SVU #5: A Married Woman [Aug. 8th, 2008|10:44 am]

I started this (my first recap!) awhile ago, but couldn't get into it. Sorry if it is a little dull! I've also never posted in a community that uses tags, so it may take me a little bit to work that out. I thought I'd fill in the gap at the beginning of SVU with #5.
Basically, if you've read #4 and #6, you know what goes on this one...nothing new or exciting is revealed, and it doesn't even get interesting or relevant until the end.

title or description

The twins look kind of ugly. Although we do get the lovely Liz shoulder pat!

SVU # 54: Rush Week [Jun. 21st, 2008|03:57 pm]

Okay, so this takes place during the twins' sophomore year at SVU.  The following characters are missing and presumed offed by Crazy William (or sent to a farm to live with Tragically Dead Deaf Regina and Zombie Olivia): Isabella (Lila Lite), Bryan (who is no longer with Nina), Winston, Bruce, Danny, Alison Quinn (YAY!), Tom Watts (mentioned by name only), Mike McCallery, Steven, and Billie (perhaps they've been banished to the Land of Nod with Todd's sisterbrother?), and our poor Lila is reduced to tertiary status at best.  For the next 5 books (boo!).  If you see any of these characters, please return them to Sweet Valley IMMEDIATELY.  Bruce and Winston in particular are sorely missed.  Lila, there's a hole in my heart that can only be filled by you.  You can keep Alison, Tom, Steven, and Billie.  Replacing them are Sam (kinda like Devon only slightly less emo), Neil (Jessica's gay BFF and the only new character I approve of), Chloe (too annoying for words), and Chloe's new friend Val.  FAIL, FRANCINE.

SVU #55 - The First Time [Jun. 19th, 2008|11:04 am]

SVU #55 – The First Time

Guarding Elizabeth Wakefield’s chastity belt is a full-time job. You may already be aware that Jessica goes to drastic and unusual measures to save Elizabeth’s virginity from Sam’s clutches in the final SVU title, “Face It” (with her scheme subsequently sending a distraught Liz over to England). Now get ready to see Sam do the same thing in “The First Time”, a book with a grossly misleading title. I seriously can’t believe SVU devoted two books to the protection of Elizabeth’s v-plates (three, if you count the very first SVU title where Liz decides not to sleep with Todd). I’m surprised there isn’t a special CIA team devoted to ensuring Elizabeth’s purity …they could call it Patrons for the Retention of the Unspoilt Delicacy of Elizabeth (or PRUDE for short).

Sweet Valley High #79: The Long Lost Brother [Jun. 13th, 2008|10:59 am]

Sweet Valley High #79: The Long Lost Brother

I would like to start off by wishing the Wakefield twins a very happy birthday. If those blonde haired, blue eyed Geminis were sixteen in 1983, that means Liz is turning 41 today, and four minutes later Jess will turn 29 for the twelfth time.

So, today I will be recapping #79, The Long Lost Brother. Except he was never lost. Not even for a moment, much less a long time.

Ooooh, but look! Tim gets his very own Elizabeth Wakefield Shoulder Squeeze of Meddling Condescension! So we know this book is going to be a Very Special Episode.

*This recap is long, so I'm splitting it into two posts*

SVU THRILLER EDITION: Killer Party

I had only heard about this legendary book, but then I found a copy at my local Half Price Book store a couple of days ago and it is RIDICULOUS. So it seems I have no choice but to write a recap, the fates demand it. So here we go. NOTE: This is going to be… thorough. Sorry guys!

This book is so stupid. It's like, by this point, they weren't even trying any more.

From the back cover:

"An invitation to die for...
Jessica, Elizabeth, and all their friends at SVU have been cordially invited... to the ultimate blow-out.
An end-of-the-millennium blast.
The party to end all parties.
It's bound to be the wildest night of their lives. The kind of night when anything- make that everything- could happen.
But not everyone is going to live to ring in the new year...
Thrills. Excitement. Mystery.
Sweet Valley University."

Wow, okay. Ellipses much? Build-up much? It's just a party. Also, judging from this blurb, you would THINK that someone dies, hence the not living to ring in the new year line. You would THINK. I was so excited by this, hoping to have another Olivia Davidson. This book failed me in so many ways.

Cover:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Oooh, trippy. And not scary. Lila looks good, for a forty year old desperate to reclaim her youth by going back to school and hanging out with kids half her age. Jessica and Elizabeth look... bad. Those dresses are hideous. And Jess (I think she's in the orange) has apparently decided to style her hair like the proud chonga she is, while Liz has opted not to style hers at all.

Secrets
Secrets

Hi! This is my first recap so be gentle.
Edit: Sorry it took me so long! I got sick and then my computer broke.

I would like to say that upon reading the first 10 books of this series. I felt the need to make up a new word to describe Jessica's behavior. Here it is-"selfishosity".
Just in case you may wonder what I mean by Selfishosity-ometer.</p>

The cover features Jess and Liz. Liz is totally invading Jessica's personal bubble and staring at Jessica in a shocked, vaguely disapproving way. Jessica is looking back at Liz cattily, because she wants to throw things like pencil erasers into her sister's gaping maw.

Secrets )

I really am curious to see how this book will fare in the updated version. I'd kind of like to think high school has gone beyond a girl's reputation being her greatest asset.

SVH 132: Once Upon A Time (Chateau d' Amour Collection) [Jan. 15th, 2008|12:12 pm]

[Current Location |Work, as usual!]

Well, a SVH recap, for a change. This is the first SVH one I've done, and as it's actually a three book arc, bear with me, 'kay!

On the back, this collection is described as, 'three riveting books in one.' I don't know if I'd go that far as to say, 'riveting,'  but, OK! Also, we have the description, 'Join Jessica and Elizabeth for a summer of royalty and romance in this majestic trilogy of titles.' *Cough!* I think  Francine was fast running out of ideas here, so why not rip off a fairy tale to liven up the series, eh wot wot!

Now, these books were released separately, and then put together in the Chateau d' Amour collection afterwards. Chateau d' Amour of course translating to Chateau of Love. How romantically sickly sweet and corny can we get now, Francine! I'm making this point because this cover:

is the trilogy cover, and I will be using this in all three recaps to make them continuous. A crown, handcuffs and pretty pink flowers, and we pretty much have the books summed up on the cover.

Sweet Valley High #77: Cheating to Win

When I recapped the saga of Aaron Dallas’s rage, I was pretty disappointed that there were no steroids involved. Then I found this one! It says right on the back that some weight lifter gives track star Tony Esteban “magic vitamins” to help him run faster, and how could I pass that up?

Check it out. That’s Annie, the formerly promiscuous suicidal cheerleader. She looks like a Pentecostal homeschooler. And I guess the guy is Tony. Wasn’t he engaged to Winston’s girlfriend Maria one time, and a control freak to her?

Sweet Valley University #6; The Love of Her Life [Dec. 8th, 2007|08:25 pm]

Okay, so when I was younger I was all about the Liz/Todd OTP but as soon as SVU came along, I threw Todd under the bus for Tom Watts. That's right, L/(other)T was my OTP. I'm not proud. Especially when I learned from [info]daniellafromage's recap that Tom kinda turned out to be a dick. But whatever. I didn't read that far into the the series.

Sweet Valley University #6: The Love of Her Life

The cover shows a very toothy Elizabeth in a horrid top hugging Tom. Tom kinda reminds me of Jason from Power Rangers (Hey, I just admitted to the Liz/Tom OTP, the shame can't get much greater at making a Power Rangers reference, can it?).

The book opens with Jessica, Mike, Steven, Billie the Girl and SHOOTING! Fun! )

But the heart of the story is Elizabeth, Tom Watts, Crazy William, Crazy Celine, and the Racist Secret Society! )

Meanwhile, Todd refuses to take a hint. )

While End/Alex )and Winston also have minor sub-plots )

Sweet Valley High #49 Playing for Keeps [Oct. 31st, 2007|07:21 pm]

The best part of this book is how the whole story basically ridicules Elizabeth.

AJ Morgan is an army brat from Atlanta who just moved to Sweet Valley, capturing Jess’s heart (loins) in the process. The problem is that he likes girls that are less whorish then Jessica, and she assumes that that means he would like Liz’s personality better. She decides that to win AJ over she is going to act exactly the way (she thinks) Elizabeth would act.

SVH Super Stars: Enid's Story [Oct. 23rd, 2007|06:41 pm]

daniellafromage
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

Check it out: Sweet Valley Primary School! Would you be willing to move to South Africa in order to send your child there? Apparently the school's motto is "ad perfectum", and even though I know how it translates, I can't help but feel that it's the sort of motto that the Sweet Valley ghost-writers might have chosen, just for the way it looks.

The cover's on this page.

Am I alone in thinking that Enid looks really pretty on this cover? She's got a bit of an overbite, but she's far better-looking than either of the Wakefield twins on their covers. Her fringe is a bit crazy, I admit, and after looking at it too long I'm beginning to find her "startled doe" expression annoying, but she's got very pretty eyes and lovely skin.

Anyway. The book. I have to admit, I began recapping this with a certain amount of trepidation. Seriously, Enid's Story? Who even cares about Enid? Here is how lame Enid is: when we were fifteen, my friends and I went through a stage of assigning each other Sweet Valley characters to fit our personalities. No one, and I mean no one, wanted to be Enid. Let me spell that out for you if it isn't entirely clear: amongst a group of fifteen-year-olds pretending to be Sweet Valley characters, even Enid was too pathetic for us to bother with.

Surprisingly, the book? Better than I expected! Enid isn't a barrel of laughs but there's enough sex, drugs, and - dare I say? - rock 'n' roll to keep the most persnickety reviewer entertained.

Sweet Valley University #8: Home for Christmas [Sep. 15th, 2007|12:46 am]

I'm recapping this one because it was requested in the last post. We have a whole request thread for that purpose here. Go post if there's one you really want, and also go read it to see if you might have any of the books people are looking for!

Sweet Valley University #8: Home for Christmas

Can someone tell me who these people are supposed to be on the cover? I mean, I can tell the twins because they're on every cover. I think the two on the far left are supposed to be Bryan and Nina... except they're not really in this book. And who are these other people? Steven? Billie? Bruce? Lila? Tom? Todd? Alex? Who!? Splainy!

All I want for Christmas is a total lack of continuity and a BIG fist fight! )

Sweet Valley University #9: Sorority Scandal

I picked this one for the title. I mean, how can it not be awesome when it’s about a scandal at a sorority!? Also, the back mentions Lila. Lila and Bruce. That’s right, we find out how their relationship kinda sorta begins in this book. Like any good love story, there’s a plane crash involved!

Onward! )

Sweet Valley University #42
"Sneaking In"
aka "no continuity in the series and completely different than where book #40 was"

Sweet Valley's timeline is effing messed up. Soooo...

Jessica is dating Nick Fox, hawt cop now turned future boring student, and her life seems like it is about to get boring...or is it? Liz and Tom are back together after a long breakup where she almost flew to Denver, but Tom rushed from his revenge girlfriend's side to stop her and now they're back together. Life seems idyllic...or is it? There are drug dealers all over the place and one of Jess' friends gets hurt. And the soap-opera only continues.

A Plot )

B Plot )

Will Nick Fox live long enough to put Clay behind bards--and save Jessica from his deadly plans? Find out in my next recap, SVU #43 - The Price of Love.

Sweet Valley High #11: Too Good to be True

Because it just wouldn’t be a Sweet Valley High novel without plenty of underage drinking and an attempted rape or two. This time with psychotic New Yorkers!

In a nutshell: beautiful Suzanne Devlin, the daughter of one of Mr. Wakefield’s college roommates, comes to visit Sweet Valley from New York City. She’s totally unhinged, but she pretends to be sweet and kind and everyone loves her. So, naturally, nobody suspects that she could be making up her accusations of attempted rape. Oh, and she steals Elizabeth’s lavaliere. What a bitch. Meanwhile, Jessica goes to New York City and gets drunk and almost date raped for real.  This is a little long, because the plot was actually sort of complicated to describe.

Sweet Valley High #7: Dear Sister

I remembered this being one of my very favorite SVH books, because Jessica finally got a taste of her own medicine.  I did not remember Todd getting all stalky, Bruce having rapist tendencies, and the drinking.  All that underage drinking!

Seriously, though, these kids sure do seem to drink a lot, which never registered with me when I was eleven.

There was no B plot this time, because the A plot was so awesome that it took up the entire book.
