| #59: In Love Again |
[May. 16th, 2008|07:33 am] |
Hi, first-time recapper here! It’s like the first day at school, I’m all nervous. Since my mother threw out my old SVH collection, I’m going to make do with whatever I can find in the charity shops. So far I’ve found... well, this one. Bear with me, it’s stupidly long. I don’t have the art of concise recapping down yet.
The cover is less frightening than normal, although the artist has made quite a shocking error. I couldn’t find a picture, but Todd has been given BLUE eyes. No, no, artist! Todd has coffee-brown eyes. Elizabeth and Jessica have ocean eyes, Todd has caffeine eyes. Come on now, this is basic stuff.

| I have found something that may be of interest....... |
[May. 15th, 2008|09:08 am] |
I've been looking through my old school work and letters from friends when I was a youthful teenager, and I've come across some fan fiction we wrote back in the day about Sweet Valley! It's about the shameful secrets the characters may have that we don't know about. Does anybody have any objections to me posting it? I don't have any accounts at any FF sites otherwise I'd post there. MODs, feel free to delete this if it's not appropriate or in the wrong place and muchos apologies if so!
On a different note, I've just read SVT Patty's Last Dance (which is my next recap by the way). I didn't even know she was in SVT! When did she appear? |

| I Wonder.... |
[May. 15th, 2008|05:11 pm] |
How has Sweet Valley influenced your life?
I'm not talking body image issues, other little things.
I once decorated my Christmas Tree in Blue and Silver.
Since then it's been, Red and Gold, Purple and Silver, Gold and Silver, last year was Black and White, this year will be White and Gold and next year White and Pink.
I can never hear the word TOFU with out mentally adding GLOW.
What about you? |

Does anyone here watch Gossip Girl? I saw the latest episode, 1.17, yesterday and couldn't help but notice a huge resemblance to SVH.
( cut for Gossip Girl spoilers )
Generally speaking, can you think of any other instances where modern tv shows/books/movies etc have borrowed from the Sweet Valley High series? (probably unintentionally, no one wants to admit to being inspired by SVH.) |

| SVH #93 - Stepsisters |
[May. 14th, 2008|03:31 pm] |

In my last recap (SVH #81 – Rosa’s Lie), I claimed that Rosa Jameson was not in any other SVH book because, you know, she’s a minority. Turns out, I was WRONG! SVH #93, Stepsisters, is not only fabulous enough to show another minority’s struggle to fit into the bleach-white world of Sweet Valley, but the girl in question actually takes advice from Rosa! Oh, Sweet Valley High and racial issues… once again, the topic is handled in a sensitive and non-offensive manner. Seeing how no one had recapped this book yet, I thought I’d recap another book that tackles the same issue (racism!) in almost an even worse manner. |

Hello everyone! Longtime lurker here who just wanted to say hello, and I'm just curious: Whatever became of the winners of the tote bag? Were they announced? I was curious as to who had the winning entries! |

| SVH Super Thriller FEAR: A Killer on Board |
[May. 12th, 2008|05:10 pm] |
Hey, remember when Ned was a terrible(r than usual father) and the SVPD was inept(er than usual) in the last book? And then John Marin got locked up and everyone was like, "Ha ha ha, he's gone forever and we're going to be a-okay?" Yeah, they're totally not. This book is resplendent with a blatant disregard for protocol by virtually every tertiary character. Seriously, they make the camp counselors in Montana look capable.
Covah!

Look at those waves! They're so treacherous! And that is the biggest window I've ever seen on a boat. Through it we can see a horrified Liz and Jess. Also, do those little (big?) windows REALLY open? Especially out? This is all a little suspect to me. Are there any sailors out there who can verify this? When you open the cover, the scene is actually one from the book! Jess and Liz are wearing the outfits described, the water glass is knocked over, and Marin's even wearing a flannel shirt while brandishing his knife. Marin's got that floppy Dawson circa season 1 hair going on.

| Sweet Valley COmic |
[May. 12th, 2008|12:37 pm] |
I had a brilliant idea. i want to make a sweet valley comic (kinf of like the re-release of the Babysitters club book#1 in graphic novel format).
If only i could draw. But the twins could be the superheros and they could have all these powers. Like, elizabeths Laviere of Truth to tell her when Jess is in trouble, and thier Pacific Ocean blue-green eyes with the power to like hypnotize people and make them do stuff. And of course, Bruce has the 1Bruce1 car that is like a supercar with superspeed, and Tood with his almighty Toddpunch!!! kind of like the POW! in the bubble bursty-thing.
i tried drawing some sketches yesterday, but jessica lookes decidedly cross eyed and i just really suck at drawing. Any other ideas for superpowers??? who is a good drawer and can draw some pics? i'm good at copying other peoples drawings....so if i just had something to rip off....
Ah, the twins. helping the world one mousy-brown haired fatso at a time... |

| Temporary Handicaps |
[May. 12th, 2008|09:29 am] |
I was thinking about this last night as I was falling asleep (I know, I need a life): Can you guys think of a time when a character in Sweet Valley was handicapped and stayed that way?
For example, we have poor heroically deaf Regina who goes to magic Switzerland and gets her hearing restored. Or Mike McAllery who is paralyzed and then magically not. Same with Enid when she's in the plane crash. And Ken Matthews is blind for one book and then he gets his sight back at the end.
What gives? Does Sweet Valley have healing properties? Should I go to the nearest hospital and round up the deaf/blind/paralyzed people to cure them? |

| SVH #81 - Rosa's Lie |
[May. 11th, 2008|05:46 pm] |

First off, the cover for this is just amazing. Rosa’s left boob is at least three cups larger than her right. Not to mention the high-waisted jeans the twins are wearing and the purple wannabe trenchcoat that Jessica is rocking. And she DOES rock it! At any rate, it’s the perfect way to show the difference between two American girls and one “chicana” (as Rosa continually calls herself). And, as the book tells us, real chicana women have curves. The book is not at all un-PC, as you can tell…..
The A plot featuring Rosa and her family (who are, oddly enough, never mentioned again that I’m aware of) is amazing – that is, amazingly lame. The real genius is the B plot: Bruce vs. Todd is a battle of wills for their Phi Epsilon fraternity!! |

Okay. So I was cleaning out my bedroom because the fact is that I am now back at home after graduating college (\o/) and if I am going to live in my bedroom, I need room for my stuff. And I have a lot of books. So I've decided to get rid of my Baby-sitters Club/Little Sister/Sweet Valley/Goosebumps books, and I was chuckling at all the crazy stuff I found on the shelf. But then I found the Best Thing Ever.
Okay, does anyone remember the dolls made? (Seen here, if you do not.) Well, I definitely had both. And you see those little books in the boxes with them?
Yes. I still have mine.
Aptly titled "Jessica's Story" and "Elizabeth's Story," the two are short stories featuring wacky situations the twins get themselves into. They're roughly twelve pages each, and I have decided to cap them for your snarking pleasure. Because why clean your room when you can snark on the internet.
( Jessica's Story (just because it appears to go first of the two) )
( Elizabeth's Story )
With all that said, what did happen do you think? :P |

| Favorite, best, essential books? |
[May. 8th, 2008|09:28 am] |
I hope this kind of post is allowed...if not, let me know and apologies :)
So, I have just rediscovered the series and this community after the news of the reissues. I've successfully found SVH books 1-10 and all my books that were in storage. I'm also planning to order the Night to Remember - Evil Twin arc.
I'm looking for anyone's recommendations for insanely awesome SVH books. Do you guys have favorites that I should definitely consider tracking down? I didn't read every book as a kid, and I was a snob about ugly covers so I'm sure there are a lot I never read. (For instance, I never read #29 Bitter Rivals where Amy comes back and is evil, but it sounds awesome so it's on my list to order.
Help me, fellow Sweet Valley lovers/haters! Let the recommendations flow! |

| Sweet Valley High #2: Secrets (recap three) |
[May. 6th, 2008|06:24 pm] |
I don't mean to flood 1Bruce1, but I'm bored, and Secrets is just so snarkable!
Here's the cover. http://madteaparty.dreamhosters.com/closet/bookcovers/svh/svh002.jpg . Liz looks like she sees a roach in her sister's hair. and Jessica is all "more juicy details while I talk on my Barbie phone!"
Snark ahead. Plus...how I became the Sweet Valley Girl at college.

| Sweet Valley Twins #16: Second Best |
[May. 6th, 2008|12:49 pm] |
It's been likes, aaaggggeeeesss since I posted a review, but I'm back (I heard that groan of despair from the back row, ahem, shush back there)! I've been v v busy with RL crap, unfortunately (and exposing my soul for the chance of a tote bag; that made me hide in my bedroom for at least an hour, lol). I've picked a SVT book from random from my bookcase that I know hasn't been recapped, so, without further ado:
SECOND BEST!
Yes, this book is very Elizabeth featured. And, speaking of the gorgeous, graceful bodied twin herself, here she is on the cover:

| SVH Super Thriller FEAR: A Stranger in the House |
[May. 5th, 2008|01:44 pm] |
A Stranger in the House: Or "What My Family Doesn't Know Won't Hurt Them....Even Though it Might Kill Them."

Cover! This was a super special double cover. The top part has the prison bars, and the inside shows John being all super evil with photos of the Wakefield twins in his cell. Okay. There's a photo of Jess cheering from the cover of Jessica Quits the Squad (how embarrassing that the newspaper captured her effing up!), Liz & Jess in bikinis under a waterfall. FAIL. They just recolored Lila's hair from here. There are also two drawings at the top of Jess and Liz walking with John. Magically, John has traveled into the future, photographed these moments, and hung them up on his cell.

| SVH #25 Nowhere to Run |
[May. 3rd, 2008|11:56 am] |
SVH #25 Nowhere to Run Emily Mayer is the troubled girl with brown hair and long face in the pink shirt. Elizabeth “St. Liz” is playing her familiar role of meddling caring friend (for the 137th time I might add). I love covers where Liz’s barrettes match her shirt!
Usually it's LIZ who gives in to everyone's wishes, always playing the martyr in Sweet Valley while bravely holding back her tears. Well, step aside Liz! You've just been upstaged by Emily Mayer, the world's biggest doormat! |

| 1bruce1 birthday challenge! |
[May. 2nd, 2008|05:25 pm] |
In honor of our illustrious birthday, I would like to issue a challenge to ye worthy 1bruce1 readers, Club X style.
I kinda know this girl. She's about 5'6", with wavy blonde hair, eyes the color of the Pacific Ocean, and a perfect figure. She's into photography, and I've tried to talk her into posing as the Wakefield twins, but she never read the books and so isn't interested. However, here we have a whole community of people who may be able to grant my desire to see the classic SVH covers re-enacted!
Thus, I challenge you to:
1. Post a photo of yourself as a SVH character. Bonus points for faithfully horrible 80s fashion.
2. Post a photo of yourself (and any friends) re-creating one of the original-run SVH covers.
3. Any combination of the two!
...I do not have a prize. The prize is, um, our mutual amusement and moral satisfaction?
Or if people really need a prize, I guess I have an 80s-era denim stonewashed skirt with a butt-bow that I can send the person with the most awesome pic.
But you'll have to be a size 6 to fit it.
Edit: I'm just as excited to see recreations of covers NOT featuring the twins. I'm as committed to diversity as...Elizabeth is? Also, recreations/illustrations of actual scenes from the books are afully a-go! |
