After picking up the $300 tab last night, I’m certain one of the guys I ate with would be calling my room this evening to return the favor. But I won’t be there. The favor will have to be returned some other time.
A day and a half confined to meeting rooms at the Grand Geneva Resort while the weather is setting records has me itching to venture out. I don’t want my impression of Wisconsin to be restricted to the grounds of this very nice, but contrived, resort.
Just minutes after the ending of our last seminar of the day, I’m in my car exiting the resort grounds. I didn’t bother going online to look at maps before leaving. That would have increased the chances of my phone ringing. Plus I thought heading out with no plans was a good plan for the night. Just get in the car and go see Wisconsin.
I left so fast I was still wearing dress pants and loafers. In a land of jeans, boots, and John Deere hats, I was clearly a tourist. But that’s exactly what I wanted to be. And I was not disappointed. Spectacular scenery was everywhere on this perfect weather day. The influence of agriculture here in southern Wisconsin is overwhelming, even to a man who lives in the farm-rich Shenandoah Valley. I will be bringing strong impressions of Wisconsin back home with me.
On a lighter note…a forensic inspection of my loafers upon arriving back at the resort would reveal the following:
White paint flakes from the Lake Geneva city dock (standing on which gave me a touch of vertigo).
Cow manure from fields in Janesville and Darien where I was creeping to get close-ups of sprinkler systems.
Spray from Lake Delavan, where the wind was howling fiercely, though warmly, at sunset.
Mayfly carcasses - those little bastards were everywhere. Surely I stepped on several during my excursion.
Sauerkraut - my third helping on this trip and it kept falling out of my sandwich, bouncing off my pants and onto the floor.
Another half day of meeting rooms awaits me in the morning, and then I’m on my way home. I’ll still be one-up on last night’s companions. Another dinner with them today would have been nice – they’re all good guys – but the trade off of getting to see more of Wisconsin was definitely worth the tab.

Saving a Black Lab/Rottweiler from the Woodbury Humane Society. ASAP by July 26th, 2007
From a friend on MYSPACE:
Please tell all your friends, call your friends, and repost this bulletin. We don't have time before he is put to sleep.
He is under the name of Harley and he is going to be put to sleep if no one adopts him soon. They say he is not placeable for adoption.
Why? He bites when his food is taken away. My little Pekingnese bites when you go near his food. There are ways to work around this and place him in a suitable home instead of putting him to sleep. He is a very nice dog and needs lots of attention and room to run.
Please go to the Humane Society in Woodbury, MN and save him!!!!
651-788-4665 Ask for Jennifer
We can not keep him because, we already have two small dogs.
He is a very good dog and just so you all know. I am not for anyone who is into dog fighting/stage fighting. Last week, I posted bulletins for this dog to be adopted and I tried so hard to find him a good home.

Seeking Wisconsin Women Activists
I am beginning a project documenting the stories of current Wisconsin women who are active in their communities and working to create change. The women can range in age from high school through retirement. I hope to discover a cross-section of women involved in various types of activism including in their community’s schools, town and city governments, and on a range of issues including environmental, human rights, and economic justice. I plan to document the stories of women from a variety of Wisconsin locales—rural as well as urban.
If you know of someone who fits this profile, please email me their name, contact information, and a brief description of their activism.
I am a freelance writer based in Madison, Wisconsin. For more information about me, please visit my website: www.iwriteurstories.com. My email address is Jennifer@iwriteurstories.com.
Thank you for your assistance.

Kitty Needs a new home
I am a caretaker at a storage facility. It seem someone has dumped a poor little kitten here and left him.
He's adorable. It looks to be about 4 to 6 months old. My boss will not let me bring him inside. I'm feeding him, but he's cold and lonely and really, really would like someone to love. The local animal shelter is full and will not take him.
I don't have a digital cam, so I can take a photo of him -- but I promise he's cute. He's white with a black tail and a black spot on his head. He has yellow eyes.
If any one is looking for a very lovable kitty -- please come get him.
The facility is located in Roberts, WI about 45 mins east of Minneapolis, MN
Please contact me if you are interested.
