I've started a community for discussion of the 2007 hurricane season, now that it's starting to really kick off. Please join me at 2007_hurricanes before Dean makes Cat 3!

I created this one because someone on LJ claimed the 2007hurricanes name as a personal journal (so don't join that one!). The hurricane is currently churning north-northeastward, but is expected to increasingly turn northeastward, passing well to the east of Bermuda and offering no threat to the U.S.

Tropical Storm Helene (45 mph) is steaming westward at a good clip 835 miles W of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands. The system is expected to take on a more west-northwesterly track in time, and should eventually reach hurricane intensity. Right now, Helene is forecast to remain in the open waters of the central Atlantic.

A diffuse tropical wave continues to produce showers from the eastern Caribbean to just east of the Lesser Antilles. More thunderstorms flare east of Helene as a new tropical disturbance moves off the African coast..."

maybe the hush hush quiet 2006 atlantic season is going to turn out to be not so hush hush?!
i've read conflicting opinions about it from weather experts. some say that we won't be having such a horrible season afterall. others are saying not to let our gaurd down, that the season is going to kick up and become very active mid-way through. perhaps they were right?

personally i thought that all the hype about this season turned out to be not so worrysome, but now i am begining to think differently. what do you think??

xo/jes

from the weather channel website:

A broad area of low pressure 1525 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is now Tropical Depression Six. Steady strengthening is expected and the tropical depression could soon be Tropical Storm Florence. Its forecast northwest track would keep it well away from the Lesser Antilles, but this developing tropical cyclone will need to be monitored closely.

Even farther out in the Atlantic, a tropical low, in tandem with a cluster of showers and thunderstorms, is moving westward just southwest of the Cape Verde Islands.

Closer to the U. S., a tropical wave pushing westward into the central Caribbean Sea, shows no signs of further strengthening.

I am also nervous about the upcoming hurricane season. The news has told me that it should be the same if not twice as bad as last season. I am from the MS gulf coast and suffered a lot from Hurricane Katrina. The only thing that kept my town going was the church and volunteer groups. FEMA helped very little families if any at all. Hopefully they will be of more help this season.

Predictions

It is once again hurricane season, and it is time for hurricane hunters, storm enthusiasts and weather nerds to start watching radar, satellite images, The Weather Channel, and their local weather forecaster to see what is predicted to be a very busy 2006 hurricane season.

The following will contain a brief recap of my prediction versus actual hurricane activity for 2005 as well as my prediction for the 2006 season.

Anderson Cooper, hold on to your microphone.... it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

Last year, as a brand new blogger at the onset of the hurricane season, my fifth-ever post included the following:

Predictions are merely that. However, down here in S. Florida, they say that if you have a dry May, then it will be busy hurricane season. It rained like, part of two days this past month. We are down -6.65" of rain for the year in our area. Thus, we are looking at a busy hurricane season.

Well, we all know that the 2005 hurricane season was the busiest season on record since official records began in the 1880's.

Hurricane Facts from 2005:

There were 27 named storms.

There were 14 hurricanes.

There were a total of 7 Major (category 3 or higher) storms occurred in 2005.

*Major7 ~ interesting name, huh?*

The impact of the season was widespread and ruinous with record damages over $100 billion and at least 1,923 deaths.

So, that being said, my prediction for the 2006 season based on research, current water temperatures, atmospheric conditions, discussion with real experts as well as historical data yields the following:

This was my prediction in March, 2006

I predict 21 named storms.
I predict that 12 of these will become hurricanes.*
I predict that once again, 7 of these will become major hurricanes (category 3 or higher)
* due to the fact that South Florida where I live is almost 6.5 inches below normal rainfall for the year, I am upping my prediction of number of hurricanes to 14.

Dr. Gray and his staff out of the University of Colorado released their predictions at the beginning of April and they are calling for:
17 named storms
9 hurricanes
5 major hurricanes (cat. 3 or higher).

Does anyone else have any numbers?

NOAA: North Atlantic could see 10 hurricanes this season

The North Atlantic Ocean could see 10 hurricanes form this year and four to six of them become major storms, the National Hurricane Center announced Monday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advised coastal residents to "prepare, prepare, prepare" for a very active storm season.

NOAA predicts 13 to 16 named storms, with eight to 10 becoming hurricanes. Four to six could reach Category 3 strength or higher.

'06 Hurricanes May Hit New Target: The Northeast

In two weeks, the 2006 hurricane season will officially begin — and it may well be different from recent years.

The good news, experts say, is that due to a cyclical pattern, the hard-hit Gulf Coast most likey will escape the devastation it experienced last season. The bad news is that the concentration of hurricane activity is predicted to move up the eastern seaboard this season.

Study: Hurricanes Can Cause Long-Term Mental Problems

TALLAHASSEE -- A study by Tallahassee researchers shows that a hurricane can cause long-term mental health problems.

Sociologists at Florida State University studied adolescents who went through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and discovered some were more likely to suffer mental health problems years later.

The study examined nearly 1,000 adolescents impacted by Hurricane Andrew.

The researchers predict even more dire consequences for people who went through Hurricane Katrina.

They said more of those victims will face a higher risk of mental health problems for years to come.

Researches hope the study will prompt emergency response workers to place more emphasis on intervention efforts for hurricane victims.

The study is published in the Journal of Social Forces.
source
