Title: The Feeling of Belonging

Summary: It has taken time, but Morty finally knows what it feels like to belong.

It has taken time, but Morty finally knows what it feels like to belong. It is knowing that someone, not the whole world, loves you for what you are, and it is a jubuliant feeling. They sit together on the steps of the Ecruteak City shrine; watching the stars and talking of legends is their favorite hobby at night.

Morty's hands have an olive skin tone and they are never far from Eusine's gloved hands. Even though he's the gym leader of Ecruteak City, he is too shy to even hold Eusine's hand. They would be talking right now, but Morty is too caught up in his own feelings to think of little else. Eusine still stares at the sky, oblivious to Morty's internal battle.

Next to him, Morty ponders their friendship thus far and what could happen...if only he had the courage to make the first move. Perhaps tomorrow, just before Eusine leaves to find Suicune again...

He drops his gaze from Eusine and blushes, twisting his hands in his lap. Tomorrow he will tell Eusine his feelings.

Little does he know that Eusine doesn't feel the same...

Another man would be jubilant.

It’s a victory, according to many, according to *any*, according to a part of me that’s transcended the barrier between well-meaning traitorous sympathizer and cold, iron-minded orchestrator... it’s a victory, if a half-completed one. But I’m not celebrating.

It’s a triumph, some would call it; it’s a testament, it’s proof of success, it *is* success... but I’m not enjoying it.

It’s cause for celebration. They’ll whisper it in my ear, breathe it in transport beside me, murmur it in stairwells and mouthe it in corridors and crowded in elevators, it’s cause for celebration. But I’m not joining the party.

Because it’s her. And it’s him, and it’s this one and that one and all those so much greater than I am serving under me that I may have, or am now, or will be ordering to their deaths--how can they? How can I? They’re not celebrating tonight. Are my allies alright? They’re dying in mustered triumph. Is *she* alright? Their blood is on my hands. I’m running red. I’m running green.

So how can I celebrate?

The chancellor is dead.

Another man would be jubilant... but I’m not.

Because of him, and those behind him, and for all those behind me and especially for her... I’m terrified. There’s no room for jubilation. I’m crying.

XD Lee popped into my head when I saw that this week's word was jubilant, and the rest followed. o_o; This story involves unrequited love, Lee being on the unrequited side, as in canon. ;_; I was thinking of movies like Ever After as I composed this. x)

There's a rush of hot air, like standing in front of the air conditioner on the wrong side, the outside, the way he and his brother had done as kids. Their curiosity had always been the only thing to rival their penchant for getting into trouble.

The combination of the memory and the present circumstances brings a sudden hiccup and grin, and then a few tears that make lines down his face. They quickly evaporate.

He grips his brother's arm almost savagely, animal-like, his eyes darting from one end of the tunnel to the other, checking the illuminated iron stairs every 100 feet for signs of movement. Nothing. Just the rush of heat in their faces and their whole lives ahead of them.

They jump.

Michael is running. He has no breath, but he's running. His tennis shoes pound hard on the pavement. He has no time to reflect, as he would have under normal circumstances with an appreciative raised eyebrow and a smirk, on the ingenuity of the prison tennis shoe. The soles of his feet sting with every step. His mind has hemmorhaged. He suddenly realizes two things.

He does not know where he is going. And he does not know where his brother is.

He dare not look behind him to assure himself of the latter, so instead he focuses his entire attention on what lies before him. Grass. Grass everywhere. There are no gates, no bars in sight. He remembers now why he is running, remembers Bellick's nearly-bald head rounding the corner of the prison wall, boots pounding the pavement like his now pound the dirt, gaining, gaining.... Faster, faster...

His ears, as a deaf man cured by a miracle, suddenly open.

"MICHAEL!" It is too loud. He swerves around, allowing his stride to slow down in the process.

Who is that?

Eyes focus.

Lincoln.

It's Lincoln.

Oh!

Memories flood his head, and he brings both hands up to catch it as it falls toward the ground in exhaustion. In relief.

Jubilation.

Lincoln catches up to him, chest heaving, massive arms encircling his brother in the most loving embrace he has ever received.

They are free.
