| SVH #138: What Jessica Wants... |
[Jul. 5th, 2008|11:41 am] |

Or, the One In Which Devon Finally Arrives at SVH. I used to be a Devon fan, but having re-read this, I found him highly irritating. I still think his character does a U-turn from Earthquake onwards, but that doesn’t stop him being manipulative and plain stalkerish in this book. Both Jessica and Elizabeth also showcase the most annoying sides of their personalities here. In fact, the person who comes out best (while being the most badly treated) is… Todd! |

So, this is my first recap so be gentle, readers! I apologize in advance if it doesn’t live up to the standards set forth by those who’ve come before me!
Okay, enough of the disclaimer…on with the snark!
Actually, the biggest thing to snark on is how this is SVH’s second junior prom. We all remember what happened last time, but one else in Sweet Valley does and I found myself yelling at the characters to remember the magical vodka and poor, dead Sam Woodruff. |

| Elizabeth is such a B***h. Part 2 |
[Apr. 19th, 2008|03:30 am] |
Elizabeth's Secret Diary Volume 3 The story continues. I used to like Elizabeth when I was younger. Then I read this and realized she is worse than Jessica. She is a two faced lying cheater. Ok it's 3:30 am and I am off to bed. Enjoy. |

| SVT #114: The Boyfriend Mess |
[Feb. 14th, 2008|12:04 am] |
It's just clicked over to Valentine's Day in New Zealand. Ugh. I do have a Valentine. My friend in Christchurch sent me love via MSN. How thrilling. Thanks, Adam!
Okay, this is the second book in the two-part SVT Valentine's arc.
All the couples go to Dizzy Planet. Sophia and Elizabeth follow. So-called hilarity ensued.
Just kidding. The longer and sincerely more ridiculous recap is under the cut.

( It says 'bee', and there's a picture of a bee on it! ) |

| Sweet Valley Twins #113: The Boyfriend Game |
[Feb. 7th, 2008|03:14 pm] |
Okay, in honour of Valentine's Day (a day in which so-called romantic deeds are done by men involuntarily to make shallow women happy), I shall recap the two-book SVT arc that is in honour of this important day. Gag.

| Sweet Valley High #54: Two-Boy Weekend |
[Jan. 5th, 2008|01:08 pm] |
Sweet Valley High #54: Two-Boy Weekend
While this title could probably apply to either twin on any given weekend, it’s Jessica who cheats on her boyfriend this time. Also, this book is about stalking. A very serious issue, to be sure. Shall we see how Sweet Valley High butchers it? Let’s read.

| Sweet Valley High #113 – The Pom-Pom Wars or, The Most Quote-filled Recap I Have Ever Done |
[Dec. 11th, 2007|11:01 pm] |
Sorry for taking so long to do the second book in this miniseries!
Hehe, I’d like to note that on my particular copy of this book, I scratched beards and mustaches onto the Jessica and Elizabeth above the ‘Sweet Valley High’ lettering. =) In my recap of ‘Jessica Quits the Squad’, I posed these questions at the end: Will Liz find Jess' tear stains on her sheets? Will Annie and Heather have a lesbian fling? Will Jessica start her own cheerleading squad and take them to regionals?

| Jessica's Secret Diary volume 1 part 1 |
[Dec. 3rd, 2007|01:15 pm] |
This volume covers the time from SVH #32, The New Jessica all the way to #40 On The Edge. In this thrilling instalment of Jessica’s life, she becomes slightly fixated on Elizabeth, making her actions ever more harsh and sociopathic, leading to a drastic makeover, numerous attempts at stealing Elizabeth’s boyfriend, one feigned terminal illness and a variety of misfits having problems that are never mentioned again. And finally, Heroically Deaf Regina becomes Tragically Dead Regina. Jessica sort of cares. I've had to break this up into two parts, because LiveJournal got all pissy. Get ready to be underwhelmed!

| Sweet Valley High #62: Who's Who? |
[Dec. 2nd, 2007|11:21 pm] |
Okay. I'm not ashamed. I love this book. I love it so much that I spent five dollars on a renaming token for my LiveJournal so that I could use the name of one of the "characters" in it. (My real name is neither Daniella nor Fromage. Don't be too shocked now. I know pseudonyms aren't too common on the internet, but that's just how I roll.) I don't even known why I love it. It's not the plot so much as the fabulous details. And they really are FABULOUS.
The cover is stunningly fug. That's Liz on the left in the role of Daniella Fromage (and of course, I always wear trendy baggy blazers and black berets, and am totally not sitting here right now in faded pyjamas with my hair covered in cereal), and Jessica on the right being Magenta Galaxy. Based on their expressions, I want to smack them both.

| Sweet Valley Twins #9, Against the Rules |
[Nov. 8th, 2007|12:08 pm] |
Where Jessica is a huge witch-with-a-b, and Elizabeth is saintlier than ever. A cover image is available here. That girl gazing at the cake with a "For me?" look is Poor Sophia Rizzo. St. Elizabeth is on Sophia's left, arm around her shoulder. I guess the other girl is Amy. She looks bored.
Sophia is very sweet and gentle in this book. Didn't she become kind of prickly later on (like Rocky in the Bad News Ballet series? Or do I just think that because they have similar hair?)
Anyway...
( sometimes being a kid is the toughest job of all... )

| SVT #67 Jessica The Thief |
[Nov. 5th, 2007|07:16 pm] |

| SVT #64 The Charm School Mystery |
[Nov. 2nd, 2007|08:58 pm] |
If you're a con artist and you're looking for an easy mark, where do you go? New York? Please. Too streetwise. Orange County? You might meet Marissa. Sweet Valley? Oh yes. It's full of rich naive people.
How do you do this - a pyramid scheme? Charity? No - you decide to open a charm school, only to be foiled by a group of meddling kids.

| SVH #86: Jessica Against Bruce |
[Nov. 1st, 2007|03:29 am] |
This is up later than I said that it would be. Sorry! I've been busy with uni work all day. You know some days when you wake up and all you want to do is build a time machine, travel back in time, and murder each and every critic who has ever written anything about Hobbes' theory of laughter in the most horrible way possible? TODAY WAS ONE OF THOSE DAYS.
In my recap of The Middle School Gets Married, I suggested that the ghost-writer was writing Bruce as though he were Danny from Grease. To my horror, I see that the cover artist for SVH apparently read that book, loved it, agreed with Bruce's characterisation whole-heartedly, and decided to take the idea and run with it when drawing the cover for Jessica Against Bruce. Just look at it. Bruce looks like he's about to burst into the chorus of Summer Lovin'. (Jessica, appropriately, looks like Sandy post-makeover.) ( Read on! ) |

| Sweet Valley Kids #12: Sweet Valley Trick Or Treat |
[Oct. 28th, 2007|12:59 am] |
I was trying to do all the Sweet Valley Kids books in order, but I have to jump ahead to book #12. Not because three through eleven are too painful to recap (they probably are), but because #12 is the first of three Halloween-themed SVK books.
Yes, I said first of three. Books twelve, twenty-three, and thirty-three are all books about Halloween. In all three books, the twins are seven years old.
In the same second grade class.
With the same teacher.
With the same classmates.
So, either the twins and all their classmates failed second grade three times in a row or everyone in Sweet Valley suffers from amnesia and celebrates Halloween three times every year.
Oh, and I should also point out that somewhere between book two and book twelve, the twins have graduated from first grade to second grade… with the same class… and the same teacher… and the same class hamster. Way to pay attention, ghostwriter!
But more on that stuff later. Right now, let’s stick with Sweet Valley Kids #12: Sweet Valley Trick or Treat.

| SVH #130, Model Flirt |
[Sep. 28th, 2007|12:39 am] |
I notice nanamik622 has already done a recap of Cover Girls, the first book in this miniseries. But since she mentions in it “I do hope that someone owns #130”, I’m asssuming she won’t mind me finishing the series’ recap. This is my premiere post in 1bruce1, so I apologize in advance if it’s not up to this blog’s usual fantabulous standards. Feel free to give me feedback. Too long? Not snarky enough? Let me know. I just had to have a try because it recently dawned on me that, having read most of Sweet Valley High and being an avid collector of almost every Sweet Valley series, I am a perfect candidate to recap books. Or maybe I’ll be a crap candidate...but fuck it. (Or as a Sweet Valley native would say…fudge it? Place it gently where the sun don’t shine? Their euphemisms for swears are truly entertaining.) This miniseries was one of my favourites as a kid....oh, alright. As a teenager. First, I must dissect the front cover.
