When we had this poll about what is okay and not okay to post, iriniaauthor and I didn't set any hard rules about it.
Apprently, this was unclear to some members. I'm sorry.
Please only post recaps, funny SV-related things (ex. "If There's a Fuck Up, Call Todd"), news, etc.
Please do not post random observations that are only tangentially related to Sweet Valley. If you are unsure if a post is okay or not, feel free to send a message to myself or Irina.
It never hurts to ask!

| Weird Comments |
[Jul. 17th, 2008|09:39 am] |
FYI, we're having a bit of an issue with spam bots posting completely random non-sensical comments in response to posts. I'm not sure what the purpose of this is, other than to drive me insane. I've blocked and deleted a lot of the comments, but we may end up screening comments or only allowing members to post comments if this continues. |

| STICKY: Recaps in the Oven |
[Jun. 11th, 2020|04:48 pm] |
Please comment with the titles of Sweet Valley books you are currently recapping. Then delete the comment when it is finished, so we'll know which books are in the works.
Please note: Two people can be working on the same book at the same time. This is just so people know what's in the pipeline.
ETA: I've been going through and deleting the comments if the recap has been posted but try to remember to do it yourself. I want to try to keep this thread as small as possible so if people are looking, they don't get confused! |

| STICKY: Sweet Valley Swap |
[Jun. 11th, 2020|04:47 pm] |
Because so many people requested it in the previous post, I'm now starting a thread for people who want to buy, sell or swap Sweet Valley books. People looking for books to recap (or just complete their collection) please use this thread. |

irinaauthor and I are trying to narrow the focus of 1bruce1, as the group gets larger. We think limiting the community to just recaps is a bit harsh (we'd miss out on Mr. Collins If You're Nasty diaries if that were the case) but some recent posts have kind of bugged us.
So far, the only rule we could come up with is "Irina and Em have to think your post is funny and/or interesting, or else."
That's a bit vague, so I wanted to get the community's imput on what kind of posts you like to see here.

ETA: Maybe I did this the wrong way. Maybe I should've asked what you dislike seeing. Is there something that particularly annoys you? Please comment. I don't want people leaving the community because of these types of things. |

At the request of sundancekid, I have changed all the LJ user tags to say "recapper: [recapper's name]. (Ex. recapper: strangerface) This way all the name tags are in the same general area and it's easier to tell them apart from the other tags.
It took a long time. And some of my keys are sticking. Please let me know if I have accidentally spelled your name wrong in the switchover. I even had a typo in my own, so it's not personal. |

| Totes! |
[Apr. 16th, 2008|10:22 am] |
Just a reminder, the tote bag contest ends the 20th. So you guys still have a few days to get entries in. And we have 17 tote bags to give away so there's a good chance you will win!
Also, I wanted to announce that I got my hands on another brand-new book by Francine Pascal called The Ruling Class. It's going to go to the person with the highest score--the big winner--because you rule. |

| TOTE BAG CONTEST |
[Apr. 9th, 2008|06:37 pm] |
In honor of the Sweet Valley High rerelease, strangerface and I have an exciting announcement! Random House has sent us SWEET VALLEY TOTE BAGS. That's right. Those tote bags. And we didn't even have to give up our firstborn children. Check it:
Ooooh, pretty!
We have seventeen of these to give away, so we're announcing the first ever 1BRUCE1 TOTE BAG CONTEST.
A note, first: Em and I are not rich. It's weird, but running a Sweet Valley snark community isn't anywhere near as lucrative as you'd think. So, if you enter the contest and win a tote bag, please be willing to pay for shipping. And now, on to the good part.
The contest is simply this: Write your own reader of the month essay! You know the ones we mean: they're in the backs of the books, and they're hilarious. Em and I will score them and announce the winners.
Here's what we'll be looking for:
1. Embarrassing anecdote from real life (ranked on a 1-5 scale of humiliation) 2. Gushy love for Sweet Valley (ranked on a 1-5 scale of effusion) 3. Explain how Sweet Valley books have made you a better person (ranked 1-5 on a scale of depravity) 4. Tie in a moral (ranked 1-5 on the scale of bizarreness) 5. Make us laugh (ranked 1-5 depending on how hard) 6. Use specific Sweet Valley plot points and characters to support your thesis (ranked 1-5 on a scale of applicability. May award a bonus two points for especially well chosen or obscure examples)
And the bonus categories!
7. Bonus two points for a mention of Crazy Margo, Crazy Nora, or William White 8. Bonus two points if you take a stand on the Todd vs. Jeffrey vs. Tom debate 9. Bonus one point if you include an embarrassing preteen photo of yourself, just like the real reader of the month essays
For those of you keeping score at home, that adds up 30 points, plus 7 possible extra credit, for a grand total of 37 points.
If you decide to enter, run your essay through spell and grammar check, post it behind a cut, and tag it "totebag contest." Any community members can enter. Try to cap out at 500 words, though we won't flip out if it's a little longer. We'll read them all, score them on our rubric, and let you all know who won. The contest deadline is April 20.
Let the games begin! |

Happy New Edition Release Day, Everyone! I hope everyone in the US rushed right out to buy the new editions today. Irina and I have some fun stuff (I think) in the works so stay tuned.
Anyway, some responses to my previous post got me wondering. We now have about 700 readers of this community. I was wondering if there are any jokes, acronyms or sayings we often use that you don't understand? Or didn't at first? I'm thinking of writing a Frequently Asked Questions.
Like, "What does TBT stand for?" "When did the "Ultimate Pool Push" occur?" "Why do you think Mr. Collins is nasty?" (although that last one should be obvious). |

| Tag! You're It! |
[Apr. 7th, 2008|12:16 pm] |
Hey all, it's Mod #2 here. As you may have noticed from my previous posts, I'm obsessive compulsive about the tags. And since we've gotten lots of new people, I thought I'd run through the tags quickly so everyone knows how to do it. (You do not have to be the poster of a recap to tag it, so everyone can pitch in to keep the tags neat and tidy.)
All our tags can be found here.
Ideally, when you click a tag it will take you to a bunch of related recaps. There are some tags which are pretty much standard for each post:
1. Tag it with your name. That way if people like your recap they can find others by you. For example, my tag is strangerface. 2. Tag the series name. The most used tag is Sweet Valley High but Sweet Valley Twins is also popular. Please note some of the titles are trickier than that, for example SVU books are tagged with SVU not "Sweet Valley University." When tagging, please post first and then select the "edit tags" option to select tags already in use instead of creating new tags by mistake. (Any post without a recap gets the Non-book recap tag. Please note the hyphen!)
( Other things to keep an eye out for when reading )
ETA: And finally a question: I was going through and cleaning up the tags. I noticed some tags with character names that didn't have sur names (Ex, Anna, Salvador, etc). I know these are Jr. High characters and even though I've read some of those books I can't for the life of me remember what their last names are. I'd like to add them to keep parallel structure. |

| Poll |
[Apr. 1st, 2008|12:32 pm] |
There has been some discussion of people recapping the "Caitlin" series of books on this community. The moderators do not want this community to become a free for all, where you can just recap any YA book you think is funny. But we may be open to the idea of allowing recaps of other books by Francine Pascal. This would include Caitlin, Fearless, Fearless: FBI, The Ruling Class and all of the other bazillion books she has put her name on over the years. However, we're mindful of the fact that many of the members might not be familiar with these books and not care to see recaps of them--just Sweet Valley titles.
Thus, we're conducting a poll.
Poll #1164128 Other Books
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: AllShould we open the community up to other books?
Please note that there are many SV titles still unclaimed in the request thread. It is not like we need more books to recap. But if the masses demand snark, 1bruce1 will give it to you!
ETA: Polling closed. Motion not carried. No recaps of anything that doesn't have "Sweet Valley" in the title somewhere. We may revist the idea of recapping the "Caitlin" series when all the SV books are recapped but we still have a LONG way to go before that. |

A tremendous day in the world of bitchy Sweet Valley recaps: 1bruce1 has just broken 500 members! (Watched by 572!) Hello, everyone!
strangerface and I are dying to know, how did you find this community? Especially the folks who signed up today - just this afternoon, we got over 20 registrations. It's a record.
A note to the new people: all members can make and reply to posts, so jump in anytime. All we ask, beyond the normal spelling and grammar check, is that you not split a recap into multiple posts unless it's a super edition book.
You can always see a running list of which books have been recapped on our profile page, if you'd like to read the recaps in number order. Also, we have a request post where you can ask for books you'd like to see written up. The request post is also linked from the profile page, to keep things easy to find. If you have a bunch of Sweet Valley books and can't decide which one to recap, the request post could help you narrow it down. It's completely okay if we have more than one recap of a book. We all know there's more than enough mockable material to go around. |

| Cutting Recaps |
[Feb. 6th, 2008|11:20 am] |
Hey, everyone. I'm putting the mod hat on.
irinaauthor and I have been talking about instituting some sort of rule about when it's okay to cut a recap in half. It's easier for us if you post a recap for a book in one post, not multiple entries, so we'd like it if you just saved what you've written until the entire book is finished.
However, we realize that if the recap is very long, it's might be easier for readers if it's broken up.
So we were thinking something like you have to have recapped 200 pages of the book or 10 pages of text in your word processor before cutting the recap in two. I think for the most part this only applies to magna/super editions or SVU.
What do you guys think? Is this acceptable?
ETA: Okay. It seems we are all in agreement. Make your best efforts not to split up your posts. And if you must, you should post them one after another--not with days or weeks in between.
Also, please note this rule is just for recaps done after the date stamp on this post. Previous recaps do not have to be deleted or combined. Thanks! |

| A request for help |
[Dec. 7th, 2007|10:15 am] |
Hi all,
I was working on the profile page, and I think some of my SVH Super Edition and Super Thriller numbers are messed up. I did the best I could with google, but if anyone could help me out by listing in comments to this post the Super Edition and Super Thriller titles, in order, with numbers, I'd really appreciate it.
I want to make sure the profile page is correct, and it gets tricky when some Super Editions are also numbered books, like A Deadly Christmas, which I think is a Super Thriller (though I'm not sure which number) along with being book #111.
Thanks! |

A bunch of new members have joined in the last few days, so I just wanted to say welcome to 1bruce1! Thanks for joining up, and thanks as well to everyone who's written recaps and comments. You guys are laugh-out-loud funny.
Remember you can always see a running list of which books have been recapped on our profile page, if you'd like to read the recaps in number order. Also, we have a request post where you can ask for books you'd like to see written up. If you have a bunch of Sweet Valley books (or find your old stash when you go home for Thanksgiving next week) and can't decide which one to recap, the request post could help you narrow it down. It's completely okay if we have more than one recap of a book. We all know there's more than enough mockable material to go around.
I had a great time with the Halloween Theme Week we did last month, so I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing a similar thing for the holidays coming up. US Thanksgiving is next week. Are there any Sweet Valley Thanksgiving books besides Sisters at War, which _ocelott_ hilariously recapped last month? If there are, and you own one, now would be the perfect time to jump in!
But after Thanksgiving is done, all the stores will be decked out in Christmas stuff, if they aren't already. If you have any Christmas Sweet Valley books, November 23-December 25 would be the perfect time to recap them. (Though I'm not holding off on The Evil Twin that long, but sundancekid and I might post our Return of the Evil Twin co-recap sometime in there.) Anyway, just as before, non-holiday recaps are welcome too, but if you're having trouble picking a book, consider one that takes place during Christmas! |

| I hate to be a bitch |
[Oct. 27th, 2007|08:48 pm] |
Can we as a group get together and discuss the tags? We've made several tags with character names ("Jessica Wakefield," "Enid 'Alex' Rollins," etc). I would like to request that people refrain from tagging entries with these particular tags unless the book in question features them significantly. I say this because I don't want everything tagged with "jessica wakefield" and "elizabeth wakefield" (in fact, I'd like to leave it open to the group if we should do away with these two entirely.) If a character only appears in passing or is not central to the plot, don't tag an entry with their name.
Also, please don't create redundant tags. We don't need a "SVT" tag because we already have a "Sweet Valley Twins" tag. Thanks. |

[Oct. 20th, 2007|09:27 pm] |
Hi, all. At the request of alphabet26 I went and created some tags for our entries. It'll help people find things easier. I've tagged almost every entry (I think) with the series it's a part of any anything else I could think of. But I could really use your help. Obviously, the people who know the books best are the people who read and recapped them. So if any book you recapped has any of the following, please tag it:
pool push - Genuine pool pushing (no oceans, fountains or other bodies of water, please) attempted rape (fake) - our favorite kind of attempted rape attempted rape (real) - like John (boo!) connor iz drunk - Stories about Connor's alcoholism tricia martin (or look-a-likes) - I know I'm missing some of the look-a-likes! major continuity errors - I think we'll have to restrain ourselves with this tag. Every book as *some*continuity error, but for this I'm talking like, people rising from the grave or characters losing their sisterbrother.
Also, if anyone else has good ideas for tags, go ahead and make 'em. Or click here to see the tags already in use. |
