Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley
Fandom: Good Omens
Pairing: Aziraphale/Crowley
Theme set: Beta
Rating: T

1. Walking

Oh, god, thinks Crowley, he’s walking away, and it all comes crumbling down, because he’s alone in hell now, and he’s going to die, and its just struck him that no one really cares.

2. Waltz

“You know that no one really does that anymore- waltz, I mean,” comes the voice from the doorway, and Aziraphale replies sadly: “Yes, I know, it’s quite sad,” and he looks up, smiling slightly, “and so you simply must help me remedy that, mustn’t you?”; he stretches out his hand, and the demon can’t help but take it.

3. Wishes

“Fine,” Crowley snaps, “here’s what I wish— I wish that you would just shut up!”

4. Wonder

He doesn’t wonder anymore why no one comes into Aziraphale’s shop; he’s actually found that he likes the perpetual absence of customers and the lack of the stupid tinkle of the bell on the shop door, because that means that the angel doesn’t have to leave, and he can have him all to himself.

5. Worry

His brow furrows with worry: “Do you think that anyone.. up there... will mind if I’m going to the birthday party of the Antichrist?”; Crowley rolls his eyes, and tugs on Aziraphale’s arm- “Come on, idiot, you’ve already stopped Armageddon, argued with both the voice of God and Beelzebub, and fallen in love with a servant of the Adversary- what’s one slice of cake going to matter?”

6. Whimsy

Aziraphale, angel, agent of God, protector of Earth, immortal, and part-time Soho bookseller, has decided that from now on he shall try to be whimsical in everything he does, and Crowley, demon, agent of Satan, fallen angel, and (even if he denies it) lover of Aziraphale, is very, very nervous.

7. Wasteland

He walks, the man in white, through the wreckage of the world, and he sees everything—the small child, doll clasped at breast, mouth hanging open in wonder, eyes frozen open; the fat man cowering behind the bookshelf, blood from his neck forming a pool around his body; the man with the black wings, eyes closed, an expression of horror on his face, arms outstretched as if trying to hold someone, as if trying to placate someone, only to find themselves pushed away; he walks, the man in white, through the wreckage of the world, and as he picks up the solitary black feather floating in the wind, he smiles ever so slightly, and begins to walk away.

 8. Whiskey and rum

And sometimes, although he doesn’t like to admit it, Aziraphale lets Crowley get him drunk (although he makes sure to be very, very angry with him afterwards).

 9. War

Sometimes, in that floating place of sound and light and touch that she’s found herself in, War likes to watch them, the angel and the demon, standing hand in hand beside the duckpond, lost in their own world; the Others have wondered at this, because Heaven (or Hell, for that matter) knows that War isn’t a kind or loving person, but they shrug after a moment, because honestly, who knows the minds of the Four Horsemen, even themselves?

10. Weddings

“Pepper... and Adam?” says Crowley slowly, and Aziraphale nods happily; “Isn’t it just amazing?”; “I don’t know,” the demon says slowly, “I’ve never been to an antichrist’s wedding before...”

 11. Birthday

They had cake, chocolate, in fact, and he was okay with that, but Crowley would not, absolutely not, wear a paper hat.

 12. Blessing

Aziraphale had given up trying to bless him years ago after that incident in Babylon; now he just told him to cough somewhere else and please use a handkerchief next time, thank you very much.

 13. Bias

“And we demons aren’t really that bad, you know? It’s all... all societies fault! That’s... that’s what it is,” slurs Crowley to the watching angel, “it’s complete prejudice against demons, that’s it...”, and with that said, he falls over.

 14. Burning

He admits to making MTV, eighties exercise videos, and SUVs, but he will absolutely not own up to helping create Burn, Baby, Burn.

 15. Breathing

Sometimes Aziraphale has to remind Crowley to breathe when humans are around, because it slips his mind whenever the angel is near.

 16. Breaking

Every time he passes him now, a little part of him breaks, because it isn’t Aziraphale anymore, it’s just an empty shell, pretending to care about books and feeding the ducks and obscure eighteenth-century African poems, but the real Aziraphale is gone, fallen into oblivion, and he’ll never, ever come back.

 17. Belief

“Oh, I know you’ll come back,” says the angel, and smiles slightly as the demonic being beside him scowls.

 18. Balloon

“Seventeen tempted,” Crowley exclaims triumphantly, but the angel just smiles and replies eighteen saved, and the demon glares at him- “Hmph. What do you want, a balloon?”

19. Balcony

He can’t take it anymore, he would rather jump off a balcony eleven stories high than be in the same room with that demon one more minute; (admittedly, he would just unfurl his wings and catch himself at the last minute, but Aziraphale has pointedly chosen to ignore this fact.)

 20. Bane

“I hate you,” remarks the not-Crowley, his voice the sound of steel scraping against rust, “I despise everything you stand for, I despise your cowardice, I despise the way you always forget how to lock the door of your stupid bookshop and have to ask me for help.”

 21. Quiet

Crowley loves their quiet Thursday afternoons, with the lazy sunlight tiredly creeping across the faded brown floor; he stretched out on the worn-out couch, eyes half-open and watching golden dust motes dance across the ceiling, the angel buried in the armchair, flipping through some dusty tome or carefully marking something down in that precise way of his; the silence comfortably meandering on.

 22. Quirks

It’s the way Aziraphale absentmindedly picks at the fraying cuffs of his jacket and the way he only eats toast butter side up.

23. Question

Wensleydale sometimes asks Brian (who, as it turns out, isn’t so dumb after all, and a remarkably good kisser) if those two really love each other, like Pepper and Adam, and Brian smiles, and doesn’t say anything, and Wensleydale takes that as a yes.

 24. Quarrel

The angel silently offers him the umbrella, and the demon takes it; it’s not an apology, exactly, but it’s a start.

 25. Quitting

He leaves in the night, erasing any mark that he was ever there except the solitary white feather lying on the kitchen table.

 26. Jump

“I won’t say anything silly, like I’ll jump to the moon and fetch a star for you or something like that,” mutters Crowley, and Aziraphale smiles.

 27. Jester

“That’s not funny,” says the angel quietly, and the smile slowly fades from Crowley’s face.

 28. Jousting

It’s the last fight they ever had, before the… the end, and when he thinks back on it, eons later, he’ll smile, remembering the way they picked up sticks and pretended to joust, right in the middle of the park; passersby would stop, stare, and then smile, because who cared that they were two grown men- they were obviously in love, and that was all that really mattered.

 29. Jewel

“I bought you something,” said Aziraphale, blushing, as he slid the box across the café table; Crowley tore open the paper to find a golden ring, nestled in the remaining layer of tissue paper; “I’m sorry it was so plain… They were out of the ones with gems, and this was the last one…”; Crowley smiles and slips it on.

 30. Just

“You don’t have to kill me!” Crowley screams, clutching his remaining wing as the blood slides down his arm (and he can’t remember if he had blood, before, god, he can’t remember anything…); he stares up at the angel, outlined in blue light, that sword in his hand; he smiles, shaking out the feathers and brushing the speck of blood from his cheek; “Justice, Crowley… Justice.”

 31. Smirk

“Yes,” sighs Aziraphale as Pepper listens, wide eyed, “even as an angel he was like that… always flying around heaven like he owned the place with those gorgeous wings and that insufferable smirk…”; his voice falters and he glances at the table, surprised to find that his hands are shaking; “I… miss him,” he admits quietly.

32. Sorrow

“I did love you,” says Crowley bitterly, staring at the flames surrounding the earth and avoiding the angel’s tear stricken face, “I always loved you…”; his face twists into something resembling a smile as the sounds of the last screams reach his ears, and he crouches down so that he stares into the angel’s face; “I did love you,” he remarks, and sticks the sword into his stomach.

 33. Stupidity

“You’re an idiot…” sighs Crowley, and Aziraphale kisses him.

 34. Serenade

“I can’t sing,” moans Aziraphale, and Crowley shakes his head in amazement: “Stupid, anyone can do karaoke!”

 35. Sarcasm

The scariest thing, thinks Crowley, is not the thought of the thousands of millions of nightmarish demons waiting below to wreak eternal torment on him, or the steely winged creatures above silently staring down at him, ready to deal divine justice; no, it’s the fact that Aziraphale is attempting to use sarcasm, and failing miserably.

 36. Sordid

It’s sick and it’s dirty and it’s horrible, an angel loving a demon, but the curve of his neck and the twist of his smile and Aziraphale decides that he really wouldn’t mind falling.

37. Soliloquy

He doesn’t speak at the funeral (if it can be called a funeral…), but merely stands in the back, unwanted, uninvited, but inevitably there, black wings hunched over broken body and eyes, hidden by sunglasses as they are, burning dark fire; he says nothing in the time they gather, but his body says volumes.

 38. Sojourn

They take a trip to the beach one day, and Aziraphale discovers that although all of God’s creatures are good and that everyone on this wonderful earth basks in His eternal light, he really, really dislikes squid.

 39. Share

Someday Aziraphale knows that someone else will come, younger and more beautiful and filled to the brim with God’s grace, and his demon won’t be able to resist wearing him down; he never could.

40. Solitary

He’s alone, in the end, when the light fades and the stars die; he had known it would be like this, in his heart, wings stripped bare, all alone, nothing left but memories; still, he had hoped (dreamed, prayed) that he would be beside him, arms wrapped hard and eyes shut tight, with him until the end.

 41. Nowhere

It’s the days that they simply lounge around his apartment, doing nothing, saying nothing, going nowhere, that Aziraphale likes the most.

 42. Neutral

The worst thing, Aziraphale will think later, isn’t the cold metal cutting into his skin, or the warm-hot-dead air blowing at him from all directions, or that tiny little feeling in the pit of his stomach as he realizes that it’s over, the war is over and they’ve lost—it’s that Crowley’s already dead for being compromised and loving the enemy, and it’s all his fault.

 43. Nuance

It’s irritating, in a way, to see that tiny little look of surprise whenever he slips back into that first tongue from so many eons ago, because the angel knows about his past, and the angel knows that in the end, when all said and done, he’s a reptile, pure and simple, and the angel has promised he loves him anyway, but for just a half-second there’s that tiniest look of revulsion before the sunny little smile returns.

44. Near

“Come back soon,” Aziraphale calls, peering nervously after him as he makes the way to the door, and Crowley half-smiles; “I’ll be back in half a minute, don’t worry.”; it’s useless, he knows, because there’ll always be that little tiny seed of distrust, but it’s worth it to see that relieved smile when he returns.

45. Natural

“Ducks do sink like that, its nature!” he insists; Aziraphale gives him a look and rolls his eyes.

46. Horizon

They travel for nine hours to see the sunset, and in the end it’s raining, and they can barely see the horizon, and it’s cold and wet and grumpy, and later they’ll laugh and smile and it’ll be perfect.

 47. Valiant

He remembers, sometimes, the feel of that sword in his hands and the sting of the sun on his shoulders and that brilliant euphoria he realizes that it’s here, it’s beautiful, this wonderful green land so new and beautiful and fresh… and then he looks in the mirror, and he sees the saggy flesh and the tiny glasses and the fading hair and it all sort of falls apart.

48.Virtuous

He’s horrified to discover that, one day, almost unconsciously, he blessed someone.

49. Victory

He watches the new Aziraphale, with that slim body and those darkened eyes and that oh so wicked smile, and tries to convince himself it was worth it.

50. Defeat

“I love you,” he whispers, and the demon smiles, and leans in, and then it fades to black.

Meep! Some of these are positively heart wrenching! I nearly cried for a few, and they're just sentences! Very well done - I crave to know the stories behind the sentences.

But 48? 48 especially makes me giggle.

Oh, wow, thank you! Sorry if some of them were confusing-- I really like writing post-apocalypse Crowley/Aziraphale, and forget that I... need to explain things. ^^;

Strangely, I adore #45. I do.

Sorry for the lack of any backstory. Um... it works the imagination? Yeah, that's it.

If I didn't include a reference to the ducks in this fandom, I would be mobbed to death. You have to do it. *nodnod*

These are, as has been said, absolutely gorgous, some in their brutality and some because they're just that funny.

I have a couple tiny remarks, though. ^^;
In #7 (and again later on), you talk about black wings, but if I'm remembering it correctly, it's said in the book that demons have white wings just the same as angels because they used to be angels.
And in #18 (nitpicking here) I think the second "what" might have to be "want"?

Despite that, I really did love it.

Neep, you're right. I think I changed them all... Thanks so much. :)

Actually there's nowhere in the book that describes a colour for ALL angels. Metatron is gold, Beelzebub is red, and Azrael is black. Aziraphale is never given a colour.

And that's why I said "if I'm remembering it correctly".

I am fairly sure about the demons having the same colour wings as angels, though.

Oh, gosh, how wonderful. Some of these were heart-breaking, but they were all so wonderfully written! What a lovely way to start a morning. Thanks so much for sharing!

These are fantastic. You manage to say so much in so few words, skipping from moment to moment and dipping in and out of contrasting emotions expertly.

My favourite is:

Sometimes Aziraphale has to remind Crowley to breathe when humans are around, because it slips his mind whenever the angel is near.

Beautiful. ;)

I nearly cried on so many of those D: they're so heart-wrenching, and tragic but so damn *perfect* that they're beautiful.
It's lucky there's so many happy ones otherwise I'd be crying right now =]
