Kissing and touching;
blurry blind we find ourselves
tangled up somehow.

Sometimes I miss you
a lot more than I want to
admit.  I'm sorry.

I was cleaning my computer out a little bit, going through and putting old documents in the recycling bin and whatnot, when I found a project I'd done in the fifth grade about the various cycles in the world (star, butterfly, seasons, etc.)  Curious to see how I wrote when I was ten, I opened the document and started reading.  Apparently in addition to assigning a report, my fifth grade teacher also asked us to write a haiku to go with each cycle!
So here they are.  The haikus I wrote when I was ten.  I hope you like them.

[Stars:]
Start as nebulas,
Their being depends on mass,
They go on and on.

[Carbon:]
Life supporting life,
Circulating through the air
And through the water.

[Butterfly:]
Egg...Larva...Pupa,
And now it's a butterfly.
Aren't they beautiful?

[Seasons:]
Earth goes round and round,
The season's always changing;
The world is tilted.

[Rock:]
People think that they're
Rough, hard, and unfeeling but
I think they're just shy.

The rock cycle is by far my favorite.  I was even romanticizing inanimate objects in elementary school.

Dr. Allison
Is a docile old man with
giant bifocals.

Soft chord progression
O Magnum Mysterium
sing, sopranos, sing!

Regina Spektor
is my long time lady-crush.
I saw her last night.

Heavy in her womb,
New sin sinks Ophelia
down into the sea.

Forgetting myself,
Beckoning with the wrong arm,
You saw my bruises.

I was embarassed.
You watched me pull my sleeves down.
Neither of us spoke.

It was chilly out
Bodies smashed against bodies
Like in catacombs

You're silly sometimes!
You like to count my freckles
and connect the dots!

I wrote this Haiku in Chinese, even though Haiku's are a Japanese form of poetry. I tried following the 5-7-5 format. It reads from left to right, from the top to the bottom. It Says:

Zai deng-zhe ba yue
zai xuexi hanyu yi bian
wo di-er guxiang

Which Translates to:

Waiting for August
Studying Chinese Again
My second homeland.

What do you think?

here, between these love-worn sheets.
How I wish you'd stay.

Kissing, at the time
is the simplest, rightest choice

Kissing, afterwards
is the most complicated
thing you've ever done

Go, you heretics,
You estranged children of God,
Dance with the Devil.

Oh, it makes me sick.
Von Bismarck said, "No bullshit."
The realpolitik.

Could have been more wrong,
I guess. Thought you loved me once.
Should have known better.

You’re all gussied up
And you have nowhere to go.
Dab mascara tears.

Here is my secret:
I used to hang with Jesus
Before he was cool.

It’s chilly out here.
Pink cleavage shirt, brown slip-ons...
What a nice twilight.

AHH THESE ARE THE WORST HAIKUS I HAVE EVER WRITTEN. consider them not haikus but haiku-shaped statements.

okay
trying again

calmly

cool place beneath your
eyes like a cheek only not
no burn, just whiteness

sticky like syrup
i try to kiss your cheek and
pull away-i'm stuck

why are you like bees
the bees that infest your hair
honey covered boy

these seem to all be about sticky people- what the fuck, but i guess this is what i get for writing them on the spot... what is going on in my subconsious?

why are you like bees
who raised you, forest boylet
small man of the wood

why are you like bees
humming like a device for death
or like a carton

i'm not in love with these... and they start with the same line, but i felt like being creative. feedback?

how seriously do you think haikus should be taken? my answer is not very. i usually recognize them as shallow fun.
