SVTwins #15: The Older Boy
Sweet Valley Twins #15, The Older Boy
Jess starts seeing Josh, a sixteen-year-old junior at SVH, by convincing him she’s a fourteen-year-old freshman. How does she convince him she’s older, you may ask? With tricks such as this:
“I’m really glad we met,” she told him, letting her fingers rest lightly on the stick shift between them. ewww.
They double with Josh’s best friend Sam and his freshman girlfriend Melanie – who have FAKE ID’s. This must be how all the under-aged drinking in SVH is justified; they’ve had practice lying about their age for years! I ask you, is it really worth getting a fake just to get into rated-R movies?
Elizabeth figures out about Jessica’s situation when Josh mistakes her for Jess and flirts with her at the mall. I love that she’s simultaneously confused by this stranger talking to her and disarmed by his hotness. Nice. Also, Caroline Pearce spots Jess on her date and since Caroline’s the biggest gossip around and Josh used to date Caroline’s older sister Anita, word gets out fairly quickly.
Jess’s web of lies grows thicker as she has to come up with an elaborate cover story of why she’ll be out of the house over the weekend so she can date Josh again. We learn this valuable lesson from Lila: “That’s the thing about lying, Jess. It’s best to keep it simple. You seem to be making things incredibly complicated.” Words to live by. Liz later forces Jess into confessing another lie – this time that Josh told her he was only fourteen and that she’d been duped by him.
The same night as Jess’s second date, her father offers the family tickets to the circus. Jess is torn, because she didn’t actually have that much fun trying to be older for Josh and barely succeeding and she loves the circus.
So, (and God, this is so awesome) Jessica ends up going to the circus on her double-date, where her parents and sister will be, as will Anita, and her brother Steven is the other guy in the double. Amazing.
Jessica responds to this crisis by crying and hiding in the ladies’ room. But (and this is a truly great moment in Jessica Wakefield, although she’s doing it for self-serving reasons), Anita Pearce also walks in, and she’s crying too, and so Jessica tells her that Josh still has feelings for her (which he does, he confessed that to Jessica earlier), and she pretty much helps them get back together.
Jessica eventually gets spotted by her parents but since Steven is covering for her, she doesn’t have to deal with them until she gets home. She does have to come clean to Josh, who really is a great guy as demonstrated by the fact that he immediately tries to make her feel better by telling her a story about when he pretended to be older.
Jessica ends up getting grounded for two weeks (lame!) and here’s the version of the story that people hear at school: “The rumor was that Jessica had fallen madly in love with a handsome, popular junior; that they’d dated secretly for weeks before getting caught; and that Jessica had nobly given Josh up so he could go back to his old girlfriend.” Wow.
