Claire awoke in a cell. Plain and simple. Three white, padded walls. One barred door with a slot. One wall made of complete fiberglass. Bulletproof, chickenwired fiberglass. Wireless, sensored monitors were taped into her arms, the intravenous needles hidden under white plastic and tape.

Normally, this would sting. Her body would be trying to heal around the tiny shards of metal, but having your biology inhibited was something that changed everything. She ran her fingers over the small, flashing LEDs that corresponded with screens on the computer across the hall. Two in her hand. One in her forearm. She imagined two out of the three were for heart and brain monitoring.. the other one, she couldn't begin to understand.

The sound of his fists hitting the heavy bag was muted in time with the rushing in his ears.

The training room was all but empty, most having gone home a long time ago. There was maintaining physical condition and then there was trying the limits of exhaustion, something no one wanted to do when they could be called on assignment at any moment. For Jamie, it was neither. It was an test of self-control. How hard could he hit, get hit, how many times before it proved too much? Before his concentration broke and he replicated?

Stepping back, he drug his sleeve over his forehead, panting heavily. He heard the door click shut, eyes darting to the side, clenching his jaw when he registered who it was.

Jessica exited the small New York cafe with a steaming cup of mocha latte in hand, eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a messy bun, high and loose. She really needed the coffee after the night she's had. Another sleepless night full of work keeping her up, she was worried she might be developing insomnia, if she didn't have it already. Dressed in a dark pant suit, she was free to stroll down the bustling streets of New York with complete anonymity, milling about as just another professional face in the crowd. Although, given her present position in the public eye, hers was normally a recognizable one. Not overly recognizable, but just enough that it sometimes gave her a headache, trying to make her way from place to place. Fortunately for her, the Big Apple was not Washington D.C.

She scanned the morning papers she held in her other hand as she took a sip of her beverage. Thus not looking where she was going as she rounded the next street corner, Jessica slammed into someone coming the other way. As expected, the coffee swirled over the rim of the styrofoam cup and spilled all down her front.

"SHIT!"

She couldn't help but hiss in surprise and slight pain as the hot liquid touched her bare skin.

At first, it had been for the sake of appearances.

Candice had told him not to let himself be lonely and truth be told, he couldn’t stand the look on her face that she never quite managed to hide. So he’d started making them. Would have them there for when she came over, to show that he wasn’t quite as broken as she thought. As he was. To keep her from worrying about him, because even that small gesture brought shame.

Until one evening after a particularly grueling mission, when he came home like every other night to a dark, silent apartment and he started to think he’d go insane from the quiet. He’d clapped his hands, the sound harsh and jolting in the stillness, and like that, he had another person to fill the space.

The sound of his footsteps crunching on the gravel echoed loudly in his ears, bag slung over his shoulder as he made his way down the familiar road. The ride he'd hitched had taken him only as far as town, but he didn't mind walking. Had done a lot of it over the years. He just hoped he'd make it to the farm by dark, otherwise find the place would be a pain in the ass.

Hard gray eyes scanned the landscape, hazy through the smoke rising from his cigarette. James sighed, flicking the ash from the end before taking another long drag. Place never changed. He remembered now why he'd hated it so much.

But home was home and fuck, when you were at the end of your rope, it always seemed like the best place to turn.

Unless, he thought, pausing at the end of the driveway,  some asshole thought he could waltz in and take it from you. James tossed his cigarette to the dirt in anger as he took in the lights in the window of the old farmhouse, pulling his gun from his belt and cocking it.

This was his home, dammit, and whoever they were would have hell to pay if they didn't clear out.

Latching the stall door, Jamie reached up at patted the aging pinto on the neck and leaning in to give him a kiss on the nose. Hefting the saddle on one arm, he carried Lando's tack back to its place in the tack room, sighing and wiping his sweaty forehead with his sleeve.

It was unrealistically hot for the end of September, he decided, leaving the stables and heading back up to the house, stripping of his jacket as he went. Grabbing a Coke from the refrigerator, he headed into the living room, frowning when he realized all of the lights in the house were shut off.

Leaning on the banister, he called up the stairs, "Kirin? You asleep?"

Tad pushed away from the computer finally, stretching absently and heading towards the kitchenette, pulling a microwavable meal from the freezer and tossing it in for ten. Grabbing a bottle of hard lemonade, because he was that much of a bad ass, he'd just settled down on the couch when the phone started to trill.

Groaning, he reached down into the couch cushions, digging up the phone and jabbing the talk button.
