Sweet Valley University #33: Out of the Picture

So after three books of jerking the reader around with random beach shenanigans in SVU 30-32, SVU finally returns to the main plotline for this book. As you may recall, Todd's girlfriend Gin just died.

Sweet Valley University #29: One Last Kiss

For those of you who don't read my personal journal: a few days ago I ordered a Sweet Valley book had had it rush delivered to my apartment. Why? Because it was an emergency, that's why. A fucking Sweet Valley emergency. I had never read this far into SVU and when I heard about this plot, I needed the book.

If you (like me) didn't read this far, you should go read [info]daniellafromage's recap of SVU #27: Elizabeth and Todd Forever. That'll get you mostly caught up since there's only one book between these two. Basically: Todd got back with Liz even though he was dating someone else. Whoops!

As we know from the fate of Regina Morrow, once your boyfriend starts kissing someone else it's time for you to die.

I SAID DIE ALREADY! )

Sweet Valley University #30: Beauty and the Beach [May. 16th, 2008|11:30 pm]

Sweet Valley University #30: Beauty and the Beach

This is the first book in the second “Lifeguards” series of SVU. If you had asked me a week ago if there was such a mini-series, I would've told you that you were high. No one would be stupid enough to put their life in Jessica and Elizabeth's hands once, let alone on two separate occasions. Those girls have killers shadowing their every move! But here we have it. SVU: Lifeguards. I looked at the cover and thought it was a Baywatch rip-off. My sister saw the cover and commented that it was like that time the characters on Saved By the Bell became lifeguards. In any case, it's a rip-off of someone, but I'll let you pick.

Luckily for me, the first part of the first “Lifeguards” mini-series has been recapped already by [info]julieannie here. What's weird to me is that book was about 10 books previous to this one, and now it's the next summer. It took 100+ books to cover one year in Sweet Valley High but only ten to over a year in SVU. This is not the SV time warp I know and love. Frankly, I'm a little insulted that the editors decided to do SVU in something closer to real time. I don't like realism in my Sweet Valley.

From left to right we have: Theo, Elizabeth (maybe Jessica?), Ryan (Ben?), Jessica (Elizabeth?), Ben (Ryan?), Miranda and Priya

No Nina or Winston even though they're the only series regulars to appear in this book along with the twins. Discrimination!!

Team Sweet Valley #1: Jessica Goes for the Gold

Because I'm a big dork, I made a list of every Sweet Valley book ever written, and then noted if it had been recapped here or not. This was the only series (even though there's only two books) that had no recaps. That made me sad. So I quickly went and purchased this one on ebay. I'm very excited about it. I was a gymnast when I was little. (Although I had an irrational fear of flipping over backwards, so I was never any good—except at the balance beam when all I had to do was kick and leap.)

The back of the book tells us that “Jessica's always known she's a super athlete.” (What?!?) “And now that she's earned a place on the school's gymnastics team, she's ready to prove her acrobatic skills to the whole state.” (What?!? She's on the team for the first year and she's already going to States? That's ridiculous. People do gymnastics for years and years and never get to go to a State Championship, like, say, me.) Then it also tells us that there's a mean girl named Dawn trying to sabotage Jessica. “Jessica wanted a fair competition,” it says, to which I call shenanigans. Jessica never wants a fair competition. Not my sociopathic Jessica. I haven't even started this book and it already makes no sense. Awesome!

The copyright year tells me this book came out in 1996. Just in time for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics where we first got to hear the dulcet tones of Kerri Strug's voice. Is it wrong of me to hope that Jessica hits her head on the beam or something?

Coincidentally, there is an article in Salon today about what being an elite gymnast is really like. Go read it then come back here and compare real world to Sweet Valley world.

Just a reminder, the tote bag contest ends the 20th. So you guys still have a few days to get entries in. And we have 17 tote bags to give away so there's a good chance you will win!

Also, I wanted to announce that I got my hands on another brand-new book by Francine Pascal called The Ruling Class. It's going to go to the person with the highest score--the big winner--because you rule.

Happy New Edition Release Day, Everyone! I hope everyone in the US rushed right out to buy the new editions today. Irina and I have some fun stuff (I think) in the works so stay tuned.

Anyway, some responses to my previous post got me wondering. We now have about 700 readers of this community. I was wondering if there are any jokes, acronyms or sayings we often use that you don't understand? Or didn't at first? I'm thinking of writing a Frequently Asked Questions.

Like, "What does TBT stand for?" "When did the "Ultimate Pool Push" occur?" "Why do you think Mr. Collins is nasty?" (although that last one should be obvious).

Tag! You're It! [Apr. 7th, 2008|12:16 pm]

[Tags|, , ]

Hey all, it's Mod #2 here. As you may have noticed from my previous posts, I'm obsessive compulsive about the tags. And since we've gotten lots of new people, I thought I'd run through the tags quickly so everyone knows how to do it. (You do not have to be the poster of a recap to tag it, so everyone can pitch in to keep the tags neat and tidy.)

All our tags can be found here.

Ideally, when you click a tag it will take you to a bunch of related recaps. There are some tags which are pretty much standard for each post:

1. Tag it with your name. That way if people like your recap they can find others by you. For example, my tag is strangerface.
2. Tag the series name. The most used tag is Sweet Valley High but Sweet Valley Twins is also popular. Please note some of the titles are trickier than that, for example SVU books are tagged with SVU not "Sweet Valley University." When tagging, please post first and then select the "edit tags" option to select tags already in use instead of creating new tags by mistake. (Any post without a recap gets the Non-book recap tag. Please note the hyphen!)

Other things to keep an eye out for when reading )

ETA: And finally a question: I was going through and cleaning up the tags. I noticed some tags with character names that didn't have sur names (Ex, Anna, Salvador, etc). I know these are Jr. High characters and even though I've read some of those books I can't for the life of me remember what their last names are. I'd like to add them to keep parallel structure.

Sweet Valley Kids Super Snooper #2: The Case of the Magic Christmas Bell

We've had super stars, super editions, super thrillers, super chillers before. But only Sweet Valley Kids brings us the “Super Snooper.” That phrase, by the way, is never not funny. Super Snooper. Super Snooper. Super Snooper. Super Snooper. Super Snooper. Super Snooper. Super Snooper. See? Still funny. That Francine is a comic genius.

FYI, if you type “super snooper” into Yahoo it asks you if you meant “super sniper” which is what you're going to need to put the poor souls who ever read this out of their misery.

You can see the cover here. I'm sad it's so small, because Karl the Elf looks almost exactly like Liz and Jessica, except a little smaller. It's creepy.

Poll [Apr. 1st, 2008|12:32 pm]

strangerface
[Tags|, , ]

There has been some discussion of people recapping the "Caitlin" series of books on this community. The moderators do not want this community to become a free for all, where you can just recap any YA book you think is funny. But we may be open to the idea of allowing recaps of other books by Francine Pascal. This would include Caitlin, Fearless, Fearless: FBI, The Ruling Class and all of the other bazillion books she has put her name on over the years. However, we're mindful of the fact that many of the members might not be familiar with these books and not care to see recaps of them--just Sweet Valley titles.

Thus, we're conducting a poll.

Poll #1164128 Other Books
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All

Should we open the community up to other books?

View Answers

Yeah! You guys don't know what you're missing, those other books were just as hilarious!
45 (24.1%)

No, I don't know these people! I just want to read about Sweet Valley crazies.
115 (61.5%)

I have no preference.
27 (14.4%)

Please note that there are many SV titles still unclaimed in the request thread. It is not like we need more books to recap. But if the masses demand snark, [info]1bruce1 will give it to you!

ETA: Polling closed. Motion not carried. No recaps of anything that doesn't have "Sweet Valley" in the title somewhere. We may revist the idea of recapping the "Caitlin" series when all the SV books are recapped but we still have a LONG way to go before that.

Forgive my spamming, but there's more news about the new editions in Publishers Weekly.

Sweet Valley High: Back in Session
By Sally Lodge, Children's Bookshelf -- Publishers Weekly, 3/27/2008

In 1983, Bantam published the first of Francine Pascal’s Sweet Valley High novels, starring a pair of twins: sweet, studious Elizabeth and scheming, snobby Jessica. The good twin/bad twin dynamic proved very popular: sales of the 156 novels in the series reached 60 million copies, and SVH inspired a handful of successful spinoff series. Now Random House Children’s Books is introducing these teenage twins to a new generation of readers, reissuing updated mass market editions of the first 12 installments of the series under its Laurel-Leaf imprint. Featuring new, photographic covers, the inaugural releases, Double Love and Secrets, are due in April with a combined first printing of 100,000 copies. Two additional titles will follow in August.

The decision to bring the series back into print 25 years after its first appearance was based on a combination of factors, according to Beverly Horowitz, v-p and publisher of Bantam Delacorte Dell Books for Young Readers. “Even though decades have passed, we realized that these books haven’t lost their meaning,” she says. “Girls today are still drawn to stories about the bad girl and the good girl, sister relationships, friendships, family and high school life. And has any of those things changed much? I don’t think so. This series was one of the first to deal with issues and emotions realistically, and readers in the 1980s really connected with these characters. I think they, and the original plot lines, have withstood the test of time.”

What had not aged as well were the teens’ methods of communication. With the exception of some fashion tweaks (“a peach skirt may have changed its color,” notes Horowitz), the only significant changes to the existing texts—made by in-house editors—were updates in technology, with added references to cell phones, text messaging and IM-ing. Horowitz puts the communication revolution in perspective: “Back when the books first came out, if a rumor was circulating around school, kids would get a phone call about it after they returned home in the afternoon. Now, if news breaks, they text-message each other immediately and 40 people know about it before the end of class.”

Horowitz relays an incident that she feels validated the SVH reissue program. On a whim, she sent out an “open call” e-mail inviting Random House employees to eat pizza and share their memories of reading the original series. “The response was incredible,” she recalls. “We had 45 people show up and others responded that they were so sorry they couldn’t make it. Ten and 15 years after first reading these novels they had distinct memories of the plot twists and characters and they said that it wasn’t just a nostalgia thing, but that they felt that kids today will still relate to the stories.” And when author Pascal made a surprise guest appearance at the gathering, “It was as though a rock star had entered the room,” Horowitz says.

The publisher’s marketing campaign aims to reach both nostalgia-driven and first-time SVH readers. To catch the attention of the series’ original fans, postcards will be distributed to bars and restaurants in 10 cities. Ads will appear on posters in six cities in May and on lifeguard towers and telephone kiosks in beach areas during the summer. A dedicated Web site, SweetValley.com, will launch in April, and RHCB has created tote bags touting the series.

At Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville, Ill., owner Becky Anderson has the first SVH releases on order and expects that they will sell. “If they can update Nancy Drew, why not update the twins?” she says. “With the books’ high school connection and the popularity now of High School Musical, I think they will work.”

I will give my first born to anyone who can snag me a tote bag.

Sweet Valley Twins #69: Won't Someone Help Anna? [Mar. 27th, 2008|08:00 pm]

This is a wonderful day here at [info]1bruce1, I gotta say. This community is such a bright spot in my existence. I'm proud to be co-moderator. (And don't make me feel otherwise, newbies, or I'll Todd Punch you. Don't think I won't.)

This one was requested in the request thread. I was in the middle of recapping Sweet Valley Kids Super Snooper #2 (I only mention this because I love the phrase “Super Snooper,” as you shall see in that recap) when this one arrived in the mail. I immediately dropped everything because this one has secret deaf parents. Which is, of course, awesome. In order accomplish this, you must realize that means Sweet Valley Middle never ever conducts parent-teacher conferences or has a PTA. Nor do Cammi’s parents ever go near/speak to/interact with their neighbors. Oh, Sweet Valley, not only do the parents and teachers neglect their kids, they neglect everyone. Way to go!

Sweet Valley Twins #88: Steven Gets Even

I did a pool in my LJ about which book I should recap next. This one won, but I misrepresented it. I thought it was Halloween themed but it's not really. I think this book should go down in history as the one time the ghostwriters didn't reuse a holiday when they could've.

Is that Steven looking like an idiot all rolled up in toilet paper? The twins are probably thinking “Wow, way to get even. You sure got us, Steven.”

Sweet Valley Kids #34: The Best Thanksgiving Ever [Feb. 17th, 2008|08:09 pm]

Sweet Valley Kids #34: The Best Thanksgiving Ever

I was going to save this one until November. But then I realized—fuck—it's only February and the chances were I'd forget by then. So I'll just recap this now and you can all make a note to yourself to come back at read it in November. Deal?

I can't find a picture of the cover. On it, one of the twins is holding a turkey with oven mitts. My mom won't let me carry the turkey now. She tells me I'll drop it. (And she's right; I'm not to be trusted in the kitchen.) Alice doesn't have the same worries, obviously. She treats the kids like servants and tells them to fetch the heavy items for her.

There are no readers of the month in this book. Random House must have wised up to how cruel and unusual that was.

Sweet Valley Kids #18: Bossy Steven

I never read the Sweet Valley Kids series. I was too lofty for them, even when I was young. This is my first, I think.

I feel badly for the kids listed as “Readers of the Month” in these. This month it's two girls named Elizabeth and Jessica Dye from Pennsylvania. See? They share names with the twins. I bet they thought this was awesome at the time. Now, probably not so much because now the world can see their very unfortunate haircuts.

That photo isn't very clear so I won't comment on the twins' jeans. But I do wonder why Steven is not taller than the twins. Isn't he like three years older than them? As a height-challenged person myself, I'm not fond of commenting on people's sizes but, um, Ned and Alice might want to take him to a doctor.

The twins have to clean Steven's room for one whole week! )

Cutting Recaps [Feb. 6th, 2008|11:20 am]

strangerface
[Tags|, ]

Hey, everyone. I'm putting the mod hat on.

[info]irinaauthor and I have been talking about instituting some sort of rule about when it's okay to cut a recap in half. It's easier for us if you post a recap for a book in one post, not multiple entries, so we'd like it if you just saved what you've written until the entire book is finished.

However, we realize that if the recap is very long, it's might be easier for readers if it's broken up.

So we were thinking something like you have to have recapped 200 pages of the book or 10 pages of text in your word processor before cutting the recap in two. I think for the most part this only applies to magna/super editions or SVU.

What do you guys think? Is this acceptable?

ETA: Okay. It seems we are all in agreement. Make your best efforts not to split up your posts. And if you must, you should post them one after another--not with days or weeks in between.

Also, please note this rule is just for recaps done after the date stamp on this post. Previous recaps do not have to be deleted or combined. Thanks!

Sweet Valley High #31: Taking Sides [Feb. 2nd, 2008|12:08 am]

Wee. I'm so excited. I orders Taking Sides online and it came today. It's all pretty and new looking. All my old Sweet Valley novels have the spines broken and yellowed pages. This one looks like its never been opened. I'm gonna crack it though because that's how much I love you, [info]1bruce1.

Anyway, I can't find a good picture of the cover online. Found! On it Liz and Jessica are supposed to be glaring at each other, but it looks more like they're having a staring contest. I think Jessica is going to blink first because Liz is wearing a shirt that matches her barrettes and that would freak anyone out. At least it always freaks me out when she does it. When I see those barrettes coming, I head for the hills, people.

Can Elizabeth outsmart Jessica in the hottest feud ever? (dirty!) )

I am so excited! I was bemoaning the fact that I was all out of Sweet Valley books to recap, and then (miraculously) I remembered that I still had this one somewhere. It was (inexplicably) hidden under my bookcase. I had to look for it for a good two minutes; it was a trying time, but I persevered through all that hardship.

This is Perfect Shot. Those people on the cover are female basketball star Shelley Novak and photographer Jim Roberts. Jim looks like he has plastic-Ken-doll hair. But Shelley! Look at those eyes! If she were on America's Next Top Model, Tyra would tell her she was “fierce!” (PS. I'm so happy that this recap will allow me to indulge my two cheesy loves of Sweet Valley High and America's Next Top Model.)
