I've added all the categories people suggested, but if you decide to write for something you don't see there, let me know and I'll add it.

New Fic Challenge Aug. 10th, 2004 @ 10:16 am

Announcing Crime Takes a Holiday: The All-Holiday Crimefic Challenge

The challenge is open to all characters and pairings in all crime fandoms. The only rule is that fics must revolve around a holiday -- any holiday -- in any culture/country/nationality. So send Jack home with Sam to meet her mother over Thanksgiving. Send Jimmy to a fire started by a Fourth of July firecracker. Let Warrick take Catherine's daughter trick-or-treating. Anything goes, as long as there's a holiday involved.

Challenge guidelines are as follows:

  • The challenge is open to het, slash, and gen, any pairing (or no pairing at all).
  • Any and all characters from crime fandoms are fair game. Below is a list of eligible fandoms, but if you want to write in a crime fandom that's not listed, e-mail me at carolinecrane @ yahoo dot com and I'll add your fandom to the list.
  • Submissions can be in the form of fic, fan art, or songvids. If you need a place to host your fanart or vid, just e-mail me and let me know.
  • The challenge archive opens on October 31st. You can post your fic any time between then and December 31st.
  • Participation is easy -- no sign-ups required. If you decide to participate, just post your fic on the challenge archive any time after October 31st.

Questions? Ask here or e-mail me.

Just a general announcement (or two) Jun. 25th, 2004 @ 09:30 am
[info]carolinecrane
Hi again. I was thinking this morning (which is often a dangerous prospect) about challenges and whether or not to issue another one, and it occurred to me that I never mentioned anything about late entries to the 1000 Whispers challenge.

So. Just so you know, if you're uploading a fic late, you should feel free to pimp it here. I realize not that many people are going to go back and check the archive all that often, so this is a good place to let people know that you're late to the party.

And I'm still thinking about whether or not to issue a new challenge this summer. If I do it'll be next month and it'll be open to all crime fandoms, gen/slash/het. More on that later. Hope everybody's having a wonderful summer.

Gratitude. And a question. May. 28th, 2004 @ 10:29 pm
[info]alethialia
First off, I'd like to thank [info]carolinecrane for doing such an amazing job at organizing all of this. Thanks, dear. It's been great fun.

And then I had a question. Is there a policy about posting our stories other places? I don't mind if there is, I'm just curious.

Anyway, thanks again! I hope everyone enjoyed this as much as I did.

All fics and artwork submitted for the [info]1000whispers challenge are now posted. You can find them here:

A Thousand Whispers: The CSI T.S. Eliot Challenge

There's a review feature built into the archive, so please remember to feed your fellow authors/artists. It's the only payment they get.

Now that the deadline's passed, late submissions will post automatically without having to be validated by me first. Artwork still has to go through me, but if you've got fanart to be posted just e-mail me and I'll take care of it.

I want to thank everyone who participated in the challenge; it was my first try at running something like this, so thanks to all of you for bearing with me. In the future I might run another general crimefic challenge, and if so I'll make an announcement on this community. So watch this space.

Thanks again, it's been fun.

Just FYI, I'm apparently having some trouble with my nickandgreg.com e-mail address. Wonderful timing, I know. So if you've been trying to contact me regarding the challenge and haven't gotten an answer, try me at carolinecrane@yahoo.com

The deadline's fast approaching, so if you have any problems registering at the archive or uploading your fics let me know. For people who are submitting fanart, I'm setting up a section for that which will go live on the 28th, so if you're planning to submit fanart you can either send me the completed file and I'll host it, or send me a URL where people can find your work.
» Just a reminder
If you've posted a fic to the archive (or if you're planning to) and you've neglected to include your prompt somewhere in your story (say, at the beginning) it would be great if you'd take a minute to do that sometime. If you've already posted you can sign in and edit your posted fic. It's not a requirement, but it would be nice to see the inspiration for your completed project. Thanks.
» can i join in on the fun?
is it too late to join in? i am intrigued by the ts eliot aspect...
» Archive open
I know, I'm a day early. I have a lot going on tomorrow, though, so I'd rather be early than late. The archive is now available for uploading, although due to popular vote, all submissions will go live at midnight EST on May 28th. To post your completed fic go here:

Challenge Archive

If you have any problems with the archive interface or questions about your submission, leave a comment here or e-mail me. Thanks for playing, everyone! I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with.

Friday was a beautiful English spring day, torrential drizzle but beautiful and green with it.

Driving to work an image of my T.S.Eliot quote appeared and a story plan formed... now someone please tell me how I find time to write it
» Fanart
I've looked through the old posts and on the site and I can't see this question addressed anywhere, so I was wondering in regards to the fanart section of the challenge, do you consider wallpapers an acceptable submission piece, since I've always bunched them in with fanart, but I figure it's down to [info]carolinecrane.

only i can't seem to find my prompt anywhere. >< does anyone know if there is like. a master list somewhere?
» who all is out there?
hi everyone,

i'd like to see a list of everyone participating. i think it would be interesting to see just who jumped into this challenge, and maybe a list of what poem they received. anyway, hi, i'm jess. so far, so good.
» Beta All-Call
Looking for a beta? Willing to offer your betaing services? This is the place to sign up. Just leave a comment listing the pairings/genres you're willing to beta so people can connect with you. Or, if you're looking for a beta, comment with your pairing/genre so people know what you're after.

I'll keep a running list in this post as people sign up. So far this is what I've got:

Betas needed:

[info]cassiejamie needs a beta for her Speed/Delko Miami fic. NC17.
[info]missparker needs a beta for a Grissom/Catherine with a small side of Grissom/Sara fic.
[info]demon_faith needs a beta for an angsty Nick/Greg piece.

Betas offered:

[info]carolinecrane (that's me) is willing to beta Miami het, or on the CSI side, Nick/Greg, Cath/Sara, Cath/Warrick. I can also beta gen in both fandoms. I'll beta Gil het as well, but I'm never sure I've got much of a handle on Gil's voice, so if you can find someone more confident you're probably better off.
[info]anitchka will beta Grissom/Sara, Catherine/Warrick, or Catherine/Sara
[info]nekosmuse will beta Catherine/Warrick, Grissom/Sara, Catherine/Sara, or Nick/Greg. See warnings on her beta style in comments section.
[info]thepurpleswitch will beta Vegas gen, Cath/anybody, Gil/Nick, Warrick het, and Greg/anybody
[info]carleton97 will beta Nick/Greg, Cath/Sara, Cath het, Gil het, Warrick het, any Miami het, and gen in both fandoms, or ask to see if she'll take on a specific pairing that's not listed here.
[info]oh_mumble will beta...well, I'm just going to quote her: "I'm happy to beta any gen fic for Vegas or Miami, and any non-explicit slash pairing, provided you can make a case for it. Like, you need to really convince me if it's a Horatio/Speed fic, but try me! I'll also look over any non-explicit Cath/Warrick or Calleigh/Delko."
[info]kerlin will beta any Vegas gen, Griss/Sara, Nick/Sara, and Cath/Sara
[info]sophiap says: "I'm willing to beta Vegas fic at any point in the writing process, including being a sounding board to help you work through any thorny plot problems you may encounter during the outlining/drafting phase."
[info]alethialia will beta any and all Miami genfic and hetfic, except for Speed pairings.
[info]demon_faith will beta any Vegas with Nick/Greg or Gil/Cath, as long as it isn't above a PG-13 rating.

And...that's it for now. But if you're up for betaing or need a beta, this is the place to sign up. And if you haven't signed up for the challenge yet, you've got 23 days left to take the plunge. Come on, you know you want to.

ETA: I probably don't need to say this, but I am not one of those chicks who insists that all fics must be betaed and praise lavished upon betas in your author's notes in order for the fic to be accepted in the archive. If you've ever read any of my stuff you know that I very, very rarely use a beta myself, so this is a completely optional portion of the challenge. I just thought it would be nice to centralize resources for first-timers in the fandom who may need a little extra help. Also, thanks to everyone who's offered to beta. Y'all rock.

Prior to the challenge deadline, we can post the stories for feedback right? I don't want to send it off to my beta reader because she has been having internet problems for months now and I didn't want to chance not getting it back in time.

Thanks.

Can anybody recommend an in-depth episode guide for CSI? Summaries I've found, but some really detailed synopses would be a godsend.

Thanks!
» A quick question regarding the challenge
This is my first time running a challenge, so I've been organizing the whole thing with the helpful input of my friends list. But I figured this particular question should really be open to the people who are actually participating in the challenge. I've been going back and forth about this all weekend, because on the one hand, it's kind of fun to make everyone wait and reveal all the challenge entries at one time, but on the other hand, not everybody wants to wait.

So. What do you think?

10 (17.9%)

Make everyone wait until the deadline. It's more fun when they all go live at once.
30 (53.6%)

Either way is fine with me.
16 (28.6%)

Thanks for the input. And if you're reading this and don't have an LJ account but are participating in the challenge, you can leave a comment to this post (or e-mail me) letting me know your preference.
» Challenge sign-ups
I should have mentioned this yesterday but me and thinking clearly haven't been getting along so great the past few days.

If you want to sign up for the challenge and don't feel like sending an e-mail (I know some people see 'e-mail' and think 'oh, I'll do it later' because e-mail's a pain) you can sign up here. Just comment to this post and I'll get back to you with a prompt.
» Challenge Guidelines
Hi, I'm Caroline, and the CSI fandom-wide challenge was my brainchild, so I'll be taking responsibility for the fallout spearheading this little experiment. I'm excited about the idea of a fandom-wide challenge so I really hope a lot of people decide to participate. I've never done one of these before, but I'm really looking forward to it.

This community will serve as a sort of catch-all for questions about the challenge, beta searches, canonical questions, pretty much anything challenge-related that comes up. If you have a question, this is the best place to ask it, as I don't always get to my e-mail right away, and this way if another member of the community knows the answer, they can answer sometimes sooner than me.

The basic rules are as follows:
  • The challenge is open to het, slash, and gen, any pairing (or no pairing at all).
  • Any and all characters from CSI and CSI: Miami are fair game.
  • Submissions can be in the form of fic, fan art, or songvids. If you need a place to host your fanart or vid, just e-mail me and let me know.
  • The challenge is open until April 8th. Submissions are due by midnight EST on May 28th.
  • If you decide to participate, e-mail me at caroline @ nickandgreg.com requesting a challenge and I'll send you back a prompt from a T.S. Eliot poem. From there it's up to you -- you can include the actual lines of poetry in your challenge, use them as inspiration, choose an image they evoke and go from there...whatever. Just make sure you include the lines in their original form somewhere in your submission (at the end of a fic or in your story header, for example). With vids and art you'll be e-mailing me directly rather than using an upload form, so you can just include your challenge in the body of the e-mail.
  • The upload form will go live on April 8th. You can submit your challenge responses any time between then and the challenge deadline.

That about covers it, I think. If you've got any questions, just ask. Again, feel free to post questions to the community as a whole rather than just commenting and waiting for me to get back to you.
