -- a simple knit market bag! The light bulb went on in my head and off I went! One is already finished, and I started the second today. I ended up using this easy pattern from Lion Brand, though there are dozens readily available online. The only thing I did differently -- a three needle bind off is a nice, easy way to finish the strap without 'sewing.'
Any favorite projects to get you going after a while away from your yarn stash?

This is knitted and crocheted actually. (from leftover yarn from This Sweater) The bottom is just a crocheted circle, I picked up and knitted in plain stockinette until the drawstring part:
(Also done with the help of crochet) A little garter stitch, some more crochet for the straps, vintage hem tape used as a ribbon, finished.
