Today at The Chemistry Set, I've posted a back-and-forth conversation between writer/journalist Kieron Gillen (Phonogram) and myself (writer of the music webcomic 1 Way Ticket) on the subject of music in comics. We discuss the portrayal, the uses, the effects, and the similiarities between music and comics.

If you have ever carved a band logo into a desk, If you decided what instrument to play based on what was needed to make a band with your friends, if you know who would be in the ‘Special Thanks’ liner notes of your debut album, if you have ever closed your eyes and imagined yourself surrounded by thousands of screaming fans — this one’s for you.
“Depicting music in comics is a huge challenge,” says Xeric Award winning artist Daniel Warner, Xeric Award Winner. “You usually see some musical notes, or lyrics written in wavy lines—it’s all very flaccid. Chris and I decided we needed something more visceral. What we came up with has sharp emotional claws. I’m eager to see how readers will respond.”
One Way Ticket is the story of a garage band with less-than-stellar potential that's lives are turned around when their leader, Sully, finds a possessed guitar that promises to turn the band around. But at what price?

Like a thunderbolt into your cheerios, a new page of 1 Way Ticket is online. It's page 21, and we're privvy to the post-performance high as the garage band Special Effects hang out in a greasy spoon dinner. Drummer Owen's crush Webster is conveniently on the scene, and he introduces her to the group.
