Word #40
Please post a link here to your ficlet, but ficlets in comments are fine as well. If you do write the ficlet on your own page, please put the word behind an lj-cut tag (or hidden in some way), so as not to spoil anyone for the word.

Word for today is: Examination.

Sorry for the day's delay in the word. I spent the weekend offline and forgot. The picture will be posted later today.

My first try. Jeez, this is all I can do in 15 minutes? Untitled, Fruits Basket, no beta.

--------------------

Ayame winced at the feel of Hatori’s fingertips running along his spine. It was cold and he was naked like a baby and he was laying face down on Hatori’s futon, holding a pillow to his chest. His skin tingled from the coldness and Hatori’s touch and symptoms of the beginning of transformation.

“Stay still,” said Hatori, with a hint of command, his voice deep and cold.

“Uhm,” Ayame nodded, squeezing the pillow underneath him tighter. He was itched to wiggle his hips.

“If you wiggle your hips, I’ll spank you,”again, Hatori said, with a threatening tone now.

Ayame moaned. “You’re always so cruel!”

“You’re always so out of control,” Hatori replied quietly. “How does it feel?”

Ayame was silent. “Okay,” he said.

Hatori suddenly pressed his palm hard on the small of Ayame’s back. This time he drew a loud cry from Ayame’s mouth.

“Ouch! Bastard! It’s only a couple of bruises, okay! No need to do a thorough examination like that!”

“Bruises?! You almost broke your entire spine! How many times I’ve told you not to start a fight with Yuki?! If you’d rather have someone else to examine you and go through hell explaining why your spine is like a snake, then go ahead!”

Title: Break
*************

"Who do you work for?"

The voice was unemotional, cutting, persistent. The interrogator, standing over her chair, was faceless in the harsh light of Examination Room Three. From behind a one-way glass, Chapelle watched the proceedings with folded arms and pursed lips. They were nearing her breaking point. This had to be it. She couldn't possibly stand any more.

In the dim light he watched as she drooled more than spat a mouthful of blood out, saliva and blood trailing down her chin and spiraling in ropy threads to her lap. She was naked and filthy, tied to the chair where she had been for days, an IV drip providing only as much nourishment as she required to stay alive.

He hardly recognized Nina Meyers, former CTU employee.

"Who do you work for?" the interrogator asked again. He grabbed her face in one hand and she looked up at him, blinking against the harsh lighting. Her chapped lips moved, soundless. She cleared her throat and tried again.

Chapelle stepped towards the glass, straining to hear the whispered words through the speaker system.

"I almost want to tell you. But not quite."

Nina smiled weakly, her eyes heavy from drugs and exhaustion. A smile. She looked over at the mirror, drilling into where Chapelle stood.

He kicked at the wall between them in frustration. Not quite. But he would make sure she broke.

He stormed out of the observation booth to the music of Nina's dry, rasping chuckle, and the repeated question:

"Who do you work for?"

Was just pointed to this community by a friend and was poking around, and wanted to try this word. Not much of a writer, but hopefully it isn't too bad.

Grond turned the knife over in his hand, it was old, doubtless from one of the lesser civilazations of the region, but he couldn't tell which one. Maybe it was really from one that still existed.

He pondered the whole trip underground, most of the things he'd seen were just like what he imagined from hearing tales of places like this lots of bare stone, and dust, and a constant, musty smell.

He continued his examination of the room, a table, some chairs, a depression, surrounded by blocks of stone, a firepit, perhaps? That didn't make much sense, large fires weren't such a good idea underground.

He looked back at the knife again, made of ivory and wood, with something like string wrapping where the handle covered the blade. It was decorated with small pictures he didn't quite know the meaning of. Maybe it held some magic, he probably wouldn't be able to tell, he was more the physical sort not likely to notice anything but the strongest magic, then again, maybe if it did he didn't want it.

His attention snapped back at the sound of yelling and footsteps out in the corridor, they'd found something alive, perhaps he'd better help them out. He really couldn't figure out why the other adventurers wanted to go down into the lower "dungeons" and fight monsters when there were so many more interesting things.
