I absolutely, positively hate feeling like this. My chest suddenly feels hollow and my heart beats too hard. My stomach turns somersaults. My thoughts swim around in my head.

What if the answer is no? What if I’m let down? Maybe it’s just me, but this feels like my whole world here. A “no” now and I’m done, finished. And waiting isn’t much better.

My palms are sweating now, and I briefly take note that I’m a wimp, but my next shaky breath brings me back to the moment.

Waiting to hear my fate from her lips is torture.

There is a hair on the wall. In the wall. Under the paint. I hide it with my finger, reveal it beneath my sliding fingernail. Forever a mangled J. Or is it a d?

My toes grip the curve of headboard. My hand covers my mouth. There is hair across my eyes.

Eventually I will sleep again and dream in episodes, my 90% surfacing long enough to topple what’s above water. I’d just as soon stay under.
