In the continuing saga of the search for a new President, I received this email today:
"From: Jeff Goodman Sent: Monday, July 13, 2009 1:08 PM To: Faculty Subject: Meeting
There will be a first meeting of the search committee for the new ASMS Director, Weds, July 15, 10 am, in the Board Room. About 5-6 weeks ago I was asked to serve on the committee, and I of course agreed to do so.
If you have any suggestions, questions, input, advice, or anything of the kind, please email or phone, 441-2162. It will be kept strictly confidential, I promise. Best, JG "
So it seems things are moving along at the usual ASMS pace.

| Dr. Ellis stepping down |
[23 Jun 2009|04:09pm] |
*turns on light, knocks down cobwebs, trips over some dead alum that got locked in here the last time this thing was updated.* ^^^^<--Did not realize someone else had posted in here today :P
The following letter is from ASMS Board Chair Jane Leatherbury Newman: June 22, 2009 Dear ASMS Parents and Students, I am very sad to inform you that I have received a letter of resignation from Dr. Jane Ellis. Dr. Ellis has been an outstanding leader, an inspiration to all of us, and has taken ASMS to exceptional levels of achievement during her seven years as president. After spending 34 years in education, Dr. Ellis has expressed that she would like to spend more time with her family. She also plans to resume her long-time interest in painting. We certainly tried to talk her out of this, to no avail. She will truly be missed! At the beginning of June, I appointed a Search Committee to begin the process of looking for a replacement for Dr. Ellis. If needed, the Board of Directors will appoint an Interim President at our next meeting in August. We do not want to rush this process, as it is imperative that we hire the "right" person to lead our wonderful school. We know that we have the support of all of you and welcome your input as we move forward with plans for the Alabama School of Math and Science. Very sincerely, Jane Leatherbury Newman Chair, ASMS Board

| Retirement of Dr. Ellis |
[23 Jun 2009|11:37am] |
Dr. Ellis has retired. The board has appointed a search committee to find a new president, and will consider appointing an interim president at their next meeting.
This place is kinda dead, but I imagine a few of you that still use LJ might be interested in that bit of news.

| Has anyone used.... |
[24 Sep 2008|01:27pm] |
Has anyone used TI's line of MSP430 uC's?
I've got a project I would like to use their smaller chips on and I bought their little usb stick developer, but I am finding that there is a file size limitation to the included software that severely restricts my coding (as in, the standard C libraries exceeds the file size).
Does anyone know of another programming solution for these that doesn't include dropping $xxxx on TI's full service programming package?

So, I was out shopping today at Pier 1 Imports when a girl who works there, noticing my ASMS class ring, exclaims, 'Oh my gosh! My mom dated Walt Williamson for, like, 6 years!".

| Retreat is still cancelled. |
[06 Jul 2008|09:45am] |
A couple of people have mentioned getting together at this year's retreat.
Currently, there are no plans (organized by the board or otherwise) for anymore retreats.
If this is important to you, drop your class representative a note and express to them your regret that this event has gone away.
As the event was, the presence of alcohol posed high liability risks to the alumni, and the cost of insurance caused a wet event to be impractical.
At the July '07 meeting it was decided to host a dry event, but it was canceled due to a shortage of volunteers.
The next Alumni Council Meeting is being held at the end of this month. Representatives from every class will be gathering at ASMS to plan out the '08-'09 goals for the alumni association. If you'd like to see another retreat, right now is the best time to voice your desires to your class rep.
Have no idea who that is? Check here: Class Representatives

| Stress Fest Trebuchet '05 |
[06 Jul 2008|12:38am] |
AS an update to my last post, Omegix was nice enough to send me the pics AND VIDEO he had of stress fest.
For your viewing pleasure I bring you the armory of ASMS '05.
Launch 1
Launch 2
I think we were able to get about 5 launches off before the axle had bent so much that we didn't feel safe firing it any more. It kinda surprised me that we bent it that quickly since the axle was built at Tommy's recommendation, but oh well. It was lots of fun while it lasted.
I've got the images Jeff sent me here:
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v280/sgcool195/Stress%20Fest%20Senior%20Year/
Watching these video's makes me want to build another one. Maybe we should make it an 'official' event at the next retreat........ Whoever catches the projectile wins a prize :)

| Looking for pictures from way back when.... |
[30 Jun 2008|08:12pm] |
Back during my senior year me and a few buddies spent 2 weeks worth of afternoons building a trebuchet on West Campus. We had lots of fun during stress fest launching whatever we could get our hands on.
Unfortunately, although we took it apart and stored it at West Campus for future years to enjoy, no future class tried to rebuild it and it got tossed out shortly after the fire.
I know that some pictures were taken of it at some point, but I don't have any of them in my possession. Does anyone here have any of them by chance or know anyone who might? I know there was an alumnus that showed up at one point and snapped a few, but I don't remember who it was.
So, if you happen to have some of those pictures or know someone who does, I'd greatly appreciate if you'd let me know.

| #asms on IRC |
[09 Apr 2008|09:30am] |
If anyone is interested, there is an #asms channel open on chat.freenode.net (default port, 6667). No password for this server, the channel is for current students and grads alike (just like 12plus1)
If you're new to Internet Relay Chat (IRC), there are some good free clients out there.
My personal favorite is IceChat. mIRC is very popular, but I think it's trialware.
If IRC is blocked on the network you're on, try a web irc like https://www.mibbit.com (make sure to use https:// vs. http:// when navigating to this site)
(Whoever runs 12plus1, drop me a line and I can setup ops for you.) (command to join channel is "/join #asms" in case anyone forgot.)

| For those comming to Auburn next year |
[28 Mar 2008|09:52pm] |
The 3rd bedroom in my apartment is available if anyone is interested. I have a few interested parties who would like to sublease it for one term or another, but since the lease is already signed in my name I would prefer someone who wants it for the entire school year to take the lease for that bedroom so I don't bear the responsibility of both.
If anyone is interested let me know and I will get you more details.

| ASMS Campus Picture |
[05 Mar 2008|02:50pm] |

This was lifted off of http://local.live.com A better view of the picture is available there (search for 1255 Dauphin St. Mobile, AL)
PS: The Tuscaloosa Alumni Reception is cancelled, only two RSVPs. Probably would have gotten better publication if there was a Tuscaloosa Chapterhead like what Huntsville, Auburn, and Birmingham have. If any alumni are interested in being it, let me know :)

You were right, I would come back with a question.
Seeing as Interview Day is March 29th, how will ASMS contact you if they would like an interview with you? Unless they contacted everyone they wanted to in late February. :/
