Slusho Info
I KNOW this may have nothing to do with this... but the slusho t-shirt makes me suspicious (and this is really frickin' weird)... so here we go!

The History of Slusho:

The Slusho! story is of magic and triumph!

Noriko Yoshida dedicated her life to refreshment! Her classmates called her the Smallest Whale because she would drink endless amounts of beverages at every meal.

Truth was Noriko loved libations so much, and drank so much, she did not join while the other children opened their fun, she rather experimented with flavor mixtures - combing different fruits, vegetables and other ingredients naturally grown form her father's (Ryouta Yoshida) farm to make great new beverages.

Her deliciousness made her loved throughout many towns and villages on Honshu.

(next page)

And every year she would try to beat herself by coming up with a new flavor mixture, so unique to anything else - she was never satisfied!

But tragedy struck for the Smallest Whale! Noriko set off on a sea adventure to find the greatest, most tastiest ingredient to the world, and was never heard from again!

She left behind her only son, Ganu! Ganu also liked to experiment, but not with the beverage-making enterprise that killed his mother, but for science!

He abandoned his mother's drink business to his cousin, because the pain of her loss was so great with every flavor mixture Ganu attempted. Truth is that he became a lead ocean scientist. His accomplishments are many, he is very big.

(next page)

And one fateful day, he and his teammates discovered a deep sea ingredient unique to anything else!!! While the team pondered miraculous ways to use it, Ganu had the best idea of all!! Because that night he had a dream - he was a tiny fish, and a whale came and told him to drink the new ingredient. And as he did drink lots and lots of the ingredient, Ganu grew from a small fish into an enormous whale!!! He woke up with tears, he knew he had found the magic ingredient Noriko had set off to find!

He decided he would make his mother's dream live - make the tastiest drink, unlike anything on earth! Because the ingredient was discovered on the deep ocean floor, under amazing pressure and the most extreme cold, Ganu knew he had to serve the ingredient in a near-frozen state to preserve it's freshness!!

(next page)

He re-joined his cousin, and combining the incredible drink-making knowledge of Noriko's business with the new ingredient, SLUSHO! came to life!!!!!!

Everyone who drinks a SLUSHO! tastes Noriko's dream, and becomes a small whale like Noriko - because you want to drink huge amounts of SLUSHO!

BET YOU CAN'T DRINK JUST SIX!!!

some people are saying it's not a blue oven mitt, but instead one of those gloves you need to hold really really cold things. we already know slusho has to be cold, so this seems logical...

I don't know if something ate the original "ingredient" on the ocean floor or if something drank a few Slushos too many, but I'm getting the feeling that this may be hinting at what the monster is or how it got to be that way. Someone here also pointed out a (long) while ago that if the monster hits the Statue of Liberty first, it's very likely to be coming from the water.

Godzilla was actually a metaphor for the dangers of nuclear power.

Slushozilla is actually a metaphor for the dangers of...processed frozen drinks?

Has anyone translated the Japanese at the bottom? Is it just the slogan in Japanese? There's a "6."

My kanji is rusty but from what little i can read I'm guessing it's "you can't drink just six" roku nondakejaarinai or something.

Dang, been too long. My Japanese sucks.

The curious thing is that it looks to be a mistranslation into japanese.

6杯だけじゃ足りない LOOKS like it is supposed to say "You can't drink just 6 cups"... only it actually says something more along the lines of "You can't foot just six cups." I can't verify that translation, though, because I'm not really sure what's up with the use of 足... which is a noun that appears to be stuck in the middle of the verb conjugation. In fact, there isn't anything about drinking in the sentence that I can see.

I'm going to have a friend who knows more japanese look at it, but it might be a mistake. If it's not, then it's quite the easter egg... whatever it means.

Okay, actually, my dictionary completely did not mention that ashi can be read as ta, and tariru is "sufficient." The joy of consulting friends with better dictionaries.

The sentence says, as best as I can figure, "Just six cups aren't sufficient."

what I've found out about this so far

So the best I've been able to do is look up the names on a japanese name meaning sight and translate smallest whale into japanese. Smallest whale in japanese is saishou kujira (according to the translator I used.

NORIKO 法子, 典子 f Japanese
From Japanese 法 (nori) "law, rule" or 典 (nori) "code, ceremony" combined with 子 (ko) "child".

RYOUTA 涼太, 亮太, 良太 m Japanese
From Japanese 涼 (ryou) "cool, refreshing", 亮 (ryou) "clear" or 良 (ryou) "good" combined with 太 (ta) "thick, big".

I can't find anything on Ganu and have had no luck with the surname Yoshida.

I'm still placing my bet on Cthulu. The whole water-based monster [ and crap found at the bottom of the ocean; isn't that where he dwells or something? ] sounds a little too convenient to not be him at this point -- I think I'd be happy seeing Lovecraft's stuff come to life but at the same I don't think I'd mind an original monster either.

[ I just think Lovecraft would be all the more scarier, you know? ]

I honestly think it's nothing to do with Godzilla or Lovecraft. I like to think that it's a completely original idea from the minds of Goddard, Reeves, and Abrams.

Cthulu is my bet as well

After doing some research it would appear that Cthulu is the most logical conclusion as to the identity of the creature... The mythology of Cthulu states that he slumbers somewhere is the pacific, which would go along with the area that the "special ingredient" for the slusho drink was found. Also I found it curious while watching the trailer that... While the group of young people are in the subway.. they all look around like something is in there with them and you can actually here what sounds like "chattering" creatures... this clue would also correspond to the Cthulu mythos, as this "elder" is supposed to have brought "minions".. I believe are called cthuli... with him that would do his bidding when he awoke from his slumber... the really cool thing would be if this were true and they bring in Cthulu's rival (sorry can't remember his name) to do battle with him... Cthulu is the pinnacle of evil... and of course his rival is an "elder" who represents justice... then of course we would all get caught in the cross-fire...

As for Ganu, I have found no japanese name sites that list it although it is a common surname among Indians. I read a wikipedia article that said there was a connection between the hanso site and Lilo and stitch having to do with Joop being number 646 same as stitch, there is a Captain Gantu in that movie as well, looks like a sharkman.

I think I found the ingredient that makes Slusho so special. It's an algae called Caulerpa taxifolia. Dubbed “killer algae,”
My reasoning behind this is the look of this plant is the same as the one on the history page of the Slusho site. Curious.
