THE SPEAKEASY debuts tomorrow night in Seattle

Calling all vamps, tramps, flappers, hepcats, swingkids, steampunks, vintage enthusiasts, historical aesthetes, and time travelers in the Seattle metro area:

Tomorrow night will see the debut of a new night recreating the age of flappers and philosophers, decadence and elegance, freedom and rebellion, vision and vice, with the wettest drinks from the age of the Dry Law, and the hottest tunes to loosen up the inhibition during the age of Prohibition.

I, in a new alias DJ Dubonnet, will spin the hottest plates from the coolest gators to have ever waxed a disc, with jazz, blues, rags, barrelhouse, hokum, jugbands, dancebands, and much more from the 1920-30's.

And my dear friend William will be slinging the drinks from the Prohibition-era to keep you loose and limber all night long.

Drape yourself in the sharpest threads and come on down and party like it's 1929!

hello my name is addie i just joined hello :)

i have a couple questions about where to buy pretty 20s things

first, i'm looking for a sort-of specific grey felt fedora. one that's light grey, with a wide black ribbon, preferably a stetson but it doesn't have to be, and with a brim more than two inches wide. i've looked /everywhere/ for one (well, ebay, thrift stores, antique stores and google) but no luck. everything is either like, fur felt which i don't understand but is expensive and sounds horrible, or like the ribbon is too thin or the color is too dark or the brim is too short, picky things like that. if you guys know of any like secret stores that might be around here (i live in ventura, in southern california), or secret vintage shops online i didn't see yet but have exactly what i'm looking for, i'd just adore it. (in case you want to know, i'm making a porkpie, like a buster keaton porkpie. in his wife's book, buster keaton remembered, she wrote a thing about how to do it and there's even a couple instructional pictures of old man buster making one, it's just darling!)

second, i've looked alot of places for a pair of flappery low kitten-heel t-strap shoes, also (of course) to no avail. i've tried zappos.com and ebay, but nothing. do you guys know of any nice online shops that might have those? (i am size 9 1/2)

thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. if any of you just generally know of some really nice 20s clothing shops online i'd love to see them, there's a million things i want but i figured my first paragraph was long enough and i didn't want to be all clogging up your community or nothin' with my requests and things. you should tell me about them!!!! yeah!!!!!

Help! In What movie Appear White Mouses and a Piano?

I have a question about a movie I have no idea:

I have a friend who need to know the tittle of a movie he watched it has a lot of time, when he was a kid. The only reference he can give me is that in the movie appeared two guys who - he doesn't remember by which reason -, filled a house with lot of mouses. It seems that all the animals went up and down by all the house and even inside a piano (the piano scene is what he remembers the best). He saysalso he is nearly sure the guys weren't Laurel & Hardy. He is not sure even if it is a silent movie or an early talkie. He don't knows if it is a short of a long movie either. I know I don't give you very much information really. Not that bad as a challenge, eh?

I had several thoughts: There are mice in a Charley Bowers movie and I remember something with mouses in a Max Linder short but I have to admit I have a mess in my memory now.

Thank you very much for any information you can give me.

When the Man

I am excited to announce that When the Man is playing in front of an audiance. For those who are new here or don't remember, When the Man is my short film series. It is a stylized 1220's, silent, horror series in which Death has gone rogue and he is trying to steal as many of the Devil's souls as he can before the sun comes up.

If you are in the Portland, Oregon area and you want to see my films along with a fantastically morbid play, filled with sex and violence in the form of Grand Guignol Theatre, then come to the Crimson Room at the Village Ballroom. If you would like to meet me in person, Miss Blythe (star of Episode 3) and I will be attending Oct. 26th's show. I may or may not come in character. If not, look for the red head:)

When the Man on youtube
Episode 1
Episode 3
Episode 5
The theater versions are slightly different, credits and framed with curtains along an enhanced version of Episode 5.

For tickets
The Tragedies

Hi all. I've just joined this community and I love the 1920s aesthetic.
I'm hoping you can help me out :)

I'm a bellydancer and I'd like to do a 1920-esque dance.
Do have any suggestions for music that would be appropriate? Preferably something sexy :)
I'll dressing in a strange gangster style dance costume (pinstripe, hat etc)
It doesn't have to be authentic period music.

I'd really appreciate some help :)
Thank you.

X-posted. Sorry if I've spammed your flist.

Research question: attire of young police detective in the 1920s

I am currently writing a crime novel, set in New York in the 1940s, though one of my heroes has a flashback to the 1920s when he was new to the detective bureau. He's an American of German descent, honest though likes to be presentable, and at the time was only in his twenties but well and truly on the up and up. My question is what cut and especially colour suit would a brilliant young police detective who's dressed for success wear? (Note: he's one of the honest ones). Also, what style hat?

A heart broken man reads his wife's suicide note and leaps to his doom as Mount Rainier erupts, spewing ash down upon a hapless city, turning his tears to mud.

Tänze des Lasters, early century cabaret/dance night in NYC

Tänze des Lasters (Dances of Vice) is a new monthly dance/cabaret night held in the spirit of the early century days of forgotten elegance, decadence, vice and creativity. Named after the expressionist Rosa von Praunheim film "Anita: Tänze des Lasters" about Anita Berber, the legendary nude dancer of Weimar Berlin, Dances of Vice carries the theme of rebellion, creative expression, and the triumph of madness and pleasure over societal restraints. There is certainly a darker, macabre element associated with the figure and period, which can be expected of the evening. Although the evening will have a more 1920s and 30s flair, I also hope to attract enthusiasts of the darker side of the Victorian era to the event.

Dances of Vice invites all modern day flappers, dandies, neo-Victorians, crazies, crooks andne'er-do-wells to join us in dancing to the hottest tunes of the Roaring Twenties, Dirty Thirties and Flying Forties from 10pm to 4am every third Saturday of the month at the Pussycat Lounge in New York City! The debut night is taking place on Saturday, AUGUST 18th at the Pussycat Lounge. There will be special performances planned for each evening, which will commence at 11:00pm. Dances of Vice not only aims to promote appreciation for the music and culture of the past, but will also feature (both live and DJ'ed) music from contemporary musicians either influenced by music of the early century, or in the avant garde spirit of the period in general.
Requested Attire: 1920-40s style, Avant Garde, Victorian, Steampunk, Gothic, Glamourous, Decadent etc- an additional entry fee will be charged for attendees in casual attire. Extravagance is surely encouraged- it is impossible to overdress for Tänze des Lasters.

For details, please visit: http://www.myspace.com/dancesofvice

Hey all, this is my first post in this awesome community.. i stumbled across it a few days ago while searching for "1920s" in interests, and here i am!

I've recently become infatuated with the roaring 20s, especially since the musical that my theatre department is working on next year is The Boy Friend! (which takes place in 20s france, in case you don't know)

anyway, i've been image searching the 20s, and made a few icons out of it.

so.. here they are!

there are some 70s, renaissance art, and new york stuff thrown in too, hope you don't mind:

When the Man: Episode 3 "The Starlet's Razor"

Here is Episode 3. It is my favorite of the When the Man series. It is special to me for many reasons. It is the most somber of the series to date and the only episode that went straight from the storyboards to reality without a hitch. The biggest reason this episode is so special to me though is because I met one of the most talented actresses I have ever known and one of the most amazing people I will ever know. Blythe and I instantly became best friends and later, lovers. We have been inseparable ever since.

Episode 3 is part of a 2-parter. In the portion you are about to see a young starlet commits suicide and Death writes her suicide note for her, using her own blood as ink. The other portion of this episode, which, due to the complexity of the scene, will be released much later. The Guild of Funerary Violinists were kind enough to give me permission to use their music for this episode. If you have not heard them yet, give them a listen. Their music is as beautiful as it is creepy. I love it!

Camera Ops: Cannabelle & Chad Ruin
Music: Guild of Funerary Violinists
Actress: Blythe Oliver
Actor/effects: Chad Ruin

<lj-embed id="6" />

NOT WORK SAFE!

When the Man: Episode 5 "The Pillow"

Here is Episode 5.

This episode is meant to feel and look very different from the rest of the episodes. When silent films were first released, they were released entirely silent. The music was scored live by the house orchestra of whatever venue the film was playing at. I purposely wrote the music for this to feel like someone elses interpretation of the mood of the scene. Likewise, projection gear varied from house to house. The color and damage is slightly different to convey this variation. I hope all of this comes across and I am not being too artsy for my own good:)

Camera Op: Cannibelle/Chad Ruin
Killer: Joe Rosati
Victim: Sinn Mohr
Death: Chad Ruin

All music and effects were created by yours truely, Mr. Ruin

Enjoy!

<lj-embed id="2" />
