The TV Addict talks with Michaela Conlin
Exclusive Interview: BONES Star Michaela Conlin
September 3rd, 2008

The TV Addict with BONES Star Michaela Conlin in Los Angeles, August 2008

Full disclosure. Prior to last season, I had never watched a single episode of BONES and quite frankly, callously dismissed it as yet another oversimplified procedural [ie. CSI].

Yet after having the pleasure of interviewing TJ Thyne, Emily Deschanel, Eric Millegan and Michaela Conlin last Fall and absolutely falling head-over-heels in love with what by all accounts seems to be the nicest cast in Hollywood, I quickly changed my tune and jumped on the BONES bandwagon.

Since then, I’ve been hooked. Because as any BONES fan will tell you. The show is so much more than your average who-done-it! Rather, it’s about the relationships between the characters. Which is why fans are still reeling from last May’s shocking finale. And more to the point, why I started off my interview with BONES star Michaela Conlin by asking the following.

How shocked were you by the outcome of last season’s finale?
Michaela Conlin: It was a big shocker wasn’t it.

I mean “WOW,” I did not see that coming. When did you discover that Zack was Gormogon’s Apprentice?
Maybe a week before we got the script. I mean we started hearing rumors, but really it was confirmed when we got the script. Eric had been with the show from the beginning so it definitely was a shock for everyone. But I think he’ll be back for a couple of episodes. At least that’s what I’m hearing.

And by ‘hearing,’ would it be safe to assume that it’s actually going to happen and Zack will be back!
Okay, Yes [she smiles] Zach will definitely be back.

As a fan I feel so bad for an actor when it’s revealed that they’re actually a somewhat psychotic killer [or killer’s apprentice] and forced to exit the show.
It is sad, but Eric is doing fine.

Zack aside, fans are really interested in what’s going to happen to Angela and Hodgins this year. Its unfortunate that the WGA strike really put their relationship on on the back-burner last season.
I know. Angela’s ex is a wonderful guy and very attractive and we’re definitely going to address the issue head on in the season opener. It’s a big deal and I think fans will be surprised as to what happens.

Will Angela’s ex be sticking around?
I don’t know. I’m not exactly sure what will happen beyond what we’ve shot. But I can say another ex of Angela’s is going to be arriving.

Really? Have they cast him?
I don’t think they cast… her. It’s a little crush of Angela’s, an ex-girlfriend. It’s really going to be an excellent season.

With no work stoppages.
God Willing.

So you didn’t get to go to London? What’s up with that?
I didn’t. David and Emily got to go to London. We were stuck in the lab. Kind of a bummer. But we’re all rallying to go somewhere now.

If given the choice, where in the world would you like to go?
Back to Tokyo. I was recently there and people watch the show and know the show. It was totally crazy.

Have you seen the Japanese version of the show? What do you think of the woman who dubs your voice?
I actually haven’t seen an episode of BONES in Japan and I really haven’t given my voice dub a thought until right now. But that’s so bizarre. Somebody would be dubbing my voice in Japanese!

Do you get to go overseas to promote the show?
We don’t actually go there, we usually promote it from here. But David and Emily spent a lot of time on location [in London] so the season opener should be really fun.

Anything else you can spill on the new season?
Well we’re thrilled with the addition of John Francis Daley who’s hysterically funny and has been a really great addition to the cast. I know there is going to be a lot of relationship stuff going on this season. With everyone, including Angela.

Don’t miss tonight’s two-hour BONES finale on FOX [and Global TV in Canada] starting at 8PM.

The more they all keep saying how excellent this season's gonna be, the less I believe them :/
Especially after last night...

I don't think I can read this stuff any more. I joined this forum in July and the show is somewhat ruined for me--but I'm not sure if it's the Zach thing or this forum.

I was disappointed last night because I read a spoiler last week that mention the relationship triangle stuff with Angela and Hodgins. So the thrill was gone from the episode for me. Booth and Brennan being in London didn't do much for me either.

Maybe next week'll be better.

I don't think I can read this journal anymore, period. You guys are seriously Debbie Downers. One of you party poopers need to start a new one called: "We watch Bones but if you ask us 'why?' we could not answer!"

Or maybe the people who actually enjoy this show still should speak up more?

I know in most communities (not just on LJ), the people who dislike something overshadow those who actually like it - but I'm sure that there are a lot more people who enjoy Bones and actually might have liked this episode than are posting about it.

I've only skimmed the responses so far so that I could make an unbiased post later on - because, while I know that people are entitled to their opinions, the hatred does turn me off as well.

Now this isn't directed at any one in particular or meant to be bitchy, but if someone doesn't like something then why bother watching it and then posting about how much you hated it? The writers are never going to please everyone...but its just a TV show. Shouldn't people be spending more time focusing on stuff they DO like then?

I dunno. I get your point, and I agree with most of what you've said. But at the same time, Bones is by FAR the most negative fandom I'm in. I don't know if it's something about the show, or if it attracts a certain TYPE of fan, but people never seem satisfied with the show, which is first and foremost for entertainment purposes. (Well, actually, it's to make money. But from a fan's POV, it's entertainment. And if you're not entertained, why bother?) There are people around here who have been complaining about stuff since day one, and they're still here. I really, really don't get it.

And I think that the case with a lot of people who DO enjoy the show is that they don't even read the response posts anymore for fear of being brought down. At least, that's the way it is with me. I liked the episode last night, and so I was afraid to even look at the discussion post because I knew what it was gonna say. I just don't feel like debating that stuff anymore. I'd rather continue to think of the episode in a positive way, you know?

Yeah, I'm usually pretty positive. I did post a reaction post on my LJ, and I made sure to mention what I enjoyed about the episodes, and then a few problems I had with it. In fact, even though I feel about 50-50 about the episode, I actually ended up posting more positive than negative.

I get what you say about communities. It makes me kind of sad, because, yes, it is possible to be a fan of TV show and dislike some episodes, but I dunno, I just feel like sometimes the comments just make me wonder why they still watch the show rather than being displeased with a way an episode is turned out.

Like [info]soonersurrender, I rather think of the show as a positive way. If it honestly doesn't click with me anymore, so be it.

Let me clarify a bit, because I know some people may take what I said the wrong way.

I'm not saying that I think people have to like all aspects of a show and agree with everything that happens on it. There are bound to be times where people aren't happy and disagree. But there are some people who are so vehemently against everything that happens on the show that I tend to wonder why they still watch then.

I know, in the past, when a show lost its appeal for me (one of my favorites), I bailed instead of trying to force myself to watch something that I no longer had any interest in. No one is holding a gun to anyone's head to force them to watch a particular show so I don't understand why people keep torturing themselves. I'm guessing they're hoping that it will get better probably, but when you're already in a negative mindset and nitpicking at everything, do people honestly think it will?

Hi. ♥. Exactly. There is nothing wrong with not liking something. I did my fair share of complaining at the end of last season. But it's different when it's just constant negativity. And that's what bugs me. And I feel like I should also clarify by backing you up on that one.

ita ... I also don't understand people who actually stop watching the show but come to forums and communities to complain about an episode they didn't even see.

I could tell you why I watch the show.

I liked the male/female, skeptic/believer relationship between Booth and Bones. It was like a more light hearted version of the XFiles without the aliens and stuff. I enjoyed "the foresics" of the cases and how the whole team would pull together to solve a murder. I also liked the sidebar relationship stuff--it was as much part of the show as the dead bodies.

And in direct response to you--I have enjoyed this show a great deal. I was unhappy with Zach leaving and disappointed with last night's episode. So what? I needed to rant. No one I work with/am friends with watches this show, so who do I have to rant to?

lol... I am sorry, I had to. Totally tongue in cheek. I completely understand the need to rant. There just needs to be equality here. I did the same thing after the recent XFiles movie because my boyfriend was going to sell me to one of those Russian body part-graphing doctors.

I am pretty darn easy to please! If it would not have been such a mystery before it was released I sadly think I would have enjoyed it more. I was expecting it to be on par with the previous one and then I realized it was like comparing the British Open (played on St Andrews) with the US Open (played at Torrey Pines) (continuing the golf reference).

I agree. It's not the exact same as it was in s1, s2, s3. If it was, it'd be boring with no character development. If you can write the characters better, cool, have at it with fanfiction. But I thought this was a community for people to talk about a show they liked to like, not a show they love to hate. And let's all get over Zack. Yes, it was perhaps a flawed move, yes the WGA strike sucked. Zack is a character. Eric Milligan, as far as I know, is still breathing and alive and well. And he was written off in May. It's September. Sorry, there's my rant.

God, thank you for this. Not only do I agree with what everyone has said in this thread so far, but I specifically agree with you - complaining about Zack has gotten beyond tiresome. I just joined this fandom in April and have been highly disappointed with this community (and others) due to all the constant bitching and moaning about what is supposedly their "favorite show." Like you said, you don't have to like every minute of every episode (I have complaints about last night, too!), but if people can't see the necessity of certain plot twists and character growth in order to keep the show fresh... then I don't get why they still bother watching.

Found this 'article' on a blog I read about a month ago: http://chaosingeneral.blogspot.com/2008/08/bones-now-youre-just-complaining.html

The blogger, although ironically complaining about how she hates complainers, pretty much pinpoints every frustration I've had with this fandom since I joined.

As for the folks on this forum being a bunch of "Debbie Downers" -- that's neither true, nor fair. And Bones is hardly a negative fandom -- there are simply a lot of folks who truly love the show, who bought in to it from the pilot, and are having growing pains right along with the changes in the show.

Keep in mind that quite a few fans followed David Boreanaz from Angel to Bones, which was a huge leap. That show was completely different, and it wouldn't surprise me if there are leftover expectations from his prior performance.

Bones fans are passionate, and we are lucky to have forums like [info]206_bones to share our very varied opinions, positive and negative, without being censored.

If you're looking for a strictly enforced 'squee only' community, why not try out the boards at the show's official site. "Debbie Downers" get buried there very quickly, and often are never heard from again.

I do check out both... And why is Debbie Downer such a bad description of whats going on here? I read the episode discussion post and all of a sudden I hear "Whuh waaaaa" (See this for an example: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8253259004004602203). The "Whuh waaaaa" is often preceded by "Clark is not a filler for Zach, nor is any other person that they could possibly ever hire", "Angela and Hodgins could never have a realistic break up", "Booth and Brennan get all the air time [and/or] totally don't belong together", "This writing is horrible" and my personal favorite downer (drum-roll please) "I just wasted my time watching this show".

Hi! So did my comment start this whole debate or was it you? Because dear gods, not what I was looking for when I clicked on "post comment" LOL All I was saying is that cast members repeating how excellent the season is gonna be is a red flag for someone like me. I'm thinking it was my comment.

And I agree--being told by someone "it's going to be great" is like saying the opposite. As in "the lady doth protest too much."

I just don't want to read anymore. Even reading about the actors is like a spoiler for me, so I just don't want be on the forum anymore. It's nothing personal---everyone here is a Bones fan :). I just like my Bones on the telly...

I'm looking forward to seeing the upcoming episodes, and where they go with their current storylines. :)

The thing with Bones is: I started watching this summer, and while they'd take directions I wish they hadn't in an episode- it always worked out really well.

The Jack/Angela ending this episode was disappointing, but now I can't wait for Brennan to get back, because there's just going to be *so* much: finding someone to replace Clark for one, not to mention her having to interact with both Angela and Hodgins. It ought to make for a great storyline in my opinion. :)
